berginsight.comFleet Management in the AmericasThe top-30 FM providers in theAmericas together have more than11 million active unitsFleet management (FM) is an ambiguous term usedin reference to a wide range of solutions for differentvehicle-related applications. Berg Insight’s definition ofa fleet management solution is a vehicle-based systemthat incorporates data logging, satellite positioning anddata communications to a backoffice application. Thehistory of fleet management solutions goes back severaldecades. On-board vehicle computers first emerged in the1980s and were soon connected to various satellite andterrestrial wireless networks. Today, mobile networks canprovide ubiquitous online connectivity in many regions at areasonable cost and mobile computing technology deliversvery high performance, as well as excellent usability. All ofthese components combined enable the delivery of vehiclemanagement, transport management, driver managementand mobile workforce management applications linkingvehicles and enterprise IT systems.Commercial vehicle fleets play an essential role in theeconomy in both North and Latin America. In North America, there are approximately 29.9 million vehicles in commercialuse. The number of commercial vehicles in operation in LatinAmerica is estimated to 40.7 million. The fleet managementsolution market in the Americas has been in a growth periodfor many years. While the global recession associated with theongoing COVID-19 pandemic has hampered developments in2020–2021 to some extent, the setbacks are expected to betemporary. The advanced North American market is amongother things driven by regulatory developments such as theELD mandates in the US and Canada.
