Here’stoYour Health4 heart health questions every woman shouldask at her next Ob-Gyn visitYour next ob-gyn appointment may seemlike an odd time to discuss your heart, butit could save your life (especially if you, likemany women, see an ob-gyn instead of a primarycare physician for your annual exam). In fact, it’sso important that the American Heart Association(AHA) and the American College of Obstetricians andGynecologists (ACOG) just came out with an officialadvisory that urges all doctors who care for womento talk about heart health starting now.It makes sense: Your visit provides a perfectchance to learn your heart numbers, as your ob-gyncan check your blood pressure, order blood work, and more. And women who have had childrenmay have an increased risk of heart issues, sincepregnancy is like a stress test for your heart. Highmaternal blood pressure, preeclampsia, gestationaldiabetes, and premature birth are all associated withheart problems later in life.If your doctor doesn’t bring up your heart, youabsolutely should. Here’s what to talk about at yournext office visit.1. Discuss your stats.Write down any numbers your ob-gyn provides(blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, and blood sugarlevels). Ask if they’re higher than last year’s and, ifso, what you can do. “When men come to the doctor,we often do a better job connecting these numbersto cardiovascular risk than we do with women,” saysJohn Warner, MD, president of the AHA. So if yourdoc doesn’t tell you what these numbers really meanto you, ask.2. Update your current doctor. If you’ve moved since you had children, chat withyour new ob-gyn about your pregnancy history.Sometimes this vital information doesn’t get passedalong.3. Talk about family history.Your ob-gyn will likely ask you about your familyhistory of issues like breast and ovarian cancer, sobe sure to also bring up your family history of heartdisease.4. Ask about a specialist. If your blood pressure is higher than normal, forexample, asking your ob-gyn for a referralto an internist or a cardiologist is agood idea. Why now? When the leaders of AHA and ACOGwere on a panel about women’scardiovascular health, organizedby Woman’s Day in late 2017, it gotthem wondering how they could worktogether to raise awareness of thisimportant issue. Less than ayear later, they released thisnew advisory aimed atencouraging womento talk about theirheart more with theirdoctor.David B.
