More Precious Than DiamondsSuppose in one room we gathered Duffy, Kidd, Diego, Lutheran, Langereis, Vel,and Junior. This would constitute a most extraordinary meeting because these arethe names of the rarest blood types ever identified. Only 550 people in the worldhave Lutheran blood making it more precious than diamonds. But if in thatmeeting we included a man named Thomas from Switzerland, you would have therarest meeting in the history of the earth. There's no engaging name for Thomas'blood, except some have gone so far as to call it. His blood is RH-null and it is soextraordinary that, of the 7.5 billion people in the world, only 43 have ever been identified as havingit and only nine are active blood donors today. Most people know there are eight blood types: A, B, AB, and 0, positive or negative. But each ofthese blood types can be divided into distinct varieties depending on which antigens the bloodcontains or doesn't contain. It's important to know the antigen profile of blood because, if the wrongantigen combination is transfused, a patient can die. Even so, doctors do millions of transfusionsevery day with few complications. Golden blood, however, is unique and that is an understatement.Rh-null has no antigens. It can be accepted by anyone with a rare blood type in the RH system andthat makes it infinitely precious. It is so precious that it is never used except under the most extremecircumstances. The flip side is that a person with RH-null blood can only accept RH-null blood. That meansThomas of Switzerland should never find himself in the position of needing a blood transfusion. Ifhe does, he should certainly not find himself in a remote part of the world. This rare blood can beprovided if the tiny number of donors are available, but it requires an international mobilizationof blood providers to do it. Much would depend on timing and Thomas' location. In 2014, Thomastold Mosaic Science that he drives carefully and doesn't take exotic vacations but he does ski.HealthCornerGlaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible visionloss and is the second leading cause of blindness. According to the Glaucoma Research foundation, a completeeye exam includes these five common tests to detect the disease:This test measures the pressure within your eye. Eye drops are used to numb the eye, thena doctor or technician uses a device called a tonometer to measure the inner pressure of the eye; a smallamount of pressure is applied to the eye by a tiny device or by a warm puff of air.Another one you may be familiar with. The doctor uses eye drops to dilate your pupilsso he can examine the shape and color of the optic nerve.A visual field test used to map your complete field of vision. During the test, you look straightahead and indicate when a moving light passes your peripheral vision. After a glaucoma diagnosis, visualfield tests are done once or twice a year to check for changes in vision.During this exam, the eye is numbed with eye drops, and then a contact lens is placed on theeye. The contact lens has a mirror that shows the doctor if the angle between the iris and cornea is closedand blocked or wide and open, each of which can be signs of different types of glaucoma. This test measures the thickness of your cornea using a probe called a pachymeter, which isplaced on the front of the eye (cornea). You are six times more likely to get glaucoma if you are over 60 years old so talk to you doctor about schedulingregular eye health screenings and protect your vision.
