The first few monthlymeetings were held at 459 LakeAvenue, the design firm of ourpresident Natalie Weinstein. In2018, we moved to the upperfloor of 176 Second Street, thehome of Uniquely Natalie Quality Consignments and the formerhome of an historic vaudevilletheatre. It was The St. James Theatre, and in later years, The Calderone Movie Theatre. There, thebeginning of a humble St. Jamesmuseum was born.In 2019, the little museumgrew into an Historic St. JamesCalderone Movie Museum and agallery for art exhibits. –8–A R O U N DT O W NThe Mystery of Our Historycontinued from page 6vice president and photographer,Jack Ader are always on display.Themed art gallery shows became regular events, starting inSeptember 2019 with a movingTribute to 911, followed by TheArt of St. James, and Art Celebrating Women in January andMarch 2020 respectively. Localartists were invited to displaytheir works for each show, andopening night receptions madethe events special. Then, we tooka time out to endure a pandemic. For those of you who came tothe art shows, shopped atUniquely Natalie, or enjoyed themany events hosted by CelebrateSt. James, you would always betold that “the original tin ceilingfrom the vaudeville theatre” isstill there. But did you everwonder if its walls could talk, what else would they say? WhenCelebrate St. James produced the“famous” show, “99 Minutesfrom Broadway” in October2018, writer and director NatalieWeinstein created a fictionalstory of the famous actors andpoliticians who once came to St.James, and perhaps many ofthem either performed or visitedthe St. James Theatre. So now, my neighbors andfriends, we are asking you tohelp solve some of the mysteryof our history. St. James is proudto be home to many familieswho have lived here for generations. Perhaps you, your parents,or grandparents, or great-grandparents have told stories of theiryouth in this town, and in particular, about the old theatre. When Natalie Weinstein and herhusband were renovating thebuilding in the late 1980’s, anelderly couple passed by andtold them of their younger days“making out” in the back of thetheatre! (They didn’t use thoseexact words!)If you have a story to tell, would you please be kindenough to share it with us. Wewill keep them on display at themuseum and perhaps nextmonth we can share some ofthem with you in OUR TOWN.Please send your stories to celebratestjames@gmail.com, or mailWeekly MaintenanceLandscape Design BuildMy object is to always considerthe sprit of the land & place. To ensure, through collaborationwith my clients, that Isuccessfully create a unique gardenreflective of their personality and taste, and to never allow formulato dictate creativity.A poster from a 1940 movie wasfound stuffed in the ceiling of Calderone’s St. James Theatre.to Celebrate St. James at 459Lake Avenue, St. James.Speaking of big dreams, Celebrate St. James is in collaborationwith the Town of Smithtown tobuild Celebrate Park on LakeAvenue, where the Irish VikingBar once stood.
