Message from a Lord FairfaxCommunity College Studentand Scholarship RecipientDear Donors of the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation Inc.:In December of 2008, I became one of several thousand Americans who lost their job. As asingle mother of three, I was unsure what I would do. I would not be able to make enoughto support my family. What do I do? Do I seek employment that would enable me to care formy children now? Or further my education and obtain a degree in nursing, enabling me toprovide a future for them as well?Doubt and fear began to emerge, as I had not set foot in a college classroom in quite sometime. My mind was overrun with thoughts like “Can I do this?”“Am I too old?” I had taken afew classes while in the military, but when I became a new mother, I could not see adding aneducation to the equation. My trepidation evolved into anticipation and I decided to takethat first step — the most fearful one of all — and apply to LFCC.When I found out thatI was awarded a scholarship, I was thrilled, as this was putting me yet another step closer toachieving my career goals. My longtime desire is to help others and to make a difference in my little corner of theworld. I believe that I can do that as a nurse. The generous donor who made my scholarship possible gave me a helping hand as woulda friend enabling me to venture into the unknown. Now, instead of being fearful, I lookforward to every step with excitement and expectation. Just as this donor’s kindness changedmy life, so, too, have your donations.Whether donating money for scholarships, classroomequipment or student activities, every dollar helps make us better learners, studentsand employees.Sincerely,Anita HribalLFCC student and scholarship recipient1

Foundation HighlightsLighting the WayFollowing are a few of the top gifts received in 2009:LFCC alumnus Diane Lewin continues tocontribute funds toward the Dolores LewinStryker Health Professions Scholarship Fund, which she established in her sister’s memory. Thescholarship is awarded to LFCC students enrolled in theAssociate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing Programor the Certificate in Practical Nursing Program. Lewincredits her experience at LFCC for her personal andprofessional growth:“In 1986, as a single mother in my late thirties, Ienrolled at LFCC. I was so nervous before my first classthat I had to stop the car on the way there to reassuremyself that I was doing the right thing. All of my anxiety was quickly put to rest. Ifound the welcoming, diverse student body and faculty fostered an environment ofinclusion rather than exclusion. The education and self-esteem Ireceived in the supportive atmosphereat LFCC – with the kind and personalattention of the professors – allowedme to become a self-confident,professional and productive memberof the community.”Upon earning a degree in businessadministration from LFCC, Lewinwent on to earn her bachelor’s inbusiness administration. “AttendingLFCC gave me the tools I needed tobecome successful. I am committedto making certain other potentialstudents are able to receive the sameexceptional level of education that Idid,” she said.3

Foundation HighlightsDr. Morgan Phenix, LFCC’s dean of learningfor humanities, mathematics and socialsciences established the Dr. Philip and GenaPhenix Endowed Scholarship in 2007, in memory of hisparents and their love of education. Dr. Phenix said thefollowing about his donation.“I want to support students in Page County on theirjourney – their personal quest. My personal relationshipwith Page County and LFCC has been most rewardingand I am grateful to be able to give something back.Giving provides an exponential increase through thelives of others – often in unseen and unanticipated ways. What exciting rewards!”Dr. Phenix, who represented Page County as a member of the College Board, was theprincipal at Page County High School for 16 years before coming to LFCC. His father,Philip, was the Arthur I. Gates Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Education atTeachers College at Columbia University. He taught education, philosophy, physics andtheology. Dr. Phenix’s mother was a faculty member at Barnard Columbia as well as amusician, scholar and spiritual counselor.4
