Last year was difficult for somany of us in so many different ways. For our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing, I would encourageall to focus on what we can do verses everything we cannot do - and remember, we are in the home stretch!Vaccines continue to be distributed and the safer at home orders were lifted. Our local restaurants areonce again able to serve our community safely outdoors and many small businesses that have beenstruggling need customers’ support to remain open. As Californians, let’s do all we can to contribute to andjump start our economy once again. What a time to be from California! From Alex Padilla joining the Senate, to Vice President Harris and herhusband Doug, and let’s not forget, Los Angeles based poet laureate, Amanda Gorman. At the young ageof 22, she inspired our nation to once again hope and dream of a united human species. This is a new dayand a deserving moment to celebrate the Biden Administration and welcome change of leadership thatwill help represent all Americans. We all know that there is much to do to solve the historic problems thathave befallen our state, as well as the rest of the country. It was not that long ago that the nation and theworld “looked west” to California for ingenuity, creativity and economic resourcefulness. Let’s continue topush forward, and work together better than ever. I have a long standing belief in the strength and powerof human kindness.“ As much as we need a prosperous economy, we also need a prosperity of kindness and decency”.Caroline KennedyStay well and be safe,Maria Nichols

Staff fi Joyce Dunbar, Program SpecialistDear Esteemed North Hollywood/Valley Village Schools, Families, and Community Members,It is an honor to serve this Community of Schools (COS) as your Program Specialist. I began my adventure as aneducator eighteen years ago at Dyer Street Elementary School. In my role as a Resource Specialist Teacher, I wasprivileged with the task of providing instructional services to students through the model of co-planning, co-teaching,coordinating special education services with general school programs, as well as with service providers andstakeholders to provide cohesive implementation of the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). From there I hadthe honor of serving within the same community, at Sylmar Charter High School again as a Resource SpecialistTeacher and then as an Intervention Support Coordinator. This rewarding experience gave me the opportunity to workcollaboratively with all stakeholders- using a systematic approach in reviewing data, to monitor the effectiveness ofschool-wide systems with the goal of providing interventions and supports to all students on our campus in acquiringlinguistic, academic, behavioral, and social competencies.Words cannot describe the joy I felt in celebrating the very students I taught in K-5, as they had reached theirachievement graduating from High School. This is only one of the countless fulfilling moments in my role as aneducator. The experience of being able to work at both the elementary and secondary school sites, within the samecommunity, not only gave me that gift, but also allowed me to see the value in schools coming together to build stronginstructional programs and supports for OUR students. I wholeheartedly believe in this model of Community ofSchools, that by aligning curriculum and instructional strategies, working together collaboratively with all communitystakeholders towards a common vision, we can best serve our students. In my current role as Program Specialist, I commit to carrying out this belief in my day-to-day work. I am excited tohave the opportunity to support our “21 Bold and Strong Schools” in establishing more inclusive practices, building thecapacity of educators, as well as supporting instructional programs through staff training (focusing on effectiveresearch-based practices), professional development, on-site coaching and planning. In connection to this work, I alsosupport our school sites in the preparation for, development of, and implementation of effective IndividualizedEducation Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities with the goal of achieving educational benefit. I am gratefulfor the opportunity to be a part of the North Hollywood/Valley Village Community of Schools and for the privilege toserve the students, families, and schools of this community. I look forward to sharing in many more fulfilling momentsof joy and joint successes with you.Cel te A ca P s e t y Re g T e ok North Hollywood ComplexFair EECBellingham ESBurbank Blvd ESCamellia Ave ESCarpenter Comm Chtr#21BoldandStrongNor l w o / Val V l a Colfax CESFair Ave ESRio Vista ESSendak ESVictory Blvd ESReed MSRomer MSEarhart HSNorth Hollywood SHCarlson Home/HospitalCom t o Sc sEast Valley ComplexToluca Lake EECLankershim ESOxnard St ESToluca Lake ESEast Valley SHScience Academy STEMMag. Positive Behavior & SupportHeading into February will begin with celebratingBlack History Month kicking off a Week of Action forBlack Lives Matter at School. The activities may look differentin each classroom, but the intent is to honor lives, inspireminds, and empower students to believe in their own influentiallegacies they will one day leave behind. Students can look torole models who are the epitome of courage and audacity, likeDr. Terrence Roberts who was one of the Little Rock 9, who said,“Human beings have the capacity to choose to change. We coulddo it if we wanted, we just haven't mustered the will to do it. Ifwhat you already know hasn't moved you to change, then changewhat you know.” With a new sense of purpose, reinforcinghabits of mind like learning from mistakes, and continued support in the classroom, students can sustainfocused determination to demonstrate resilience.Students are resilient after the toughest of times, but they have a better chance if they have thesefactors in their toolkit: connectedness, sense of safety, ability to calm, self-efficacy, community efficacy, andhope. When students are connected to at least one adult at home or on campus who believes in them and willnever give up on them, then students feel a sense of hope which allows them to carry on in the face ofchallenges. Critical hope can be fostered within the classroom by way of regular attendance, highexpectations, and a belief in oneself to achieve goals that one would never imagine possible. They can do this!Restorative Practices ResourcesResponsible risk taking allows students tounleash their growing sense of bravery andcourage when it matters most in theclassroom and in their work. It also beginswith the power of believing in themselvesall the way to trusting others to helpsupport them when they need it. Studentscan transform their way of thinking to bebraver when setting goals and carrying outthe necessary steps to accomplish them.Check out more videosJust checking in.willToday Ito reach.my goalryaurFeb ocusfwill ony.ticadua
