Answers to Your Questions About R-22 RefrigerantIn October 2014, the EPA announced its final phasedownschedule of R-22. This is taking place over the course ofsix years.Lately I’ve been hearing fromhomeowners who have questions aboutR-22 refrigerant prices. Why is it soexpensive? Should I complete the repairquoted with R-22? What are my options?Here is some information to help enlightenour customers on the history and future ofthis refrigerant.The 2014 EPA decision called for immediate drop from 51million pounds allowed in 2014 to 22 million pounds in2015, 18 million pounds in 2016, 13 million pounds in2017, 9 million pounds in 2018, and 4 million pounds in2019. No new or imported R-22 will be allowed in theUnited States on or after Jan. 1, 2020.C. Daniel BoyetteDirector of RetailOperationsR-22 refrigerant was used widely from themid-1950s until 2005. In fact, R-22 was the“go-to” refrigerant for all HVAC manufacturers. However,it is being phased out by the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA).You can still buy R-22, right? Yes, but steady demandcoupled with shortened supply has caused prices toskyrocket from 15 per pound a few years ago to 65 perpound and more today. Annual allowances have decreasedfaster than the market demand for R-22, which has servedto deplete inventory across the entire air conditioningsupply chain. Service demands for R-22 in the U.S. are stillestimated to be in the tens of millions of pounds per year.By 2020, the market prices for what supply is left willcause prices to be painful and many R-22 users will need totransition to an ozone-safe alternative.What’s the problem? The problem with R-22 is that itcontains chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that, when releasedinto the atmosphere, contribute to the depletion of theozone layer. Therefore the EPA decided to phase out R-22.In its place, R-410A refrigerant, which has a different,more environmentally-friendly chemical makeup than R22, has become the industry standard. R-410A refrigeranthas been in use since 2001 in new equipment, has nophaseout schedule, is more environmentally friendly thanR-22, and costs 75 percent less than R-22.Staying ahead of the phaseout is our solution to ourcustomers to avoid the volatility of the pricing of R-22 foryour servicing needs.How long will R-22 be around? The Montreal Protocol,an international environmental agreement, mandates anannual reduction of R-22 production and a completephaseout by 2020 to help protect the ozone layer.Who needs to be concerned? Training is Key to the Quality of Benson’s TechniciansENSON’S customers know they cancount on us for quality service, andpart of the reason for that is our techniciantraining program.Bthey gain extensive advanced mechanical techniques as wellas extensive knowledge of working with refrigerants –including the opportunity to become certified in handlingrefrigerants and working on HVAC equipment. Uponcompletion of this training, the individuals make a transitionfrom the maintenance department into the servicediagnostic department. They are then dispatched from theirresidences to perform diagnostics and service repairs.We currently have more than half a dozentechnicians who joined us with noprevious HVAC experience. When hiredAthey Crawfordon, new technicians begin our in-houseService Managertraining program through which theyacquire the education to complete maintenance service onan HVAC system. Typically within a 90-day period, thesetechnicians are assigned to a maintenance service vehicleand began completing the maintenances on their own. Butthey’re never alone: The field supervisor within themaintenance department is their direct line of support withtechnical information and mentoring.With the knowledge that they have gained and ongoingassistance from the diagnostic field supervisor, theseindividuals not only provide first-class service to you, ourcustomers, they also are earning a good living in an excitingand interesting field.This program has not only proven to be a success forBenson’s Heating & Air Conditioning’s service department,but also for our employees and their families.
