www.VirginiaNurses.comLaura Nakoneczny, CAE, IOMWhat an exciting time this is for nursing and theVirginia Nurses Association!Nursing has been referred to as the oldest of artsand the youngest of professions. The untrainednurse is as old as history, while in comparison, the trained and educated nurse is a relatively newdiscovery. Our current healthcare environment presentsnurses with opportunities that have never beforebeen imagined. Opportunities to lead changein healthcare delivery systems—not just adapt.Opportunities to create the future for our profession—not merely adjust to the dreams of others.Every day delivers new, exciting challenges andopportunities for nursing and I’m excited to joinyou on the journey as the new CEO of the VirginiaNurses Association.VNA is ideally positioned and ready to tacklewhat lies ahead. It boasts a sound organizationalstructure, stable finances, and engaged memberswho take the lead on issues impacting theprofession. It also has the respect and support of keypartners and allies who impact the profession. Its leadership understands that, like anyorganization, there are places where things can beimproved. Despite projections of impending nursingshortage, VNA needs to grow. Membership isfundamental for VNA to continue in its role as theadvocate for Virginia’s nurses. For membership to grow, the unique value thatVNA provides nurses must be better understood. The perceived value of affiliating with specializednursing associations needs to be countered byvisible coverage of VNA’s leadership and actions onbehalf of nurses, but also on behalf of healthcareconsumers in the Commonwealth.Like other organizations, VNA will also need tothink about how it can adapt to the way membershipparticipation is changing as a result of generationalshifts, social changes, and the technology-easedThe #1 Choice for Nursing Professionals!Immediate need for Critical Care,Med/Surg, OR, and ER Your choice of assignments Expand your skills Per-Diem 24-hour support team Short and long term contracts available Flexible hours and more!To apply, call804-716-9200www.carepartners.netVirginia Nurses Todayaccess to content and community. Change is acondition of life and VNA is not immune to itsdemands. While legislative and regulatory policies willcontinue to threaten nursing, they can be monitoredand controlled. Business costs will continue to rise, and corporate and non-traditional competition willincrease exponentially. But again, these threats aremanageable. As I join VNA, the only real barrier I see standingin the way of our success is us. Working insuch a dynamic environment, it’s easy to fall preyto distractions and pseudo-opportunities thatultimately provide little value to the big picture ofVirginia nursing. VNA lacks the staff and financialresources to be all things to all nurses, and stayingon focus to deliver our mission may be our mostdifficult and pressing priority. In the coming weeks, I’ll be working withleadership to examine and implement the nextsteps in VNA’s future through its strategic plan. Theexperience will be stimulating to say the least.I’m also eager to get to know you better. Whetherwe meet through a chapter, at an education session,at a coming event, or on the phone it’s your insightsand perspectives that make VNA the valuableorganization it is and I can’t wait to meet you.To start the process of getting to know each other, here are a few details about me.I’m joining VNA after nearly 25 years ofassociationmanagementexperience.Havingworked for large, national associations and smallerstatewide groups, I definitely prefer the moremeaningful involvement I have with members insmaller groups like VNA.Although my peers tend to consider me “executivemanagement” I actually tend to think of myselfas a generalist. I’ma Certified Association Executive (CAE), and alsoa graduate of a five year non-profit managementprogram at the University of Delaware (IOM).While working with nurses, will be new to me,healthcare and nursing-related issues won’t be.That’s because my family includes a doctor, acardiovascular practice administrator, five MSNs,one current med student, one future med student,an LPN and lots of hospital volunteers. (To keep upwith conversation at holiday dinners, I actuallysideline as a registered pharmacy technician andhospital volunteer.)My husband, Dave, and I have three sons whorange in age from 16 to 23. The eldest, David, studies business marketing in Ohio. Brandon, our18 year-old, hopes to graduate high school thisspring, but hasn’t committed to anything beyond hisplans to eagerly move out. That leaves our youngest, Michael, at home. SinceMike is mostly focused on his GPA and hospitalvolunteer work (he plans to be an orthopedicsurgeon), life at home generally revolves aroundDave’s odd hours (he’s in management with Target),and various four-legged creatures our sons collected.I’m very much looking forward to making you andthe needs of Virginia’s nurses, a new priority in mylife. Pickral, Jr.VNA Legislative ConsultantThe Virginia General Assembly adjournedon Saturday, March 10th. While adjourning onschedule, the legislature, for the eighth time since2000, required extra time to work on the statebudget. While not completing budget work on timehas become standard practice; this year’s impasse isunique.Coming off of elections for both the House ofDelegates and the Senate there was a generalconcern as to how the 2012 session would progress. While nothing had really changed in the House, except for republicans extending their majority, theSenate was tied with twenty democrats and twentyrepublicans. This caused a great deal of uncertaintyespecially regarding who would be in control of theSenate. Republicans, with the help of a republicanLieutenant Governor, were the ultimate victors. However, one of the items that the Lt. Governorcannot vote on is the state budget.
