About our Principal AuthorsRick Keller-Scholz has spent the last twenty years teaching atBellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma, WA, and the last ten yearsas a volunteer junior high parish minister. Rick also teaches in theArchdiocese of Seattle Catechetical Certification Program.Rick has been awarded “Catechist of the Year” from the SeattleArchdiocese and the Elizabeth Ann Kelley Teacher of the Year awardfrom Bellarmine. Jeannie performs around the country and has shared her skillat the 2001, 2003, and 2005 National Catholic Youth Conference, inaddition to other gatherings.About our Contributing AuthorsTherese Brown has nine years of experience with middle and highschool students as a volunteer catechist and youth minister. Asassociate director for the National Federation for Catholic YouthMinistry, she managed the National Catholic Youth Conference, thelargest regular gathering of Catholic young people in the UnitedStates. She also advocated for the needs of young people in the areasof liturgy, music, and vocations.She has written two books, Catechetical Sessions on Liturgy and theSacraments (Saint Mary’s Press) and Graced Moments: Prayer Servicesfor the Lives of Teens, volumes I and II, (World Library Publications),as well as sessions for Youth Ministry Access, a weekly online resourcefrom the Center for Ministry Development. Therese currently holdsthe position of senior marketing specialist in publishing at the UnitedStates Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC.
Christine Schmertz Navarro is a senior editor at Saint Mary’s Press,having taught several years in high schools and spent volunteertime with young adolescents. She is the principal author of theTeaching Activities Manual for “The Catholic Youth Bible,” coauthorof the Teaching Manual for “Living Justice and Peace: Catholic SocialTeaching in Action,” and editor of several other books, all publishedby Saint Mary’s Press.Christine and her husband, Rudy, live in Tacoma, WA, and have aneight-year-old daughter.Ann Nunes teaches middle school religion at the Convent of theSacred Heart Elementary School in San Francisco. She taught parishreligious education for many years and completed a master’s degreein theological studies at the Franciscan School of Theology inBerkeley, CA. Her thesis addressed adolescent moral formation.Ann has two grown children and lives in Concord, CA.Chris Wardwell teaches theology at Saint Thomas High School inHouston, TX, his alma mater. He has twelve years of experience inyouth ministry, parish religious education, and Catholic schools.He has an MA in pastoral ministries from Saint Mary’s University ofMinnesota and received honors for his research paper on adolescentmale spirituality.Chris and his wife, Christine, have an eight-year-old son.

IntroductionGetting to Know Breakthrough!The Bible for Young Catholics,Its Teaching Manual, and ItsStudent WorkbookThank you for picking up this exciting new Bible and its teachingactivities manual! All three resources—the Bible, the teaching manual,and the student workbook—work together to familiarize the youngeradolescent with the people of salvation history and to see themselvesas a vital part of the Church’s history.The Bible, the teaching manual, and the student workbook do notdepend on one another—they are interdependent and the use of eachstrengthens the positive characteristics of the other. (The teachingmanual and the student workbook do require the use of a Bible,however, even if it is not Breakthrough!)The Breakthrough! TrioBreakthrough! is a Bible with two companions: one for the studentreader and the second for the teacher’s use in guiding young peoplewho are studying it.The BibleBreakthrough! The Bible for Young Catholics will be your strongestresource for introducing young adolescents to the Scriptures. Everyelement of this Bible was carefully chosen or created to appeal toyoung people who are ten to thirteen years old. This starts with thechoice of using the Catholic Edition of the Good News Translationfor the Bible text. The Good News Translation was created with avocabulary and reading level appropriate to the younger student. Ifyou have been using translations with a more advanced reading level,you will notice an immediate difference in your student’s ability toread and understand the Bible text.Additionally, Breakthrough! provides many other tools to helpyoung people feel more comfortable and familiar with the Bible.Forty illustrated color inserts feature “interviews” with the biblicalcharacters. These character interviews quickly identify the importantevents in the biblical character’s story and the role this person played
Introductionin salvation history. A four-page salvation history time line at thebeginning of the Bible shows how these biblical characters fit intoGod’s big picture of salvation history.Another key feature is the inclusion of Pray It! Study It! Live It!and Catholic Connection articles. These articles appear alongside thebiblical text in forty biblical books. The forty books were chosen toprovide the best overview of salvation history and a representativesampling of the different types of books found in the Bible. For theseforty books, the articles provide a commentary to help young readersbetter understand and apply the biblical message to their life. PrayIt! articles give the young reader ideas about applying the spiritualityof the Bible. Study It! articles give them background so that theybetter understand the context of the passages they are reading.Live It! articles challenge the young people to live biblical valuesand teachings. Six professionals from around the United Statescoauthored this manual to help Catholic middle school teachers,parish catechists, and youth ministers explore the Bible with youngpeople.This teaching manual gives suggestions about ways you canintroduce and explore key figures in salvation history. Studyingthe Bible by learning the stories of its main figures interests youngadolescents because they are very curious about people—themselves,their friends, their families, people they meet. People are endlesslyfascinating. This holds true for Bible people as well.Depending on their level of biblical literacy, your students will becontinuing or beginning a life journey with figures from the Old andNew Testaments who will inspire, challenge, and puzzle them, yetultimately be very important in their own spiritual lives. Given thesignificance of these biblical people for all Catholics, it is importantto talk about them with young adolescents. As they grow older, theywill encounter the familiar stories anew, bringing to the stories theissues and questions that are first and foremost on their mindsand hearts at that time.
