Standard Comms Rooms SpecificationRoomConfigurationGeneralTo be defined in the project brief but shouldmeet requirements as per layout configurationsbelowElectricalDistributionBoardsFor new refurbishment projects requiring newComms rooms, a dedicated distribution board(see separate DB spec) fed from a main loadpanel. DB should be located outside of thecomms rooms. Each distribution board must have dedicatedcircuits for the following: Circuit to each rack; Circuit for small power; Circuit for lighting; Circuit for ventilationEach circuit to be individually protected to avoida problem of one affecting anotherSmallPowerMinimum 1 double socket outlet percabinet, equally spaced around theroom. Each cabinet is to be hard wired intoindividually switched fused spurs. In comms rooms where there are 3 or morecabinets, 1 x 16amp commando socket is required– this is project specific and must be approved byCUL ISIO Dept.LightingLighting must be off centre to ensure evenillumination around cabinets. Lux level must reach a minimum of400 lux to 1m on horizontal plane.ContainmentTrays or baskets will be project specific.Cable entry from above into the comms roomis preferred.Fire DetectionCUL has an L1 system, refer to separate FireAlarm specification.GeneralTemperatures within comms rooms shouldnot exceed 24oC, 24/7, therefore the designcalculations should establish whetheradditional cooling is required. 1standard-comms-room-spec-v-1.3 24 09 14

MechanicalCoolingCooling is required and must meet N 1; wall mounted split units should beinstalled; where possible system should connectinto existing chilled water system;Drip and leak detection should be Incorporatedinto the design.FlooringFlooring should be anti-static vinyl, colour isproject dependent.WallsCeilingsFabric See separate paint specification.Should be exposed soffit, see separate paintspecification for finishes.SecurityDedicated comms room to be provided, standard ISIO core should be used, wherethis does not apply CUL to advise and ISOto approve.Data pointallowance[This information should also be specifiedelsewhere for project designers.]The following data points should be allowed for: Individual offices – 4 data points perperson (3 x data, 1 x telephone)Open Plan offices – 3 data points per person(2 x data, 1 x telephone)Cabinet SizesPreferred standard for cabinets:42U full size cabinet: Can accommodate approximately 360data points – approximately 90 desks.NB. These figures do not include wirelessdemand, door controllers, cctv, etc , this isproject specific and should be confirmed withISIO. In situations where full- height racks cannotbe used, ISIO should be consulted regarding analternative smaller rack.Alternatives to be agreed with ISO:Half-height cabinet: Can accommodate approximately 80data points – approximately 25 desks.15U Wall mounted cabinets Can accommodate no more than 72 datapoints. Can accommodate no more than 2network switches2standard-comms-room-spec-v-1.3 24 09 14

SwitchesThe Project Manager should allow a budget forswitches within the project development costs. One switch accommodates 40 data points(Approximate cost 4.5k per switch, excl VAT).Number required can be confirmed by ISIONew buildings will also require 2 buildingdistributions switches, a budgetary cost of 15k VAT should be set aside for this.Adding comms rooms to existing buildings need asurvey to ensure that enough switch ports areavailable at the Building Distribution switches, ifno spare capacity an extra cost of up to 15k VAT will need to be added to the budget.TechnicalInformationCablingCabinet rooms should be sited approximately forthe areas whose data points they feed, thelength of cable run must be no more than 80m toa data point.Cabling must comply with Cat5e standards. There should be a convenient route to run fibreback to the building distribution location. 8 coreOM3 multi-mode fibre for 1-2 cabinets, 16 coreMO3 multi-mode fibre for 3-4 cabinets, and fibrewith SC termination. In the case of new buildings the project musttake into account the requirement for a Networkand Telecoms link back to the main building, thiswill be either achieved by using Dark Fibre or aManaged WAN Service provided by externalcompanies, quotes for these works must beobtained by Information Services.UPSrequirementsA UPS must be provided in each cabinet:---Applicable SKAGood PracticeMeasureWall mounted cabinets should only have amaximum of 2 switches and will require anAPC Smart-UPS 750VA:SMT750RMI2U,budgetary cost 450 VATFloor standing cabinet with up to 6 switches, will require an APC Smart-UPS1000VA:SMT1000RMI2U, budgetary cost 500 VATFloor standing cabinet with up to 8 switches, will require an APC Smart-UPS1500VA:SMT1500RMI2U, budgetary cost 600 VATE22 IT and Comms Room EnergyConsumption -Dedicated IT and communicationrooms have a calculated DCIE (data centreinfrastructure efficiency) of 70% or greater.3standard-comms-room-spec-v-1.3 24 09 14

Important note:This standard sets out the basic functional requirements for a typical new or refurbishedteaching room. The actual work required for a particular project will be determined in aseparate SCOPE OF WORKS DOCUMENT - some elements may not be present or requirereplacement. The racks for comms equipment should not be used for any other type of equipment, such as servers. Please note any value engineering relating to Comms Room must be approvedby ISIO to ensure the integrity of the equipment is not compromisedAVERAGE ROOM BREAKDOWN:Number of Ports Per 30 Users:Network PortTelephoneWireless PortMFD & FaxDisplay Screen6030121Number of Ports Per "block" calculated at 6 users per block:Network PortTelephone PortWireless PortMFD & FaxDisplay Screen126121per 5 blocksClassrooms/PC Labs/Meeting room:PodWireless portStudent machineCamera830-40 seats 1APAP mounted on ceiling48-80 seats 2APAPs mounted on ceiling80-120 seats 3APAPs mounted on ceiling120-180 seats 4APAPs mounted on ceiling180 must liaise withAPs mounted on ceilingInformation ServicesBudget per AP should be 500 VAT (extraequipment might be required if currentinfrastructure at full capacity, liaise withInformation Services to determine capacity andalso for costs)21high levelNote: Wireless Access point positioning requires a survey to be carried out by a contractor inorder to determine the correct positioning of the ceiling level data points, these surveys incur anadditional cost. Liaise with Information services prior to the start of the cabling project. If work iscarried out without the input from Information Services the ceiling level data points might haveto be moved or new points installed at extra cost.4standard-comms-room-spec-v-1.3 24 09 14
