HeritageTrinity Bible College was founded in 1948 whenthe Holy Spirit brought to reality the vision of L.E.Englar, a North Dakota pastor. Rev. Englarenlisted the support of Rev. G.L. Riffe and Rev.W.H. Kesler. Together they generated sufficientinterest within the North Dakota District Council ofthe Assemblies of God to bring the college intoexistence.Enrollment in the first semester in Ellendale, fall1972, was 333. President Wead retired in 1982,and Ronald Hastie succeeded him. PresidentHastie worked to establish an efficient internalorganization and structure for the college andtraveled thousands of miles establishing goodpublic relations for Trinity throughout the UpperMidwest. The first classes started at Devils Lake, NorthDakota, in Lakewood Park Bible School, thenew college’s name. The original enrollmentconsisted of 18 students. The school yearofficially commenced on October 18, 1948, withW.H. Kesler, Dean, leading the student body andfaculty. He continued in this capacity untilretirement in 1969.In October 1983, evangelist and Trinity alumnusLowell Lundstrom was appointed president. Hebuilt a strong student recruitment on the publicrelations base left by Hastie and greatly expandedthe base. The school’s name was changed a finaltime in 1983 as well. Recognizing its accreditedstatus, the Institute became Trinity Bible College.Enrollment grew, but so did President Lundstrom’sevangelistic ministry! In April 1990, he resignedas president but continues to serve on thecollege’s Board of Regents. Executive VicePresident Robert Maddox served as interimpresident until January 1991 when Ray W. Trask, former missionary to Burma and Indonesia, wasnamed president. After successfully completingan addition to the school’s cafeteria andspearheading a 215,000 refurbishing of the RayUlmer Field House, President Trask left Trinity topursue pastoral ministry. Steve Tvedt then servedas interim president from May 1993 through April1994.From 1948 until 1960, the school grew until theLakewood Park facilities could no longeraccommodate the students. At that time theAssemblies of God church in Aberdeen, SouthDakota had recently constructed a new building, and offered the use of this facility to the Bibleschool. In the fall of 1960, the move was madefrom Devils Lake to Aberdeen, and the school’sname was changed to Hub City Bible Institute(Aberdeen is known as the Hub City). Godcontinued to bless the college and enrollmentsteadily increased. By the 1966-67 school year, there were 143 students attending classes. On May 1, 1994, Howard L. Young wasinaugurated to begin his new duties as the fifthpresident of Trinity. His background in pastoralministry, Christian higher education, andadministration served him well as he ably led thecollege through the remainder of the final decadeof the 20th century. President Young resigned inOctober 2000 to accept a pastorate in Wisconsin, and Dennis D. Niles, the Executive Vice Presidentof the college was asked to serve as the interimpresident. The presidential search committeeconcluded that the college already had the rightperson in place, and Dennis Niles was officiallyelected by the Board of Regents in May 2001 tobe the sixth president of Trinity. President Nilesenthusiastically assumed this office, having beenduly prepared by his experience in pastoralministry and college administration, as well asmore than 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. This growth spurred the need to again find largerfacilities. The former Trinity Hospital building inJamestown, North Dakota, became available, andthe school moved there in the fall of 1967. It wasrenamed Trinity Bible Institute, and 183 studentsenrolled for the fall classes. The college namedRoy H. Wead as its first president in 1968 andgrowth continued. By 1972, the Jamestownbuilding was overflowing, and prayer was offeredto God for larger facilities.God began to develop a miracle as a result of faithand prayer. The University of North Dakota,Ellendale Branch, closed, and Trinity BibleInstitute was able to acquire the campus and all itsequipment for a single dollar! This story has beenpublished in a book, The Great Multi-Million DollarMiracle written by Douglas Wead.8
