Things are in full swingin 4th grade. We are preparing to head out onour first Learn to Ski/Snowboard trip to theCamden Snow Bowl this Thursday. In math weare all about fractions! Reading them, writingthem, seeing them, comparing them. Inreading we are working to determine the themeof our reading passages. We have read somefolktales and dramas with animals as the maincharacters.all learning a lesson from theirexperience. In writing, we just completed ourpersonal narratives. In social studies, wecontinue to find facts related to our rootvegetable research, and we are working on ourmap skills. Typically, the topthree spellers, with one alternate, are selected for a total of nine contestants. However, this year withword after word spelled correctly, there will be eleven students, with four alternates, stepping into thespotlight. On Wednesday, January 15th starting at 10:00 in Mr. Munson's room. Thisexcellent presentation was an eye-opening introduction into the events that led up to the Nazi partycoming into control and the systematic annihilation of over 6 million Jews and over 5 million other"enemies of the state".3

Middle School Is!Each trimester, students in the middle school are challenged over the course of the trimester to readseven, or more, novels of their choice. No matter the genre, the author, or the length of the book,students are encouraged and expected to read as much as possible.Having said this, the following are the total number of pages read during the first trimester:6th grade: 46,845 pages7th grade: 23,586 pages8th grade: 30,863 pagesTotal pages read: 101,294 pagesDuring this second trimester, we have set a goal of reading a total of 125,000 pages. Since reading is alife-long pursuit, we would like to extend a friendly challenge to YOU, the community of AVS, to keeptrack of the number of pages YOU read and help us not just reach our goal but also EXCEED it!How do you do this? http://www.avs.fivetowns.netJanuary 9,2020Welcome Sarah Phillips!This winter Appleton is participating in the Educator in Residence Program, where staff members from theLeadership School at Kieve are placed at schools for 10 weeks: January 2nd-March 10th. Our educator, SarahPhillips, will be helping out in various classrooms, running after school programs, and will be assisting withthe upcoming musical. Ms. Sarah is very excited to be a member of AVS!Sign Ups for After School ProgramsStarting the week of January 21st, after school programs will be offered by Ms. Sarah on Tuesdays from 3-4PM for grades K-2 and on Wednesday from 1:40 to 4:00 PM for grades 3-6. Activities are weather dependent,but may include sledding, snowshoeing, group games & team challenges, arts and crafts, board games, orhomework time. The first round of sign-ups will be for 4 weeks: January 21st through February 14th. Anotherround of sign-ups will be offered after February break. While we would love for all students to be able toparticipate, space is limited to the first fifteen for grades K-2 and the first 20 for grades 3-6. To sign up, pleasereturn the form and be sure to pick your student up promptly at 4PM. Typically caused byprolonged exposure to cold temperature,hypothermia can be prevented by recognizing therisk factors and signs of this medical emergency,according to the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC).82.5 F), the victim loses consciousness and theirpulse may not be apparent.How to treat hypothermiaIf you notice any symptoms of hypothermia, takethe person’s temperature. If it is below 95 F, thesituation is an emergency—get medical attentionimmediately. If medical care is not available, beginwarming the person, as follows: Common risk factors for hypothermia are youngand advanced age, substance abuse, and alteredmental impairment. Warning symptoms for hypothermia lethargyweakness and loss of coordinationconfusionuncontrollable shiveringreduced respiratory or heart rate.Among infants, warning signs also include brightred skin and low energy. In cases of severehypothermia (core body temperature is less than6 Get the victim into a warm room orshelter.If the victim has on any wet clothing,remove it.Warm the center of the body first—chest, neck, head, and groin—using anelectric blanket, if available. Or use skinto-skin contact under loose, dry layers ofblankets, clothing, towels, or sheets.Warm beverages can help increase thebody temperature, but do not givealcoholic beverages. Do not try to givebeverages to an unconscious person.After body temperature has increased,keep the person dry and wrapped in awarm blanket, including the head andneck.Get medical attention as soon aspossible.A person with severe hypothermia maybe unconscious and may not seem tohave a pulse or to be breathing. Come to Camp Kieve,located on 42 Kieve Rd in Nobleboro on the second Friday of each monthfor Community Climb Night, 6-9pm. Dates are: January 10th, February 14th,March 13th, April 10th, and May 8th. Climbing is held in the Buck Building atKieve. Kieve welcomes a 5 donation per climber. There is no experience orequipment necessary.
