IntroductionAbout This GuideWelcome to the Cisco Prime Network Registrar IP AddressManagement (IPAM) 8.1.3, IP address planning and utilizationmanagement system. This Installation Guide is designed tohelp you install the Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAMproduct. You may refer to the Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM 8.1.3 User Guide for more product-specificinformation.Planning your InstallationThis section provides you with information needed to planyour Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM installation.Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM can be installed in acentralized or a distributed deployment. In a centralizeddeployment, all Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAMcomponents are located on a single server. This simplifies theinstallation and maintenance of the product but limitsscalability. Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM can also bedeployed in a distributed manner. Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM Agents can be deployed in the network closerto actual network elements (such as routers) and networkservices (such as DHCP servers). This allows Cisco PrimeNetwork Registrar IPAM to scale well in larger environments.Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM 8.1.3 Installation Guide 4

Centralized DeploymentIn a centralized deployment, the Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM Executive and the Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM Agent are installed on a single system.Distributed DeploymentIn a distributed deployment, a single Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM Executive is installed, and one or many CiscoPrime Network Registrar IPAM Agents are installed.Disaster Recovery PlanningYou may wish to take this opportunity to review the CiscoPrime Network Registrar IPAM Disaster Recovery Guide, incase you are planning on implementing an Executive disasterrecovery scenario.PrerequisitesThere are several prerequisites that are needed in order toconfigure and install your Cisco Prime Network RegistrarIPAM system. Installing Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM on UNIXHow to BeginThe following instruction should be completedregardless of which component of Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM you are installing.1. Login as root. Refer to your operating systemdocumentation for details.2. Insert the Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAMCD into your CD drive, and mount the drive. Ifyour system is using an automount feature, thisstep is not required. Refer to your operatingsystem documentation for correct syntax, andperform a command such as:mount -r –F hsfs /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s2 /cdrom3. Add a Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAMuser to your system that will own the installedfiles. We recommend adding the incadmin user.In all examples provided below, we useincadmin as the Cisco Prime Network RegistrarIPAM user. If you have selected a different username, replace incadmin with the user name youhave selected. Refer to your operating systemdocumentation for correct syntax, and perform acommand such as:useradd –d /opt/incontrol –s /bin/bash –c “INC” –mincadminpasswd –r files incadmin4. Make a home directory for the user if thecommand that executed in step 3 does not createCisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM 8.1.3 Installation Guide 23

a home directory. In our examples in thisdocument, we will use “/opt/incontrol” as ourdefault Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM“Home” directory. We refer to the Cisco PrimeNetwork Registrar IPAM home directory as INCHOME. Replace “/opt/incontrol” withyour own directory name in all commands belowif you have selected another directory name. Setappropriate permissions and change the owner ofthe directory. Use commands such as:cd /optmkdir incontrolchown incadmin incontrolcd /opt/incontrol5. Create a group that the Cisco Prime NetworkRegistrar IPAM user will be a member of. Thisgroup is used to restrict access to programs thatrequire the ‘setuid’ bit to be set due to requiredaccess to low-numbered ports.groupadd incontrol6. Edit the system’s group file and add theincadmin user to the group created in theprevious step. Refer to your operating systemdocumentation for correct syntax on addingusers to groups. The line in /etc/group mightlook like:incontrol::303:incadmin7. The system’s hostname must be mapped to a“real” IP address when using Cisco PrimeNetwork Registrar IPAM, and not to the127.0.0.1 (or “loopback”) address. Examine the/etc/hosts file and make sure the hostname isnot on the 127.0.0.1 server.example.comCisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM 8.1.3 Installation Guide 24

Incorrect127.0.0.1localhostmyserver8. Check to make sure you have at least 3GB of diskspace to install the application.df –k9. Copy the appropriate Cisco Prime Network RegistrarIPAM installation program for your supportedplatform (incinstall-linux32-oem.sh for RHEL 5.xand 6.x, or incinstall-solaris-oem.sh for Solaris 10Sparc) from the CD to the system “temp” directory(“/tmp”). Replace “cdrom” in the command belowwith the actual mount point/path.cp nux32-oem.sh10. Change permissions on the files that have been copiedso that you can run the incinstall-linux32-oem.shutility. Note that this file can be removed after theinstallation is completed:chmod x incinstall-linux32-oem.shNotes About UNIXAdditionally, the Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAMdiscovery engine mscan application requires rootprivileges. To accomplish this, the following steps aretaken during the initial install: Set the owner of INCHOME/mscan/mscan to root. Set the group owner of INCHOME/mscan/mscan to the name ofthe group specified in the main install screen(usually incontrol) Set permissions on INCHOME/mscan/mscan to 4750. Ofparticular note is the setuid bit (4). Thiscauses the program to run as the user whoowns the executable instead of the currentuser. Since the owner is set to root, thisCisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM 8.1.3 Installation Guide 25

makes it possible for non-root users to runthe application as root. The other bits (750)specify that the owner (root) hasread/write/execute, the group (incontrol) hasread/execute, and everyone else has nopermissions.Linux users: The library, libaio.so.1, is required beforeinstalling Cisco Prime Network Registrar IPAM withMySQL. If the library is not present on your system, youwill be notified during the installation.
