President’s MessageA Busy Fallwith Hinman!Robert J. O’DonnellAs I write this note, I am flying home withCheryl and our two daughters Kathleenand Ryan. We’ve just taken off fromKennedy Airport in New York at the endof Thanksgiving weekend. This is the firsttime the four of us have been on our ownfor a major holiday. We spent the past weektouring Ireland together to celebrate our20th wedding anniversary. We spent yesterday in Dublin and had thechance to stop by Trinity College DentalSchool & Hospital. The facility is modernand completely up to date, with state-ofthe-art clinics and pre-clinical simulationlabs. Our tour guide told us that themajority of dental school graduates moveto Australia to practice dentistry becauseof Ireland’s limited job opportunities andstate-controlled fee structures. This issue issomething to think about. After my visit to Denver for the ADA,Cheryl and I both flew to Memphis torepresent Hinman at the University ofTennessee’s 22nd annual Hinman StudentResearch Symposium. We were treated justlike Hinman treats our Featured Cliniciansand we loved it! I had the opportunity tospeak to the 4th year students at UT ina lunch-and-learn format. Later, I spokewith another ninety 2nd, 3rd and 4thyear students from the United States andCanada. The university is so very thankfulfor our sponsorship. We look forward tohosting four dental students in Atlanta forthe March 2017 Meeting. If you shouldcross paths with one of these students, please take some time to get to know themand show them our Hinman southernhospitality. These students will convinceyou that the future of dentistry is bright. Thanks to all who attended Dr. JasonOlitsky’s lecture in November. We hadclose to 300 register for this meeting. I hopeNovember PREVIEW REVIEWhe inspired you to take more photos andpresent more treatment.Special thanks to Dr. Roy McDonald andthe task force on Advertising Guidelines.Roy has spent countless hours working toclarify and rewrite the previously vaguebylaws. Please know that the topic ofethics and advertising has been discussedin the Executive Council for years, and thechanges brought to the general membershipare only in the interest of maintaining highethical standards. All Hinman memberscan advertise on any medium in aninformational way. Thanks to Membership Program ChairDr. Sedgie Newsom for planning our nextmeeting. We will be back at the GeorgiaAquarium for a health and wellness lecture, presented by Dr. Uche Odiatu. Thisprogram should be great for dentists and areal treat for office staff. We hope to seeyou there.Committee assignments and meetings willbe in full swing over the next few weeks. Please make sure you have an assignment, and call the Hinman office if you have anyquestions about your duties and/or whereyou might be needed.Dr. Jane Puskas has a fabulous programplanned for our 105th meeting in March.Eddie Pafford and I have had the pleasure oftraveling with and working alongside Janefor the past three years. Not only will Janebe remembered as Hinman’s first womanGeneral Chairman, but I believe she willbe remembered as one of Hinman’s bestGeneral Chairmen. Congratulations Jane!As we get closer to March, let’s takesome time to show our appreciation tothe Hinman staff. We really do have aspectacular team supporting us! Patrick French becomesan IronmanMember Patrick French completed his first Ironman race on October 22 ofthis year at the Ironman Beach to Battleship race in Wilmington, NC. Itwas a grueling training schedule that he conquered with two of his friends(Team Frothwood), starting at the beginning of January, 2016. He put in800 miles of running, 3,200 miles of biking and 100 miles of swimming overthe training period and felt like the actual race was more of one last “victorylap” celebrating the team’s training, instead of “game day.”The race threw the team a curve ball, as the biking was cut short due toHurricane Matthew that flooded part of the biking course. The race itselfended up being a 2.4 mile swim, 56 mile bike (of which Dr. French believesmother nature made up for the shorter course with a strong head wind forthe first 39 miles) and 26.2 mile run. He finished the race in 8 hours, 28minutes. He has signed up for the Ironman Boulder, Colorado for nextJune, as he wants to complete his goal of the 140.6 mile circuit the Ironmantypically entails. Congratulations!MEMBER NEWSFrank Faunce co-publishes bookMember Frank Faunce, along with Dr. JoeRude, have recently published a fictionalmystery novel based on fact and the realsecret behind the ISIS terrorist movement,“Mystery at the Thirteen Sycamores”.This book is a pulse-pounding suspenseset in our modern world of Jihadistterror and intrigue. Member Blog: Don’t Miss G.O.L.D. 3.0!During November’s ingthe adoption of new bylawslanguage regarding marketing.Having established my practicewhen the Georgia Board ofDentistry limited signage lettersto a maximum size of 2” and the Yellow Pageswas the only form of marketing, I wanted toshare some thoughts 1. Attracting new patients by offering free goodsor discounted services does not build a practice, nor does it attract the quality of patients whowill stay. They will be gone as soon as the next“deal” comes along.2. Many Hinman members established theirpractices long before the days of practice websitesand social media. They did it by becomingintimately involved as volunteers in, and leadersof, their respective communities. Establishinglasting relationships through community servicebuilds one’s brand and one’s practice.3. Internal marketing is always less costly andmore effective than external marketing. Creating“raving fan patients” builds one’s practicethrough the most powerful form of advertising:word of mouth. Providing service excellence anda “remarkable experience” for each patient ofrecord is the key to practice growth!4. The excellent work by the bylaws committeecarefully examined the ADA Code of Ethics,Rules of the Georgia Board of Dentistry, andlanguage from the ACD to draft a bylaw thathelps maintain the high ethical standards ofthe Hinman Dental Society, while providingprofessional guidance to all its members. There is no question that today’s marketplacepresents formidable challenges to our profession. And while the bylaw regarding advertisingadopted during the meeting may not be the finalanswer, clearly it is a step in the right direction,as it is broader and less restrictive than before.I certainly don’t have all the answers for today’syoung practitioners, but there’s one thing I knowfor sure: the Hinman G.O.L.D. program in 2017will provide an invaluable – not to be missed –opportunity to enhance practice success. Myadvice? Be there! – Wayne Kerr, DDS, MAGDPASSED and PROPOSEDBYLAW CHANGESAt the November 7 membershipmeeting, Hinman members voted withoverwhelmingly to approve a new Bylawthat clarified vague language in the previousbylaw regarding practice promotion. Please refer to the November 2016Hinman Preview Review for more detail.Article I, Section 10: “Any member whodoes not adhere to the stipulations ofmembership will be placed on probationfor one meeting year. If the memberfails to adhere to the stipulations ofmembership during the probationaryyear, membership will be revoked.”At our January 19 membership meetingHinman members will vote on a fewbylaw changes that were recommendedbecause of this approved bylaw change. Please review the following proposedbylaw changes (changes are in bold):Article IX: Replace “Only informationaladvertising is appropriate in promotingone’s dental practice and it is inappropriateto use comparable and competitiveadvertising when promoting one’s dentalpractice.” with “A Hinman member shalluse only informational advertising inpromoting his or her dental practice andshall refrain from any use of comparableand competitive advertising.”and“The Executive Council may ationsmakingArticle I, Section 3, para 2: “ membership. The membership chairmanwill investigate the candidate prior topublishing their name in the HinmanPreview Review and prior to presentingthe application to the Executive Councilfor action. The candidate may ”November PREVIEW REVIEWreference to a member or a member’spractice and make suggestions and/or recommendations to members andprospective applicants.”Note: these bylaw changes do notrefer to internal marketing to existingpatients. Please uphold the stipulations ofmembership. The Official Publication of the Hinman Dental Society7
