GENERAL INFORMATIONHistoryIn 1968, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized theestablishment of Floyd Junior College in Floyd County as a two-year unit of theUniversity System of Georgia to serve students from Northwest Georgia andNortheast Alabama. Under the board’s policy, the local community wouldprovide a campus site and funds for the construction of the initial facilities. Ledby the junior college committee headed by Rome attorney J.D. Maddox, FloydCounty citizens responded enthusiastically by approving a 3.2 million bond issueby a margin of nearly three to one. Construction began in early 1970. Thecollege’s first classes were offered during the fall quarter of 1970 in temporaryfacilities, but by the end of 1970 all operations were moved to the CedartownHighway campus.Dr. David B. McCorkle became the first president of Floyd Junior College onJanuary 1, 1970, and served in that position until June 30, 1991. In recognition ofhis long and distinguished service to Floyd College and the community, the Boardof Regents named him president emeritus, effective January 1, 1992. FollowingDr. McCorkle’s retirement, Dr. Richard Trimble was appointed acting presidentand served until the November 1992 selection of Dr. H. Lynn Cundiff as thecollege’s second president. Dr. Cundiff served as president until August 2000.Rob Watts was named interim president by the Chancellor of the UniversitySystem. Mr. Watts led the college until June 2001, when Dr. J. Randolph Piercetook office. Dr. Pierce retired at the end of December 2011. Rob Watts againserved very briefly as interim president until he was called to another institutionto serve in that capacity. Dr. Renva Watterson, vice president for academic andstudent affairs, was named interim president in May 2012.In 1994, the institution continued its expansion and outreach by acquiring the EastRome Junior High School facility in downtown Rome. The college began offeringclasses in the building (now called James D. Maddox Heritage Hall) beginningwinter 1995. The campus also houses GHTV, the college’s television station. In August 2005, Floyd College changed its name to Georgia Highlands College toreflect more accurately its growing service area outside of Floyd County.
