Keepcharging, 521!Track 2Growing the Union:Clinica de Salud del Valle deSalinas Joins SEIU familyThis year, 150 workers at health care provider Clinica deSalud del Valle de Salinas came together and fought for aunion voice by choosing to join our SEIU Local 521 family.Clinica de Salud workers provide health care services inMonterey County, with an emphasis on services for farmworker families and the agricultural community. Our newmembers include medical assistants, dental assistants,and medical records clerks who are now nego*a*ng theirfirst contract.During the campaign, Clinica workers receivedoverwhelming support from the community. Track 3Huge political victories!Members won huge victories in 2012 by dedica*ng massiveresources to win key poli*cal races and issues affec*ng workingfamilies. We faced well-funded opposi*on in races up and downthe state from school boards to Congress and ballot measures ofall sizes. We responded by ge?ng to work, taking to the phonesand hi?ng the streets. Na*onwide, 100,000 SEIU members made13 million phone calls and knocked on 5 million doors. Track 4Protecting Retirement SecurityThis year “Re rement Security for All” transformed from aslogan to a movement.521 Pension Commi ee members were integral in thefight on two landmark pieces of re*rement legisla*on:the Californian Secure Re*rement Savings Plan (SB 1234)and the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act (PEPRA).SB 1234 is a first-in-the-na*on state re*rement plan forprivate sector workers, empowering all Californians toprepare for the future and raising the quality of life foreveryone.The Pension Reform plan started out as a terrible bill forworking families and SEIU members statewide organizedagainst the worst provisions. Ul*mately, we defeatedefforts that would have put our re*rement security in thehands of big banks and corpora*ons.Track 5Protecting health careMembers joined Sen. Kevin DeLeon (center) in Sacramento last August tosupport retirement security bill SB1234.Along with pension reform and re*rement security, ourthird campaign goal is to have our re*rement fundsinvested wisely. AOer successfully lobbying CalPERS toearmark 800 million for investments in Californiainfrastructure, we called on the agency to stop doingbusiness with corpora*ons like WellPoint that use ourhealthcare dollars to advance an*-worker poli*calagendas.With that decision came the tremendous challenge ofpreparing for health care reform, and SEIU 521 membersrolled up their sleeves to begin the hard work. Eligibility Workers from Fresno, Kern, Monterey, andSanta Clara coun*es formed an Industry Council andlobbied legislators in Sacramento, ensuring that localcounty workers – not private call centers – will handlethe influx of new enrollees to Medi-Cal and subsidizedfederal health insurance. Home Care workers protected and strengthenedhome care in California by preven*ng any more cutsto IHSS services. SEIU 521 Vice President Carmen Morales washonored at the White House with a “Champions ofChange” award, which recognized the collec*ve effortof 521’s team of nurses that included: Regina Kane,Sharon Ingram, Abigail Romo, Elaine Anthony andJeff Rockholt. Na*vidad Medical Center workers protected theirsafety-net services by helping to pass Assembly Bill276 - The Central Coast Hospital Authority Act - whichopens the way for NMC to form a public authoritywith another health care agency, if and when the*me is right, and remain a leading health careprovider for Monterey County families.2012 was a landmark year for health care, with the U.S.Supreme Court upholding the Affordable Care Act of2010, allowing 30 million Americans without health careto gain coverage.Eligibility Workers from Fresno, Kern, Monterey, and Santa Clara countiestraveled to Sacramento in June to support services reshaped under health carereform.4SEIU Local 521 – 2012 Greatest Hits

Track 6Members in the mediaAcross Local 521, our members took our message to the press and the public in support of jus*ce for all workingfamilies. Track 8Fighting for workers’ rights2012 was a strong year for SEIU 521 members upholdingworkers’ rights.With the assistance of our 521 Contract EnforcementDepartment, union stewards opened almost 800 cases andfought back against unfair disciplines, wrongfultermina*ons, and workplace grievances.As a result, we won hundreds of grievances and wrongfuldisciplines totaling 1.7 million in se lements.Need to file a grievance? They willcoordinate with our Contract Enforcement Department.Monterey County members fought hard to win back-pay after a faulty payrollsystem miscalculated overtime wages for 13 months.Track 9Defending our voiceThere were many a empts this year to silence the voicesof working families, but instead of yielding, SEIU 521members grabbed their bullhorns.When San Benito County infringed on workers’ free speechrights by wrongfully curbing their poli*cal ac*vi*es,members challenged the county in court and won a civilrights lawsuit in September. Shortly aOer the workers’victory, the county administra*ve officer filed hisresigna*on.“This is a win for civil rights and freedom of speech. But SEIU 521 members alsoheld our elected leaders accountable to taxpayers this year.In Soledad, city officials laid off three workers, then sought to give themselves a heOy 16.6% pay raise. Our membersdidn’t accept that. Along with union brothers and sisters from the Police Officers’ Associa*on, members crowded thecity council chambers and ques*oned this self-serving proposal. Track 11Regaining Bargaining PowerHaving a union contract and par*cipa*ng innego*a*ons is a cornerstone of our union. All SEIU 521members have the right to elect their bargaining teamand vote on their contract.In 2012, our union regained its power at the bargainingtable aOer constant a acks on workers the previousyear.In the Central Valley, we saw Stanislaus and Tularecoun*es sign good contracts. Tulare also won areinstatement of wages. In Kings County, memberswon a ruling against the Board of Supervisors whichtried to alter our union contract without nego*a*ons,and Fresno County members forced the county back tothe table with a three-day strike in January.Setting the tone: Fresno County workers inspired members across the region torise up this year through their courageous strike in January.In the Bay Area, San Mateo County won a two-yearcontract extension and the City of San Mateo won afour-year agreement for maintenance workers with 2%increases each year and minimal cost-share increase ofhealth care premiums.For more contract highlights, go to:www.seiu521.org/yir2012.After four years without gains, San Mateo County home care workers won 100more medical insurance slots, fought off cuts to bus passes, and won otherbenefits this year.Track 12Fighting for jobsVarious chapters across our 521 region were successful inprotec*ng jobs and services amid budget cuts.Standing up for each other: Monterey County workers took a public standagainst bullying in the workplace in September when their union brother waswrongfully terminated by the county Treasurer-Tax Collector.SEIU Local 521 – 2012 Greatest HitsIn Santa Cruz County, nearly 200 Salud Para La Genteworkers and community members protected vital servicesby filling the board of directors mee*ng and successfullyhal*ng layoffs of front line workers.Salud Para La Gente workers and supporters saved services with a candlelightvigil and board action in November.7
