Grabbing the baton from illustrious previous curators like Nick Cave and Yoko Ono, The Cure’s founder-frontman has used hisicon status to assemble a stellar ten-day line-up. Smith’s hand-picked mix of festival headliners, cult heroes and exciting lesser-known talent manages the same deft trick as his revered back catalogue: it’s somehow cohesive and eclectic at the same time. After all, Smith is a musician who’s been sliding between haunting melancholy (‘A Forest’), jazzynew wave (‘The Love Cats’) and perky pop (‘Friday I’m in Love’) for decades. Trent Reznor’s noise merchants Nine Inch Nails will bring industrial swagger to the normally genteel Royal Festival Hall, just days after its foundations are rocked by beloved indie rabble-rousers The Libertines. Manic Street Preachers will blast out their arsenal of bighearted arena anthems and Deftones will frighten a few tourists with their pummelling post-metal. Meanwhile, Placebo will attract a crowd of proud outcasts and emo warriors with angsty classics like ‘Nancy Boy’. Other highlights include sets from shoegazing pioneers My Bloody Valentine, rock oddballs Mogwai, Throwing Muses heroine KristinHersh, sublime singer-songwriter Kathryn Joseph and Welsh indie queen The Anchoress. The Psychedelic Furs are another major coup; their ’80s jangle-banger ‘Love My Way’ is enjoying a revival after soundtracking a key scene in ‘Call Me by Your Name’. Smith’s Meltdown also has a Brexit-defying European presence with sets from German indielegends The Notwist, Italian electro-rockers JoyCut, French post-metal crew Alcest and Swedish experimentalists pg.lost. And if you’re feeling cerebral, you can dive into Sigur Rós’s Liminal Soundbath, an immersive ambient sound installation that looks as trippy as a ’60s San Fran freakout. Expect the QEH foyer to be bathed in the soothing sonics ofthe Rós between June 20 and 22. The whole shebang will culminate with CURÆTION-25, Robert Smith’s career-spanning extravaganza where he’ll be joined on stage by a succession of special guests. He’s keeping their names close to his chest, or perhaps hidden inside his splendid nest of jet-black hair? But given that he’s worked with everyone fromSiouxsie Sioux and Crystal Castles to Billy Corgan and Blink-182, not to mention all those ex-Cure members, we can expect to be dazzled by a rock legend or two. Catching the cancer early and starting treatment is the best way to prolong life -- people with stage II ofthis kind of cancer live an average of 12 years after diagnosis.Oligodendroglioma is a type of tumor that begins in the brain or spinal cord (primary central nervous system). Oligodendrogliomas account for only about 1% to 2% of brain tumors.Oligodendrogliomas are grouped in two grades based on their characteristics.Grade II Low gradetumorsTumor cells grow slowly and invade nearby normal tissueIt may take years to be diagnosed because it may not cause symptomsGrade III Malignant (cancerous) tumorsFast-growing tumorsCalled anaplastic oligodendrogliomas Oligodendrogliomas may not cause any symptoms because they progress slowly. A chromosome abnormality involving loss of chromosomes 1p and 19q may be a factor. Risk factors foroligodendrogliomas may include: Exposure to radiation Certain gene changes that can be passed down through familiesAge: most often occurs in adults ages 50-60; rare in childrenGender: occurs more often in males than femalesEthnicity: most common in white and non-Hispanic people Treatment for oligodendrogliomas usually involves surgicalremoval of the tumor followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. It may not always be possible to completely curethe cancer, but the life expectancy of patients can be increased with treatment. Life expectancy depends on the grade of the tumor and how early a treatment plan is started. Patients with Grade II oligodendroglioma brain tumors are likely to live for 12 more years Patients with Grade III oligodendroglioma brain tumors are expected to live an averageof 3.5 years Cancer-Fighting Foods in Pictures: Resveratrol, Green Tea, and More See Slideshow Browsing through email announcements the other day, one caught my eye:"Researcher's herald breakthrough data on Alzheimer's."The article, on the website FierceBiotech, announced that Singapore-based TauRX Therapeutics had just released whatappeared to be spectacular data from Phase II clinical trials for their Alzheimer's drug, called Rember."Researchers say that Rember slowed cognitive decline in 81 percent of the patients taking the drug," the article said.If true, this was sensational news for the more than 24 million people who suffer from Alzheimer's disease; currently, there is noeffective treatment, and the number of people afflicted by it is forecast to double every 20 years, reaching 80 million by 2040.Success might also mean a break from rising costs connected to treating Alzheimer's, which is projected to cost Medicare 189 billion in 2015.I read on, learning that Rember acts by detangling a protein in the brain called Tauthat bunches up as the disease progresses. It's one of about 30 new medicines being tested right now to treat Alzheimer's. Other drugs work to prevent a build-up of plaques in the brain called amyloids.Another promising family of drugs works to boost nicotinic receptors in the brain that help regulate memory and cognition. At this gathering, Myriad Genetics provided the unfortunate details of its failed anti-amyloid drug, Flurizan, which the company was forced to abandon in June when it failed towork in clinical trials.The mood at the meeting was also darkened by a presentation from Elan Pharmaceutical and Wyeth that offered up confusing data about Bapineuzumab, another promising plaque-busting drug that looked as if it, too, might have failed in Phase II trials.It turned out that the news about Bapineuzumab was more nuanced than this.Overall, the drug had failed to work, but when researchers parsed through the data, they found that it had shown activity for a subset of test subjects, those who lacked a genetic trait called APOE4 that has been linked to a high risk for Alzheimer's.Elan and Wyeth will move the drug into a Phase III trial focusing on this subset of patients-though inChicago, this partial success was not fully understood. That news, coming on top of the Myriad flop, disappointed attendees and left them looking for some good news.Then Claude Wischik, co-founder and chairman of TauRx Therapeutics, delivered his news.Actually, Wischik, a researcher at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and an expert on theTau protein, reported mostly modest, but positive results from the podium.
