This is HEC Paris1881 - 2011130 yearsMuch has changed since 1881 when the Paris Chamber of Commerce andIndustry created a school to train 57 young men to assume leadership positionsin society. HEC Paris mission and values1881, first class at HEC Paris, rue de TocquevilleHEC Paris, founded in 1881 by the ParisChamber of Commerce and Industry(the “CCIP”), is one of France’s oldestelite higher education Grandes Ecoles.Unique to France, the concept wasintroduced by Napoleon so that “thebest and the brightest” could bechanneled into his armies andengineering corps. Unlike French publicuniversities which are required toaccept all candidates from the sameregion who hold a baccalauréat, theselection criteria for the Grandes Ecolesrest mainly on competitive written andoral exams, taken by students fromdedicated preparatory classes.Throughout its 130-year history, HECParis has continually attractedindividuals highly capable and talented, innovative and entrepreneurial, ambitious and open minded.4HEC Paris has consistently developed awide and unique range of programs forthe 20-year-old student to theinternational senior executive in Franceand across the world.HEC Paris’ mission is to shape theglobal leaders of tomorrow, capable ofbecoming architects of a responsibleworld. This mission is based on twopillars: a rigorous researchenvironment and close connections tothe corporate world. The combination ofhigh quality research, underlying thepedagogical innovation at HEC Paris, and close corporate connections, givesthe HEC community the necessary toolsand background to challengeestablished rules and to invent the newsocial and economic paradigms oftomorrow’s world, rather than simplyreproduce them.HEC Paris enacts this mission inharmony with three core values:❯ Excellence as an objective in all thatwe undertake❯ The value of knowledge as a vehicleto fight sectarianism and ideology❯ The importance of participating asa major player in the constructionof a responsible worldThese values are the foundation of aconviction shared by the HECCommunity: knowledge determines thefreedom and entrepreneurship requiredfor a better world. This conviction isaffirmed with our motto “The more youknow, the more you dare”.

The Paris Chamber of Commerce and IndustryHEC Paris is affiliated to the CCIP, theleading Chamber of Commerce andIndustry in France and Europe. Thispublic establishment is run by 84elected representatives, all of whom arebusiness leaders. Its missions include:❯ Representing business interests tolocal, national and European publicauthorities❯ Advising companies at each stage oftheir development❯ Training: each year the CCIP provides14,500 young people with initialtraining and more than 30,000 adultswith in service training, within its11 schools❯ Developing excellence in the field oftrade shows, conventions andexhibitionsThe CCIP now represents 400,000companies located in the four districtsof Paris center, Hauts-de-Seine, SeineSaint-Denis and Val-de-MarnePierre-Antoine Gailly,PresidentJean-Paul Vermes,First Vice PresidentThe Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Avenue de Friedland, ParisParisTechParisTech is a research and highereducation consortium that bringstogether 12 of France’s mostprestigious Grandes Ecoles(Engineering and Business schools):each institution is recognized as aleader in France in its field.HEC Paris has been a founding memberof ParisTech since 2008.ParisTech’s ambition is to:❯ Create a full service science, technology and managementuniversity ranked among the world’stop 20 education and researchuniversities by 2020❯ Develop the excellence of its researchand give ParisTech leadinginternational visibility andattractiveness❯ Develop its innovation potential bystrengthening its already close tieswith the business world❯ Place itself at the centre of the“knowledge triangle” (education –research – innovation) in partnershipwith the business and institutionalcommunities along with majorresearch organisations5
