We are here to recognize the significantaccomplishments of our graduates. Your academic achievements,determination, and commitment have brought you to this point. As youwalk across the stage, you are earning more than the titles bestowed byyour degrees and certificates. The skills you have gained also grant you newresponsibilities to your family, your community, and yourself. You have theknowledge and the ability to make your corner of the world a better place.Today, you join more than 25,000 Capella graduates who have gone beforeyou. Many more will follow. As you move forward with your life and career,the support of Capella University remains with you. commencement 2011Minneapolis, mnCommencement Speaker—Bill GeorgeGrand Marshal—Harry McLenighan, EdDBill George is a professor of management practice at Harvard BusinessHarry McLenighan is currently a faculty member in Capella University’sSchool and is the author of four best-selling books on leadership. He isthe former chairman and chief executive of Medtronic; has worked as anexecutive with Honeywell and Litton Industries; and served with the U.S.Department of Defense.School of Education. He is also founder and chief executive officer ofMinnesota Principal Assessment Services (MPAS), an organization dedicatedto the ongoing professional development of Minnesota principals. He is alicensed teacher, principal, and superintendent with extensive teaching andadministrative experience.Mr. George served as a board member and trustee of many organizations,Dr. McLenighan joined Capella in 2003. Since then, he has served asincluding Novartis; Target Corporation; the Carnegie Endowment forAssociate Dean, Dean, and Faculty Chair for the EdD in Leadership andInternational Peace; World Economic Forum USA; the Guthrie Theater;Management specialization, which he helped create. He earned his BS fromAllina Health System; Abbott-Northwestern Hospital; United Way of thethe University of Minnesota; and his MS and EdD from the University of St.Greater Twin Cities; and Advamed. He has been named one of the “TopThomas.25 Business Leaders of the Past 25 Years” by PBS; “Executive of the Year–2001” by the Academy of Management; and “Director of the Year 2001–2002” by the National Association of Corporate Directors.Reader—J. Bruce Francis, PhDBruce Francis currently serves as Distinguished Senior Faculty at CapellaMr. George earned his BSIE with high honors from Georgia Tech; hisUniversity. He has also been a consultant-evaluator for the Higher LearningMBA from Harvard University, where he was a Baker Scholar; and receivedCommission of the North Central Association and a trainer and facilitatorhonorary PhDs from Georgia Tech and Bryant University.in North Central’s Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). He hasmore than 37 years experience as a faculty member, administrator, andresearcher.In 1995, Dr. Francis was the first board member of The Graduate School ofAmerica—which became Capella University—and later served as Presidentand Chancellor. He now teaches in Capella’s School of Education, includingin the Doctor of Education programs, which he helped design. Dr. Francisearned his MA from the University of Detroit and his PhD from the Universityof Michigan.

Each year since 1999, recipients have beenchosen for their outstanding contributions to our academic community.School of Business and TechnologyJanet Salmons, PhDDr. Salmons joined Capella in 1999. She was nominated for her innovativeapproach to teaching and learning and her dedication to her students,mentees, and fellow faculty members. She has been a conceptual leaderand expert in developing key approaches for using web conferencingthroughout the university, which has enhanced the Capella experience forstudents and faculty.Dr. Salmons earned her MA from Empire State College and her PhD at theUnion Institute and University.School of Public Service LeadershipJohn Darland, PsyDDr. Darland joined Capella in 2001. He was nominated because of hisleadership as an expert on research in human services, support forenhancement of programs, and participation on University committees.He also works closely with doctoral students as a dissertation reviewer andrecently led an initiative to improve student engagement in the School ofPublic Service Leadership.Dr. Darland earned his MPP from the University of Minnesota and his PsyDfrom the University of Houston.Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral SciencesBarry Trunk, PhDDr. Trunk joined Capella in 2003. He was nominated for his incrediblecontributions to the Psychology department as a highly engaged instructorand mentor, as well as a residential colloquia instructor. He has alsocontributed to the field as the co-author of two collegiate textbooks, and iscurrently working on a third.Dr. Trunk earned his MA from California State University, Long Beach; andhis PhD from Ohio State University.School of EducationMelissa McIntyre, PhDDr. McIntyre joined Capella in 2004. She was nominated in recognition ofher outstanding support of the School of Education, including mentorshipof other faculty members, development of courses and residencyexperiences, and review of proposals and dissertations. She also uses avariety of unique methods of facilitating group and individual learning toaddress the unique needs of each student.Dr. McIntyre earned her M.Ed and MA from the University of Phoenix andher PhD from Capella University.School of Undergraduate StudiesDavid Odett, PhDDr. Odett joined Capella in 2006. He was nominated for his dedicationto providing the best learning experience possible by consistentlyimplementing innovative instructional strategies, including improved facultystudent communications, introducing enhanced learning templates forstudents, and managing continuous course improvement.Dr. Odett earned his MBA from the University of Notre Dame, his MA fromCentral Michigan University, and his PhD from Wayne State University.
