This mission is fulfilled throughinnovative programs that are responsive to the needs of adultlearners and involve active, engaging, challenging, and relevantlearning experiences offered in a variety of delivery modes.Educational PhilosophyCapella University’s educational philosophy focuses ondeveloping scholar-practitioners through learning thatincorporates both theoretical knowledge and relevantexperience. Learners synthesize scholarship with practicalapplication appropriate to their level—as reflectivepractitioners at the baccalaureate level, as practitionerscholars at the master’s level, and as scholar-practitioners atthe doctoral level. Capella University faculty are themselvesscholar-practitioners or as appropriate, practitioner-scholars.They guide and facilitate learner development throughdissemination of knowledge and the formation of learningcommunities. They promote active learning, and they modelwhat it means to be scholar-practitioners and life-long learners.Capella’s philosophy also emphasizes collaboration: learnerswith their peers and learners with faculty. Learners andfaculty reflect together on their experiences, build and applyknowledge, participate in communities of learning, and maketheoretical and practical contributions in their fields.University HistoryIn 1992, Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation,provided the vision, leadership, and a portion of theinitial funding for the incorporation of a distance-learninginstitution. Mr. Shank observed that adults were underservedby traditional universities for several reasons. Mostsignificantly, attending classes is difficult or impossible forworking adults due to employment and family obligations,and traditional curriculum often does not correspond with theprofessional goals of mature adults. He envisioned a barrierfree university that people
