Thiscommitment is the foundation for theCapella Way of Learning. The CapellaWay involves the delivery of relevant andpractical knowledge, the use of variedlearning approaches to allow fordifferent learning styles and strengths,inclusion of learners’ knowledge andexperiences in the learning exchange,and limited demands on learners tocome together at the same time andplace. The Capella Way is characterizedby active learning involving teamworkand collaboration, creation of learningcommunities, and the provision ofexcellent learner support services. Thegoal of the Capella Way is to providelearners with knowledge and skills thathave immediate impact, that are anefficient path to improving theirprofessional value, and that lead to anintimate and profound learningexperience.University HistoryIn 1992, Stephen Shank, former CEOof Tonka Corporation, provided thevision, leadership, and a portion of theinitial funding for the incorporation ofa distance-learning institution. Mr. Shankobserved that adults were underservedby traditional universities for severalreasons. Most significantly, attendingclasses is difficult or impossible forworking adults due to employment andfamily obligations, and traditionalcurriculum often does not correspondwith the professional goals of matureadults. He envisioned a barrier-freeuniversity that people could attend fromremote locations — like their ownhomes — at their convenience.In 1993, Dr. Harold Abel, an experiencedleader in higher education and a formerpresident of three universities, joinedMr. Shank to serve as founding presidentand academic leader of Capella. Dr. Abelassembled a premier faculty, builtgraduate curricula, and guided theuniversity toward academic accreditation.In 1997, during the presidency ofDr. Bruce Francis, Capella achievedaccreditation by The Higher LearningCommission and became a member ofthe North Central Association.Capella University, initially named TheGraduate School of America (TGSA),offered master’s and doctoral degreeprograms in management, education,and human services. Two years afteraccreditation, TGSA became CapellaUniversity and within three years hadestablished Schools of Business,Education, Human Services, Psychology,and Technology. Today, CapellaUniversity offers certificates, bachelor’s,master’s, and doctoral degrees acrossfive schools.In 2001, Dr. Michael Offerman, formerlya leader within the University ofWisconsin system, became president ofCapella University. During Dr. Offerman’stenure, Capella has made learner successthe strategic initiative for the universityby emphasizing academic programquality as well as academic advising andlearner support services. www.capella.eduCAPELLA UNIVERSITY7General OverviewAcademic Program OptionsCapella University offers the Bachelorof Science (BS), Master of Science (MS),Master of Business Administration(MBA), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD),and Doctor of Psychology (PsyD).Course FormatsCourses are offered online and indirected study formats. Online coursesare typically twelve weeks in length.Designated directed study courses areavailable only to doctoral learners in theSchools of Business, Education, andHuman Services. Directed study coursesare offered quarterly, and learners workone-on-one with a faculty tutor.Additional details and requirementsrelated to each of these course formatscan be found in the Academic andOther University Policies section of thiscatalog, or on iGuide.Academic ResidenciesAll doctoral programs, clinically-focusedmaster’s programs, and some postmaster’s certificate programs requirelearners to attend academic residencies,either colloquia or year-in-residence,offered in various locations. Colloquiaprovide opportunities for learners tobecome familiar with Capella University’sresources, to learn researchmethodologies, and to prepare fornavigating the comprehensiveexamination and dissertation process.It is through these face-to-face encountersthat learners further participate inCapella’s learning community bynetworking and discussing course work,projects, and research issues with otherlearners and faculty. Capella hopes thatthe sense of community developedduring residential colloquia will endurethroughout the program and become anessential part of a successful learnerexperience. New learners canexpect the following support: Online Orientation. An outstanding FirstCourse that setsthe stage for the rest of the learner’sprogram. Learner Success Lab. Taken inconjunction with their FirstCourse,learners receive the information andguidance they need to be successfuland connect to the Capella community.Learners assess their skills, includingwriting, computer, and timemanagement skills. The results ofthese self evaluations help determinethe most appropriate path for learnersto follow to ensure success.
