NUMBER 29COMMITTEE UPDATES, continuedJan Kochis, RDPublic PolicyCDA Licensure ChairPUBLIC POLICY/LICENSURE UPDATEJAN 2011The Public Policy Team has been hard at work with our lobbyist, Mendez Consulting. We havecompleted drafting our licensure bill which was introduced on Thursday, January 11, 2012, to thelegislature. It is HB12-1060 Concerning Regulation of Dietitians. On February 6 th the bill was heard inthe House Agriculture Committee. Several dietitians testified in favor of the bill and did a great job. There was a lot of opposition to the bill, some of which was unexpected. The vote was not in favor ofour bill, which means that the licensure bill will not go forward in the House this year. Many of youhave been contacted by your District Legislative Captains for your respective Senate or House district. We appreciate all the hard work that the district leaders have done in our licensure efforts this year.We are not finished! We still are committed to licensure in Colorado. We want to keep thegrassroots structure with the district leaders in place. We need more district leaders in districts thatdo not have one. The Public Policy Team is in the process of determining our next steps. Watch theCDA webpage for updates. Our 2nd annual Lobby Day is coming up soon. It will be March 1, 2012, at the same location as lastyear—The First Baptist Church in Denver. It is right across from the State Capitol building. Plan tocome and learn more about state and federal legislation including licensure and to meet with ourlegislators. The registration form is available on the CDA webpage. Click on “Lobby Day” onthe front page of the website to register. We will be inviting our legislators to join us for lunch.Rosanne Ainscough, RD, CDE

Page 12COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHTLIV. NUMBER 29Teaching Our Kids to Eat Well at SchoolSchool Cafeterias are Our Ally in the Fight against ObesityBy Maren Stewart, LiveWell Colorado President and CEOToday’s generation of American children may be the first in two centuries to have shorter lifeexpectancies than their parents. While there are many reasons, childhood obesity – and its alarmingrate of increase throughout the US – may be the most devastating one.Childhood obesity is of particular concern in Colorado. Though the state continues to be designatedas the nation’s leanest for adults, more than half are obese or overweight, and our children are faringeven worse. The most recent data indicate that one quarter of our children are overweight or obese. Infact, Colorado has the second- fastest growing childhood obesity rate in the country, recentlydropping from third leanest to 23rd in the country over a matter of a few years.Obesity is complex problem belonging to us all, and solutions won’t come easy. For example, schoolsin particular face difficulties providing healthy meals for children. Experiencing dwindling resources, school districts often are challenged to feed a large student population with little funding. Servingfood that is affordable, nutritious, and appealing to students can become a difficult undertaking. In Colorado, nearly 400,000 children participate in the national lunch program, with upwards of 40percent qualifying for free or reduced lunch. For many of these students, school-provided mealsrepresent the only source of balanced nutrition they will receive during the day. If we can supportschool cafeterias as resources that not only provide nutritious, tasty meals but also expand ourchildren’s appreciation for them, we can build healthy habits that will last a lifetime. To lead this school food renaissance, LiveWell Colorado, a nonprofit committed to reducing obesityby promoting healthy eating and active living, has developed a nine-week healthy cookingcompetition for Denver Public Schools high school students. Students who participate inEatWell@School take on the challenge of preparing healthy school meals while learning cooking andnutrition skills that can be shared with their families and have long-lasting positive effects.

Page 13COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT, continuedLIV. NUMBER 29Teaching Our Kids to Eat Well at School, continuedLed by Johnson & Wales University volunteer chef mentors, students from Manual High School, BruceRandolph High School, KIPP Denver Collegiate High School, and Martin Luther King Jr. Early Collegerecently learned how to prepare a healthy and delicious school lunch. These student teams competedto prepare menus that align with the standards for public school lunches, including meeting orexceeding USDA nutrition guidelines, and staying within budgets of less than a dollar a meal. This initiative is one of several strategies LiveWell Colorado leads to achieve our vision of everystudent having access to and choosing healthy food at school. Our two-prong approach focuses onsupply and demand – making policy and environmental changes to improve school foodenvironments, and educating and encouraging students to make healthy choices. Our school culinarytraining programs have empowered nutrition staff in 64 Colorado school districts to prepare deliciousschool meals from scratch. Our Go, Slow, Whoa program, which launched in Aurora Public Schoolsand recently expanded to the Cherry Creek School District, is helping students in 18 elementaryschools learn to identify healthy food choices. Our focus on improving schools’ access to healthy foodshas led to the development of a Farm to School Primer and the statutory creation of Colorado’s firstFood Systems Advisory Council appointed by the Governor. The EatWell@School competition culminated at LiveWell Colorado’s second annual fundraisingluncheon on December 8, 2011, where the participating teams were recognized and Manual HighSchool’s winning meal was served to the nearly 600 attendees. Proceeds from the luncheon will helpLiveWell Colorado lead the development and implementation of initiatives promoting healthy eatingand active living to reduce obesity in Colorado. For more information on EatWell@School and ourother initiatives, please visit livewellcolorado.org.By providing schools with the resources to serve healthier food to Colorado’s kids and by teachingchildren how to make healthier choices, we can create a future in which our children will thrive.
