Comments for ContemplationThe Jonah ComplexJonah 1:11–16, 2:7–10, 3:10–4:3, 1 John 4:16b–191. “.for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” This is the passage that madesense to me only after I learned never to say the word again.2. Newton later wrote, “I sinned with a high hand, and I made it my study to tempt andothers.”3. And Jonah says to the Lord: I would not go there in a boat. I would not go there in a float. Iwouldnot go there in a gale. I would not go there in a whale. I do not like the people there. If they all died,I would not care. I will not go to that great town I’d rather choke. I’d rather drown. I will not go byland or sea. So stop this talk and let me . [Ortberg]5. This may be the worst sermon of all time. No mention of God or repentance or mercy. Noillustration, no application, no edification. Jonah is putting no into this at all. He’s phoning it in. [Ortberg]6. In the end we discover this story isn’t about Jonah. It’s about us and our to theLord.Printing provided by The Tom Fowler GroupPlease recycle.41200 South CollinsArlington, Texas 76010www.FirstPresTexas.org817-274-8286
