SIUE OverviewSouthern Illinois University Edwardsville traces itsorigin to a recommendation in 1956 by the SouthwestIllinois Council for Higher Education. The council wasconvinced that higher education facilities were needed inthe Metro East part of the greater St. Louis area. Councilmembers hired consultants, whose reports documentedthat need, and appealed to Southern Illinois University,100 miles south, to establish satellite campuses. In1957, SIU opened two “residence centers” in Alton andEast St. Louis. The University expected to enroll 800students; nineteen hundred applied. By 1959, the numberof students had doubled to 3,800, greatly exceeding thephysical facilities and demanding services faster than theUniversity could develop and supply them.A planning team investigated sites in the Metro Eastand selected one just south of Edwardsville. In 1960,the Illinois legislature authorized a bond issue forconstruction of a new state university campus. Voterapproval came in November 1960. After two and a halfyears of planning, University officials and area residentsattended ground-breaking ceremonies for the firstpermanent buildings. In fall 1965, SIUE moved onto its new campus: 2,660acres of rolling land and woods and waters. Much of theland still retains its natural shape. The academic centerwas designed by the internationally known architecturalfirm of Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum of St. Louis. The brick, slate and granite of the contemporary buildingscomplement the terrain and are softened by a carefullydesigned garden landscape that attracts visitors by itsphysical beauty. The campus has received several awardsfor its successful blend of the aesthetic and the functionalin a setting that enhances growth and development and isnow featured among the top 150 Illinois Great Places bythe American Institute of Architects Illinois Council.Today, SIUE is a premier Metropolitan Universitywith more than 14,000 students enrolled.
