As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA’s industry-validatedcompetitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in thecareer clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance,and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s flagship evaluation process involves studentsin both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactivecomponent with an industry professional serving as a judge. DECA’s competitiveevents directly contribute to every student being college and career ready whenthey graduate from high school.QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTERING INTERNATIONALCONFERENCE COMPETITIVE EVENTS1. All participants must be activemembers of DECA with thecurrent year’s dues on file withDECA Inc. prior to March 1 of thecurrent school year.5. All entry forms and creativeentries must be submittedby the chartered associationadvisor or designee according toannounced deadlines.2. All participants and writtenentries must be approvedand authorized for enteringcompetition by their charteredassociation through officialcompetitive events registrationforms.6. A participant may enter only oneof the competitive events with aparticipatory component duringDECA’s international conference.3. All participants and writtenentries must meet thespecifications set forth for eachactivity.4. All participants must haveparticipated in charteredassociation, district and/or localcompetition, or qualified throughonline competition.DECA ICDC 2019 REGISTRATION KIT7. No additions or substitutionsmay be registered forcompetition after the deadlineset forth by DECA Inc.8. A written entry may not beentered in more than oneinternational conferencecompetitive event during a givenyear.9. Once a written entry is enteredin international conferencecompetition, the identicalcontent material may not beentered again in internationalconference competition.10. All participants must attend thebriefing sessions scheduled fortheir competitive event duringthe international conference.11. Participants are required tofollow the official DECA dresscode.12. All written entries must includea signed copy of DECA’s WrittenEvent Statement of Assurancesand Academic Integrity.13. Participants must bring a photoID to all event briefings, testingsessions and presentations.If a photo ID is not available,an advisor must verify theparticipant’s identity.14. All participants must behoused at their assigned officialconference hotel.

EVIDENCE OF STUDENTLEARNINGTRANSCRIPTSSupporting college and career readiness, DECA’s competitiveevents transcripts express each member’s performance ratedagainst National Curriculum Standards identified as essentialknowledge and skills and 21st Century Skills. DECA transcriptsprovide evidence of student learning and achievement asdemonstrated by their participation in DECA’s CompetitiveEvents Program at the International Career DevelopmentConference.DECA transcripts are an exceptional tool to provide feedbackfor both advisors and members in helping them assess areasfor improvement in course instruction and student learning.The transcripts provide ranking and performance measuresfor each instructional area on the career cluster exam andfeedback for each performance indicator and/or evaluationcriterion the judge evaluates.Because of the structure of DECA’s competitive eventsprogram, all data is normalized and should be viewedas a snapshot of performance rather than a competitionranking.DECA transcripts are yet another tool in demonstratingDECA’s commitment to integrating DECA into classroom instruction, applying learning,connecting to business and promoting competition. One of these commonrequirements is that students must obtain an industry certification or credential in order to graduate, aligned tothe diploma the student seeks.DECA members who take the Hospitality and Tourism Cluster Exam at ICDC and score at least 70% will be eligible for AmericanHotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) Certified Guest Services Professional Certification. AHLEI’s Certified Guest ServicesProfessional Certification will cost DECA members 20 compared to AHLEI’s pricing of 50 for AHLEI members and 70 for nonmembers.
