8C apella U n i ve r s i t y1.888.CAPELLA Volume 09–10, No. 1About Capella UniversityUniversity Mission StatementThe mission of Capella University is to extend access tohigh quality bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and certificateprograms for adults who seek to maximize their personaland professional potential. This mission is fulfilled throughinnovative programs that are responsive to the needs of adultlearners and involve active, engaging, challenging, and relevantlearning experiences offered in a variety of delivery modes.Educational PhilosophyCapella University’s educational philosophy focuses ondeveloping scholar-practitioners through learning thatincorporates both theoretical knowledge and relevantexperience. Learners synthesize scholarship with practicalapplication appropriate to their level—as reflectivepractitioners at the baccalaureate level, as practitionerscholars at the master’s level, and as scholar-practitioners atthe doctoral level. Capella University faculty are themselvesscholar-practitioners or as appropriate, practitioner-scholars.They guide and facilitate learner development throughdissemination of knowledge and the formation of learningcommunities. They promote active learning, and they modelwhat it means to be scholar-practitioners and life-long learners.Capella’s philosophy also emphasizes collaboration: learnerswith their peers and learners with faculty. Learners andfaculty reflect together on their experiences, build and applyknowledge, participate in communities of learning, and maketheoretical and practical contributions in their fields.University HistoryIn 1992, Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation, provided the vision, leadership, and a portion of theinitial funding for the incorporation of a distance-learninginstitution. Mr. Shank observed that adults were underservedby traditional universities for several reasons. Mostsignificantly, attending classes is difficult or impossible forworking adults due to employment and family obligations, and traditional curriculum often does not correspond with theprofessional goals of mature adults. He envisioned a barrierfree university that people could attend from remote locationssuch as their homes.Capella University, initially named The Graduate Schoolof America (TGSA), offered master’s and doctoral degreeprograms in Education, Human Services, and Organizationand Management. Two years after accreditation, TGSA becameCapella University and went on to establish the schoolsof Business, Education, Human Services, Psychology, andTechnology. Today, Capella University offers certificates andbachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees across itssix schools. The undergraduate learning experience was enhanced bya reorganization of schools in 2004 to form the School ofUndergraduate Studies and the School of Business andTechnology in addition to the existing schools of Education,Human Services, and the Harold Abel School of Psychology. In 2009, to better meet the professional needs of its learnersin public service fields, Capella formed a sixth school—theSchool of Public Service Leadership. In 1993, Dr. Harold Abel, an experienced leader in highereducation and a former president of three universities, joinedMr. Shank to serve as founding president and academicleader of Capella. Dr. Abel assembled a premier faculty, built graduate curricula, and guided the university towardacademic accreditation. In 1997, during the presidency of Dr.Bruce Francis, Capella achieved accreditation by The HigherLearning Commission (HLC) and became a member of theNorth Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2001, Dr. Michael Offerman, formerly a leader within theUniversity of Wisconsin system, became president of CapellaUniversity. A major milestone achieved during his presidencyoccurred in 2003, when The Higher Learning Commission(HLC) of the North Central Association granted Capellapermission to offer a full four-year bachelor’s program. In2008, Capella’s accreditation was reaffirmed by HLC. Capella’snext accreditation reaffirmation process is scheduled for the2014–2015 academic year.In addition to its institutional accreditation with The HigherLearning Commission (HLC), Capella University hasattained specialized program accreditations for several of itsspecializations. In 2003, Capella University’s Mental HealthCounseling specialization received program accreditationfrom the American Counseling Association’s Council forAccreditation of Counseling and Related EducationalPrograms (CACREP), and in 2005, Capella’s Marital,Couple, and Family Counseling/Therapy specialization alsoreceived CACREP accreditation.
