As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA’s industry-validatedcompetitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in thecareer clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance,and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s flagship evaluation process involves studentsin both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactivecomponent with an industry professional serving as a judge. DECA’s competitiveevents directly contribute to every student being college and career ready whenthey graduate from high school.QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTERING INTERNATIONALCONFERENCE COMPETITIVE EVENTS1. All participants must be activemembers of DECA with the currentyear’s dues on file with DECA Inc.prior to March 1 of the currentschool year.2. All participants and written entriesmust be approved and authorizedfor entering competition by theirchartered association throughofficial competitive eventsregistration forms.3. All participants and written entriesmust meet the specifications setforth for each activity.4. All participants must haveparticipated in charteredassociation, district and/or localcompetition, or qualified throughonline competition.5. All entry forms and creativeentries must be submitted by thechartered association advisor ordesignee according to announceddeadlines.6. A participant may enter only oneof the competitive events with aparticipatory component duringDECA’s international conference.7. No additions or substitutions maybe registered for competition afterthe deadline set forth by DECA Inc.8. A written entry may not be enteredin more than one internationalconference competitive eventduring a given year.9. Once a written entry is enteredin international conferencecompetition, the identical contentmaterial may not be enteredagain in international conferencecompetition.10. All participants must attend thebriefing sessions scheduled fortheir competitive event during theinternational conference.11. Participants are required to followthe official DECA dress code.12. All written entries must includea signed copy of DECA’s WrittenEvent Statement of Assurancesand Academic Integrity.13. Participants must bring a photoID to all event briefings, testingsessions and presentations. If aphoto ID is not available, an advisormust verify the participant’sidentity.14. All participants must be housedat the assigned official conferencehotel.

For each Principles ofBusiness Administration Event, Team Decision Making Event, Individual Series Event,Personal Financial Literacy Event, Marketing Representative Event and ProfessionalSelling and Consulting Event, participants with top scores in each section of thepresentation component will each receive a silver-ribbon medallion. EVIDENCE OFSTUDENT LEARNINGTRANSCRIPTSSupporting college and career readiness, DECA’s competitiveevents transcripts express each member’s performance ratedagainst National Curriculum Standards identified as essentialknowledge and skills and 21st Century Skills. DECA transcriptsprovide evidence of student learning and achievementthrough their participation in DECA’s Competitive EventsProgram at the International Career DevelopmentConference.DECA transcripts are an exceptional tool to providefeedback for both advisors and members in helping themassess areas for improvement in course instruction andstudent learning.The transcripts provide ranking and performancemeasures for each instructional area on the career clusterexam and feedback for each performance indicator and/or evaluation criterion that the judge evaluates.Because of the structure of DECA’s competitive eventsprogram, all data is normalized to provide this feedbackand should be viewed as a snapshot of performancerather than in terms of final competition rankings.DECA transcripts are yet another tool in demonstratingDECA’s commitment to integrating DECA into classroom instruction,applying learning, connecting to business and promoting competition. One ofthese common requirements is that students must obtain an industry certification or credential in order tograduate, depending on the diploma the student seeks.Certified Guest Services Professional (CGSP) Certification through a new partnership with the American Hotel and LodgingEducational Institute (AHLEI). DECA members who take the Hospitality and Tourism Cluster Exam at ICDC and score at least70% will be eligible for AHLEI’s Certified Guest Services Professional Certification.
