2014 Nevada Nurses AssociationReport of the President2014It is hard to believe that 2014 is half over and fall is coming. This has been an extremely busy and productive year for NNA.So much has already been accomplished with many excitingprojects in the near future. I am truly amazed at what NNAhas accomplished in advancing nursing and patient care inthe State of Nevada. As you read through the following pages, articles and reports, please remember that all of this hasbeen accomplished by volunteers giving their time to supportnursing in Nevada. I am very honored to be working with suchan outstanding group of professionals.Nurses Day at the Legislature (NDAL) 2015 will be coming inFebruary 2015 in conjunction with the State of Nevada 2015Legislative Session. In 2013, NNA made a strong showingin Carson City and we are looking forward to an even largerScott Lamprecht, DNP,attendance next spring. It is crucial for nurses to play a pivotalAPRNrole in the changing healthcare policy platform. Please plan onattending or contacting NNA to become involved in the legislative process. The Horizontal Violence and Healthy Nurse initiatives and a variety of other educationalCEU programs are in full forward motion. NNA has also launched an online educationand conferencing platform that will increase the access to CEUs, webinars, and otherNNA programs. Additionally this platform includes a video conferencing system thatwill allow for greater member communication and involvement. NNA is establishing aPractice Committee that will be focusing on issues specifically related to nursing practicein Nevada such as the staffing legislation from 2013.NNA is growing and becoming even more active in Nevada and needs your help.Organizations can only be successful when members are involved. Networking, education, advocacy, and practice are all part of what we do as nurses and being part ofa professional organization is a great way to accomplish a great deal.11

2014 Nevada Nurses AssociationJanuary 2014I am very pleased to provide a report on the educationalopportunities Nevada Nurses Association (NNA) has offered thispast year and the projects we are working on for the upcomingyear. Nurses communicated to us their desire for more CEUclasses. We listened and have offered more opportunities for ourmembers, nurses throughout Nevada and even nurses outside ofNevada. The Bioterrorism course continues to be highly utilizedby Nevada nurses as well as nurses across the country. From July2013 to July 2014, 221 nurses took the course; the majority ofthose nurses were not NNA members. This course continues to bea large revenue source for NNA. Other CEU courses provided byNNA during the same time frame are:Nicki Aaker AHRQ – Effective Health Care Program IntroductionWebinar Health Coach Training Two different presentations on Human Tracking Disruptive Behavior Train-the-Trainer Lateral Violence Train-the-Trainer Nevada Nurses Association Annual Meeting – Safe Staffing PanelIn addition, the Healthy Nurse Initiative provided additional educational opportunities. There is a lot to look forward to in the next year. The big and exciting news is thatNevada Organization of Nurse Leaders (NONL) and NNA have partnered to bringNevada’s nurses the “Leading Something Extraordinary” Nursing Conference, November16 – 18, 2014 at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. There are a lot of great sessions planned. The session titled Nevada’s Safe Staffing Law: What Does It Mean to Nevada Nurses andHospitals? will be videotaped and put on the NNA website (www.nvnurses.org) as a CEUeducational opportunity for all nurses and CNAs. I would like to take this opportunity tothank the conference committee for working so hard to make this opportunity availableto nurses!Another exciting event is the 2015 Nurses Day at the Legislature Conference onFebruary 25, 2015 at the Legislative Building in Carson City. Mark your calendarsand plan to attend. This is a great way to see learn what happens during a legislativesession, and what happens between sessions. There will be exciting presentations, plusnurses may have the opportunity to sit with his/her assembly representative or senator.NNA is going electronic. We are working on an electronic education portal which will beaccessible on the NNA website. Nurses will be able to take courses online and the CEUcertificate will be immediately available upon passing the course. This will be a hugeimprovement for the Bioterrorism Course.17

2014 Nevada Nurses AssociationThe Bioterrorism Course is being updated, narrated, and will be entirely online with thecertificate printable immediately. Also, for those of you needing to get another copy ofyour certificate, it will be available at your fingertips.
