Marketing & PRIf you are interested in wearing the new CAND logo, you can purchase one for 20 here.5 Marketing Tips for Registered DietitiansWhether you are in a small private practice or in charge of marketing for a large company, these five things could help yourcompany thrive.1. Find your ideal client or target audience.Effective marketing starts with finding out who you are talking to. Think about your favorite client or those who often frequent yourfacility. Are you offering appropriate services geared towards your target audience? Where do you find them? Maybe it’s on socialmedia or at a physician’s office. Maybe your target audience frequents the gym?Take Action: Sit down with a pen and paper and identify your ideal client or target audience and how you can reach them.2. Always have business cards on hand. You never know who you might meet at a conference or your spouse’s company picnic. Be prepared with business cards to give outin case the opportunity arises which can lead to referrals.Take action: Don’t have business cards printed? Check out a few online options such as VistaPrint or Moo.Refresh your website.3. Think of your business’s website as the first impression. Is your website user friendly? Does it speak to your target audience? Arethere any unsightly errors? Do you make it easy for clients to reach you?7

Marketing & PR (continued)Take action: Take a few minutes to critique your website from an outsider's point of view (or have a friend do it for you).Review competitor’s websites for ideas. Make a list of what needs updated.Ask current and past clients for reviews.4. These days it’s all about the reviews. The more 5-star reviews you have, the more likely a client will come to you forservices. It’s not always at the top of a client or customer’s mind to leave a review when they’ve had a good experience. So besure to ask for one.Take action: Reach out to past clients for a review or create a system to ask future customers.5. Create a blog or write content for social media.Get your clients and customers interested in what you have to offer by creating content. This can be through a blog orthrough your social media pages. By focusing on a specific topic, this showcases you as the expert and people are more likelyto come to you.Take action: Make a timeline of nutrition topics for your blog and/or social media. How do you want your customers/clientsto see you as the expert?Carrie Weitzel, RD &Sarah Kinney, MBA, RDN, SNSMarketing/PR ChairsEatright Colorado@EatrightColoeatrightcolorado8

Colorado AffiliateDelegate MessageDear Colorado AND,Last week was the 105th House of Delegates (HOD) annual meeting. This year it was virtual, not surprisingly. The issuefor discussion was ‘A Systems Approach to Accelerating Nutrition and Health Equity.’ In fact, the entire 2020-21 yearwill be dedicated to nutrition and health equity. We spent day one hearing from the Academy’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair, Mary Lee Chin, MS, RDN, alocal Colorado nutrition professional. She explained that Academy members have been loud and clear that inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) need to be addressed in our profession. From there we discussed cultural humilityand how to accelerate nutrition equity in all practice areas. The goal from day one was to begin work developing a setof guiding principles for an Academy cultural humility tool.Day two was spent creating a list of reasonable actions and tools members can take/use to address nutrition andhealth disparities. These discussions took some interesting twists and turns, with two main themes – 1) recruiting andmaintaining minority dietitians is vital and 2) improving health and nutrition equity in our communities requires moreattention. In order to address these two themes a few things resonated with me. First, cultural humility is a continuousprocess and one which requires us to engage our communities in order to build trust for true change to occur. Second, policy ultimately drives choice and the change we want to see. We need, now more than ever, to support nutritionrelated legislation in order to truly affect nutrition-related health outcomes. Third, research is going to inform ourpolicy! We need good research to examine the impact of programs and policies that target social determinants ofhealth. At the end of the meeting, the speaker of the HOD ended with a reminder of what the Academy’s vision: a worldwhere all people thrive through the transformative power of food and nutrition. Based on this year’s Fall meeting, it isclear the Academy remains committed to this vision, not only for our communities but for our current and futurecolleagues. If you have a passion for nutrition and health equity, D&I, IDEA – however you want to put it – please reach out to meand/or our Colorado AND D&I committee. There are ways to be involved at the advocacy (communications), grassroots(policy), and research levels. If you have thoughts, comments, questions, or concerns, I want to hear from you! I can bereached at Alexandra.wilsonrdncde@gmail.com. You can influence where the Academy leadership puts their focus andfunding but they need to hear from you in order for you to have that influence. All the best this upcoming fall and end of 2020.Alexandra Wilson, MS, RDN, CDE9
