Imaging TechnologyDigital PET-CT ScanTechnologyas a forcein detectionThe fight against cancer must startwith each of us. A key in this crusade isknowing when to be screened (learn moreon pages 12-13), as well as understandingthe technology that is in our corner fordetection.Memorial is home to a host of imagingtechnologies that provide detailedinformation to assist doctors in thediagnosis and treatment of all typesof cancer. It’s one more weapon in ourarsenal to fight this disease.A PET, or positron emission tomography scan, takespictures of the body at the cellular level and revealshow a patient’s tissues and organs are functioning. This scan can sometimes detect disease beforeit shows up on other imaging tests and is usuallycombined with a CT scan. For some types of cancer, a PET-CT scan is a way tohelp find cancer and learn its stage. “Stage” is a wayto describe where the cancer is and if it has spread. The scan also allows our cancer team to distinguishthe severity and see how the cancer is affecting thepatient’s body functions. The doctor uses all of thisto determine the best treatment, as well as steps forrecovery. In addition to learning the cancer stage, a PET-CT scancan help the doctor: Find the right place for a biopsy. Learn if a cancer treatment is working. Check for new cancer growth after treatmenthas ended. Plan radiation therapy.Memorial Hospital’s digital PET/CT scanner featuresfaster scans with shorter exam times for the patient. And, a 2.9mm resolution means smaller lesions can bedetected – another step in the fight to stop cancer.3D MammogramsMemorial Health proudly offers advanced 3Dmammograms with the Genius 3D Mammography exam. The Genius exam allows doctors to examine breasttissue layer by layer, like the pages of a book. Finedetails are more visible. The radiologist sees clearer, more precise images.Producing extremely clear and more precise imagesgives the patient more accurate readings and reducescallbacks for retesting by up to 40%, compared to 2Dalone. Which means less time spent wondering andworrying. Moreover, the Genius 3D mammography exam isproven to detect 41% more invasive breast cancers. And it benefits women of all ages and breast densities– in fact, it is FDA approved as “superior” for womenwith dense breasts.Memorial offers 3D mammography at three easilyaccessible locations with extended hours, for yourconvenience. Additionally,Eryn is specially trained in hearing aidselection, fitting, and follow-up.To gain your hearing back, call Memorial Ear,Nose & Throat at (937) 578-4300.140 Coleman’s Crossing Blvd., Ste. 200, MarysvilleThe “Ask a Doc” sectionshould not replace medical advicespecific to you and your uniquemedical history. If you have apressing matter you would likeaddressed, please consult yourprimary care physician.14WELLAWARE SUMMER 2021What's NewA: Eryn: A hearing aid is a small electronic device we wantAsk a DocHearing loss can be confusing. Andfrustrating. But having an expert medicalteam to walk you through the process ofprevention, detection, assessment, andtreatment can ease you in, step-by-step,with realistic expectations. What is a hearing aid and how do they helpwith hearing loss?QWhen should I get my hearing tested?A: Eryn: First and foremost, hearing loss can occur atany age, so there is not a set age to start screening. Hearingloss can emerge from heredity issues or noise exposure,as well as from aging factors, so we always recommend abaseline hearing test. While we cannot predict hearing loss,we are able to see trends, so having the initial hearing test tocompare to is a great way to monitor your overall hearing.Do I need a hearing test? Do you ask others to repeat conversations frequently?to be smart enough to amplify the sounds we need to hear, whilemaking the sounds we don’t want to hear weaker – which is achallenge! Hearing aids do not correct or restore hearing loss likeglasses do, but they do exactly as they are named – they aid yourhearing. With proper counseling and a detailed understandingwhat a hearing aid can and cannot do, hearing aids can open upyour world to better hearing again!QI know I need a hearing aid, but I don't wantthe old style like my grandparents had!A: Eryn: Today’s hearing aids are not like your grandparents’hearing aids. They now come in a variety of sizes and colors tohelp make them less noticeable and more fashionable. They alsocome in a variety of cost options as well. My recommendation ona hearing aid would be based on your particular hearing loss andyour specific hearing needs, determined by what environmentsyou are struggling to hear in everyday life situations. Do you have tinnitus (ringing in your ears)?Today’s hearing aids can be pairedwirelessly via Bluetooth to smartphones. You can take phone calls or adjustvolume/background noises with apps! Are others suggesting you get your hearing tested? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, it isrecommended that you schedule a hearing test.QHow long will it take me to hear better?A: Eryn: When patients have their complimentary hearingaid evaluation, I outline the realistic expectations one-on-onewith each patient, so you can understand what a hearing aid canand cannot do – this encourages a successful outcome with anew hearing aid. After we complete the hearing aid fitting, you will noticean immediate benefit once it is turned on. But it can take afew weeks to get accustomed to all the new sounds you hadbeen missing. Your first days with hearing aids could be a bitoverwhelming, so we typically set the hearing aids to graduallyincrease in volume each day over two weeks, helping you slowlyadapt to all the sounds again. For most people, hearing loss isgradual, so you tend to forget how loud some sounds can be!This adjustment period helps ease you back incrementally.Sehnert Joins Memorial HealthBoard of TrusteesMemorial Health has welcomed theappointment of a new board member,Greg Sehnert.
