Theyinvigorate us, challenge us, and inspire us. Being here every day with 800 amazing and complex young humans on the cusp of adulthood definitelykeeps our work interesting, and gives us hope for the future. We are thankful for our students who come to us ready to work. They remindus what preparedness looks like and model what we strive to be every day, ready, willing, and able to learn. We are thankful for our students who struggle. Many of our students arefacing hardships they do not realize are hardships.they are just a part oftheir everyday lives. These students show up, work hard to learn and connectwith others while they are here. They teach us to be appreciative of what wehave and allow us to see what hard work and perseverance really are.We are thankful for our students who come in bursting with confidence andenergy and enthusiasm for all that middle school offers. They show us the funthat we, as adults, often forget to have. They show us the possibilities everyday can bring and that maybe youth isn't really wasted on the young. We are thankful for our students who sometimes push the boundaries. ia printUpcoming Events11.16 SaturdayBoys Basketball 8th GradeTournament @ Lewis11.18 MondayNOBEL NIGHT @LAMSLibrary 5:30-7:00pmArt Club D-1 3-4pmMath Lab G-2 3-4pmGirls Basketball Tryouts:Outside Basketball Courts 3:15PTA Meeting 6 pm StaffLounge11.19 TuesdayGirls Basketball Tryouts:Outside Basketball Courts 3:15Boys Basketball @ Paulding3:30-6:00Math Lab: Rm G-6 3-4pmGSA: E-7 3-4pmMock Trial: Rm E-6 3:151/11

11/15/2019Post Details Laguna Middle Schoolremind us they are healthy and trying new things in the world. They show usthey are developing normally and are trying to figure things out.We are thankful for our introverts, who show us you can remain your quietself in the (occasional) chaos that is middle school. We are thankful for the kids who show up for all of the reasons they have to:that favorite teacher, that favorite friend, because it's a safe space, thelibrarian who talks with them, or the club or class they look forward to. Everyday is a new beginning and a chance to start anew. Getting here and beinghere allows us to be a part of moving that kid forward every day.Mostly, though, we are thankful for your kid. Yes, yours. Your kid is the onewe show up for, push to help each day, support, challenge, scratch our headsabout, celebrate, laugh with, worry about, and are proud to be a part of theirgrowth and learning. Thank you for sending us such a great kid.Bright Bytes SurveyWe are partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research and analyticscompany, in order to learn more about our students’ school and hometechnology use for learning. We are reaching out to ask you to take part in our school questionnaire. 11/15/2019Post Details Laguna Middle Schoolwired with warning lights, our bodies have subtle ways ofcommunicating emotions or things that need attentionbefore alerting us of distress. We may not have beentaught how to pay attention, but we can always learn waysto become better attuned to what our skin, digestivesystem, muscles, and thoughts are telling us.The weeks ahead of the holidays often seem to ramp up on the busy and can beoverwhelming for many. This is also the season for high school seniors and theirfamilies to have further conversations about future plans and where students seethemselves after high school. These conversations create importantopportunities and require us to be understanding, vulnerable, open, and honest. The college application process requires us to tap into our wells of courage, humility, and resilience. A good way to resource ourselves throughout theprocess is by practicing self-care and modeling it for our kids is equallyimportant. Self-care, after all, is not selfish, it’s deeply necessary.Anna Borges, senior health editor for Self magazine states, people now see selfcare as being about “mental health and taking care of yourself” (How to Make‘Self-Care’ Actually Feel Like Self-Care, The New York Times, November,2019). Our ideas about what self-care means evolve and are unique to eachindividual. As Borges goes on to say, “There’s no one definition. It all comesdown to how you take care of yourself in order to equip yourself with the toolsyou’ll need for your physical, mental and emotional health.”Whenever you are gearing up to do something challenging, difficult, or big or arejust feeling overwhelmed, consider making a self-care sandwich. Before andafter facing or doing something stressful or challenging, do something to care foryourself—take a walk before and make a cup of tea after, call a friend before andwatch or read for pleasure after, or listen to your favorite music before and take ashort nap after— you get the idea.53 Self Care Ideas for Physical, Emotional and Mental Health (ThriveGlobal, December, 2018)10 Smart, Simple Self-care Tips For Solid Mental Health (LindaEsposito, LCSW, Wired for Happy)Having recently gone through the senior year, college application process andnow navigating the transition, we share a few worthy reads:Turning the Tide II: How Parents and High Schools Can CultivateEthical Character and Reduce Distress in The College AdmissionsProcess (Making Caring Common, Harvard, March 2019)Top Tips from College Counselors For High School Students (Grown& Flown)Why parents should be concerned about their kids’ ‘EQ,’ not justtheir IQ (The Washington Post, September 19, dia print9/11
