TO:All West Virginia School Nutrition Association (WVSNA) membersFROM:WVSNA Executive BoardSUBJECT:Faith Gravenmier ScholarshipsDATE:September 19, 2013The West Virginia School Nutrition Association announces the Faith Gravenmier scholarshipprogram for SNA members wishing to become Certified and/or Credentialed!SNA’s Certification Program is based on the standards of practice and indicators in the Keys toExcellence in School Food and Nutrition Programs that define nationally accepted standards forquality programs. The WVSNA encourages every member to become nationally Certifiedand/or Credentialed through the SNA professional development program. To help make itpossible, WVSNA will reimburse every member for the first year application fee associated withthe level of Certification/Credentialing, along with the exam fee for Credentialing.Certification: All levelsBeginning October 1, 2013, any WVSNA member pursuing SNA Certification can apply forreimbursement for the application fees ( 14- 27). After successfully achieving any new level ofCertification, WVSNA members can also receive reimbursement for the application feeassociated with that level ( 17- 27).Credentialing:WVSNA members wishing to become Credentialed will be reimbursed for the testing fees( 200) when they successfully pass the examination. In addition, newly Credentialed memberswill be eligible to receive reimbursement for their first year dues ( 58).

Why Should You Become Certified?Becoming SNA certified and/or SNS Credentialed adds credibility to your position and to yourschool's program. It is also a factor in attracting people to careers in school foodservice andnutrition. Increase your knowledge and skills of food safety and nutrition to create a healthyschool environment. Enhance your professional image with parents, children & school administrators. Stay current on issues concerning school nutrition initiatives. Demonstrate commitment to your profession. Provide a career ladder you can use to advance in the field from assistant, to cook, tomanager, to director.Who is Eligible to Become Certified?Requirements1. You must have a high school diploma or GED.2. You must take a 10 hour SNA approved Nutrition Education Course or 1 college creditcourse in Nutrition.3. You must take a 10 hour SNA approved Food Safety & Sanitation Core Course or 1college credit course in Food Safety & Sanitation, HACCP or Microbiology.Easy Directions for Certification Level 1 (see the screen shots from the NFSMI website at theend of this letter):1. National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) offers two online courses thatmeet the above requirements. Both are free of charge.2. Nutrition 101 will meet the Nutrition Education Course.

3. Serving It Safe will meet the Food Safety & Sanitation requirement.4. Follow the step-by-step directions on the pages that follow to register with NFSMI andto register for the course(s).5. Once both courses are finished, Complete “New Certification Application” and submit allnecessary documentation (application, copy of diploma, copy of certificates from bothcourses, and payment)6. Once you have been certified by SNA, complete a “Faith Gravenmier ScholarshipApplication” so you may be reimbursed for Certification Application Fee.7. Display your new Certification Certificate within your kitchen/cafeteria. This certificatemay be printed from your “MySNA” page.

Why Should You Pursue the School Nutrition Specialist Credential?SNA established the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credentialing Program in 1997 to enhancethe professional image of school nutrition professionals, elevate professional standards andenhance individual performance. The SNS Credential is a mark of excellence and achievementthat reflects what it takes to manage school nutrition programs in today’s challenging climate.Who is Eligible for the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credential? You must have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher or You must have 60 hours of college credits or an Associate Degree and an additional 30college credits in nutrition-related fields or at least 3 years work experience is certainrelated areas.Go to the SNA website for complete details on eligibility requirements –http://www.schoolnutrition.org/. Go to the Career and Education tab, then ProfessionalDevelopment.

5. Click “Child Nutrition” to locate Nutrition 101 or “Food Safety” to locate Serving it Safe.6. It is recommend you only sign up for once course at a time. Complete course numberone then sign up and begin the second course.

7. Scroll down until you find the correct course. You can then hit “Register Now” on theright side.

8. Begin the class.9. When you complete the class you will be able to print a certificate. I recommend youdown load the certificate and save it on your computer as well as print it.
