Message from a Lord Fairfax CommunityCollege Student and Scholarship RecipientDear Donors of the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation Inc.:I am Alayna Cooper, a proud LFCC student. Although I excel at my coursework at LFCC, the roadto get here has been a difficult one. Many people have fears. I am no exception. I fear schoolwork –especially math, writing and spelling. I have a non-verbal learning disability. I look like everyone else, because my disability is a hidden one. My middle school years were the most difficult. I could notread well, and I was tutored for math. I also started seeing a therapist because my social skills werenot maturing as needed. I entered high school with one goal in mind – to graduate on time with myfriends. My high school years were very difficult, but I worked hard and used a computer for all ofthem. I entered the business program and took Web and advanced Web classes. I also scored at thehonor’s level on the Standards of Learning exam. This was a great achievement for me.When I began attending the College last fall, there were several things that were unclear to me – Iwasn’t sure what my major should be or what my career goals were. However, my academic advisorsand the TRIO Program gave me the guidance I needed to choose a major and decide on a careergoal. I am now a full-time student in my second semester of LFCC’s Paralegal Studies CertificateProgram. I plan to either graduate from LFCC or transfer to a four-year college, and I would like topursue a career in family law. The continued support from LFCC employees and the scholarship Iwas awarded last year have helped to bring me one step closer to achieving my goals.I cannot thank you enough for the generous contributions that you made to the LFCC EducationalFoundation – contributions that have changed my life and the lives of so many other LFCC students.Contributing money toward scholarships is so important, because there are students who can’t affordto go to college, but they want a better life. Scholarships also help students who may not qualify forfinancial aid but cannot afford tuition and books. The scholarship that I was awarded last year has helped me tremendously with tuition and books. Iam so grateful to have received this scholarship, because, with the way the economy has been, it helpsto take the financial burden off of me so that I can focus on paying for my other expenses. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping so many students realize their dreams. I knowthat, on my journey through life, I will be continually thankful for the assistance and support thatyou have given to our community by helping students attain their goals at LFCC.Sincerely,Alayna CooperLFCC Student and Scholarship Recipient1

Foundation HighlightsFoundation HighlightsFollowing are some of the top gifts received in 2008:1.Fauquier Health contributed 75,000 to the Health Professions ProgramsFund, which was used to support LFCC’s health professions programs at theFauquier Campus. The funds were used for a variety of projects, including: To help fund the salary of a nursing faculty member To place an advertisement for the SurgicalTechnology Program To purchase equipment for LFCC’s Nurse Aide Training Program2. Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hazel contributed 25,000 toward theWilliam A. Hazel Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. After serving his country in the U.S. Army,William A. Hazel moved to Broad Run in1957 and founded William A. Hazel Inc., atotal site development contractor company. For nearly half a century, Hazel and hiscompany have supported Northern Virginia’seconomic development and growth throughall aspects of site development and roadconstruction. But Hazel is just as committed tophilanthropy. He proved this in 2005 bydonating 100,000 through the LFCCEducational Foundation Inc. to establish theWilliam A. Hazel Family Endowed Scholarship, which annually supports full- and part-time LFCCstudents who live in Fauquier County.“Education is the basic foundation of everything,” said Hazel, who supported his five childrenthrough college. “Community colleges play a critical part in the educational system.”Hazel recognizes that four-year colleges and universities are bursting at the seams and are sometimesdifficult for students to gain acceptance to and afford with rising tuition costs. “The communitycolleges need to expand in order to give everyone the opportunity to receive an education at areasonable cost,” Hazel said. “Lord Fairfax means a great deal to the community, because it meetsthis goal.”3

Foundation Highlights3.Mr. William B. Holtzman contributed 25,000 toward the LFCC GeneralSupport Fund, which supports a variety of initiatives, including employee professionaldevelopment and facility improvements. For William Holtzman, contributing to LFCC madeperfect sense.“We make our money off the people who live here. I’m afirm believer you have to give back to the community youlive and work in,” he said.Holtzman always knew he wanted to live in theShenandoah Valley. Even as a youth, when his friendsand classmates couldn’t wait to escape to the big cities,he said he knew he was already where he belonged. That’swhy, after earning his bachelor’s of science degree inhorticulture from Virginia Tech in 1959 and his master’sof science degree from Cornell in 1961, he returned toMount Jackson, Va.After working in the local apple industry for 11 years,he decided the time was right to open his own business. In 1972, Holtzman Corp. opened its doors.Today, that start-up business has grown to include Holtzman Oil Corp., Holtzman Propane, ValleyIce, six Burger Kings and two Denny’s restaurants. Holtzman Corp. owns or supplies fuel to over 100service stations and convenience stores in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.Holtzman has a tremendous commitment to education that has presented itself through his manyand various acts of generosity over the years. In 2005, he was on hand to witness the dedication ofthe Holtzman Alumni Center at Virginia Tech (VT). Named after him, the Center will house theactivities and operations of VT’s Alumni Association. His educational philanthropy was continuedrecently with his four-year donor commitment to LFCC.“I gave to LFCC, because it offers students from our area education and opportunities and preparesthem to be successful,” he said.Because he believes the school itself can best determine what needs are best addressed withcontributions, Holtzman decided not to earmark his donation for a specific program.“Schools need discretionary funds. Hopefully, this way, LFCC can use the money for whateverprograms will best benefit our area’s students,” he said.Holtzman encourages students to always strive to do the best job possible in every aspect of theirlives. “Never do anything halfway. If you’re going to do it, do it right. It’s so important that we instillin our youth a sense of pride in a job well done,” he said. This belief is obviously something he has encouraged in his own children. His son followed him into4

Foundation Highlightsthe family business and now heads up his propane and ice companies. His daughter, Jill HoltzmanVogel, was elected in 2007 to the Virginia State Senate. He also has two stepchildren – one is aphysician’s assistant in Richmond and the other is studying to be a paralegal. It is evident that Holtzman has utilized his education and dedication to become successful. However, even with all of his accomplishments, Holtzman remains humble.“I simply consider myself very lucky to be able to live where I want to live and be successful in abusiness that I love,” he said.4.The Bromfield Family contributed 50,111 toward the Edward T. BromfieldJr. Endowed Scholarship Fund.Established in 2008, the Edward T. Bromfield Jr.Endowed Scholarship at LFCC will be awardedannually to a Warren County resident seeking furthereducation to enhance practical and intellectualpursuits. While editor/publisher of Front Royal’s WarrenSentinel, Mr. Bromfield was an early and vigorous proponent of providing higher educationopportunities closer to home. When the Virginia Community College System was approved, he wasappointed to the site selection committee that chose Middletown as the future location of LFCC.(In the photograph, Mr. Bromfield is at right with Dr. William H. McCoy, LFCC’s first president.)He later served on the College Board from 1975 until 1983, representing Warren County. Mr.Bromfield died in 1998.Elaine Bromfield is very happy to have this scholarship in her husband’s name, recalling his devotionto LFCC and its expanding growth and reach.“He felt education to be a critical gift for all, young and old. I hope the scholarship benefits those inWarren County seeking help or needing change,” she said.5. Mr. George L. Sekel contributed 15,000 to name a room in a Collegebuilding. The funds will be used to ensurethat LFCC students are provided with acomfortable environment that is conduciveto learning.Mr. Sekel worked as a diplomat for nearly 30 years. Hislate wife, Dolores, took art classes at LFCC, whichshe thought would be therapeutic for her rheumatoidarthritis. It was there that Mrs. Sekel realized that she5

Foundation Highlightshad a talent, and her hobby turned into a career. Mrs. Sekel created realistic renderings in a variety ofmediums, including oil, watercolor, charcoal and pastel. The Foundation is selling many of her original works for 100 each, with 100 percent of the proceedshelping to establish a scholarship fund for LFCC art students. KrouseScholarship Endowment. The endowment was established by the Woodstock RotaryClub in June 2005 in memory of Marlin P. Krouse. As a resultof the endowment, the Woodstock Rotary Club established theWoodstock Rotary Club Marlin P. Krouse Scholarship Fund at theCollege, which is awarded to Shenandoah County residents whoattend LFCC.“LFCC provided the perfect means to carry out the desires ofMarlin P. Krouse by providing scholarship funding for deservingShenandoah County students who want to continue their education beyond the secondary level,”said Larry L. Helsley, a Woodstock Rotary Club member and LFCC Board member. “Presently, approximately 50 percent of Shenandoah County students who pursue higher education do so atLFCC.”“Mr. Krouse was aware of the fact that the Woodstock Rotary Club had been giving scholarships todeserving students for much of the club’s 80-year history,” said Maryellen Ruddy, a Rotary member. The Krouse endowment of nearly 200,000 has given the club the opportunity to offer scholarshipsto more deserving students.”Krouse was a Fort Valley resident, teacher, naturalist, artist and actor. He was born in Pennsylvaniaand earned a bachelor’s degree from Hartford Seminary. He later graduated with master’s degreesfrom Susquehanna University and Penn State. In the late 1990s, Krouse demonstrated his great loveand generosity for his community by leaving a portion of his estate to the Woodstock Rotary Clubfor annual scholarships for students.6
