Pressure/ TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTIONVaisala BAROCAP Sensor for MeasuringPressureFirst introduced in 1985, Vaisala BAROCAP is a silicon-based micromechanical pressure sensorthat offers reliable performance in a wide variety of applications, from meteorology to industrialmeasurements. Combining two powerful technologies – single-crystal silicon material andcapacitive measurement – BAROCAP sensors feature low hysteresis combined with excellentaccuracy and long-term stability.How It WorksBAROCAP is a micromechanicalsensor that uses dimensional changesin its silicon membrane to measurepressure. As the surroundingpressure increases or decreases, themembrane bends, thereby increasingor decreasing the height of thevacuum gap inside the sensor. Theopposite sides of the vacuum gap actas electrodes, and as the distancebetween the two electrodes changes,the sensor capacitance changes.The capacitance is measured andconverted into a pressure reading.The BAROCAP sensor’s properties– good elasticity, low hysteresis,excellent repeatability, lowtemperature dependence, andsuperior long-term stability – arethe result of its single-crystal siliconmaterial. Versatile Outputs andData CollectionThe PTU300 comes with a standardRS232 serial interface. The output formatis compatible with major GPS receiversand NMEA-coded messages. An isolatedRS485 is available as an option.The PTU300 is also capable of applyingthe MODBUS communication protocoland, together with an appropriateconnection option, provides eitherMODBUS RTU (RS485) or MODBUSTCP/IP (Ethernet) communication.The data logger, with real-time clockand battery backup, guaranteesreliable logging of measurement datafor over four years.
