What TrinityWestern Universityis All AboutThe Trinity Western UniversityCommunityTrinity Western University is much more than aninstitution with classrooms, books, and exams; it isa passionate, intentional, disciple-making academiccommunity. The faculty and staff are committed to helpingstudents make positive contributions to theirworld, and to serve God, and others, over thecourse of their life. At TWU, staff and faculty takean interest in helping students develop their fullpotential. The University provides manyopportunities where students can hone their giftsand skills as they prepare to make a difference.Accepting the InvitationSince TWU is a learning community with a uniquemission, it is important for students to considerwhat it means to be a member of our community.First, students come into the TWU communitywith an exciting history and share—with fellowstudents, professors, and staff—our mission tohave a positive impact on society. We count it aprivilege to be members together in thisenterprise.Becoming a co-owner in any community bringswith it certain expectations, responsibilities, andsubsequent accountability. Accepting an invitationto become a member of the Trinity WesternUniversity community entails agreeing to live inaccordance with the Responsibilities ofMembership and abide by the policies andguidelines of the University. These seek to foster apositive educational environment that reflects thevalues cherished by our community.Students are called to maintain TWU’s positiveenvironment by being accountable to thecommunity and its members for their own actions. The actions of each member have a direct effecton other co-owners of the community. Studentsare encouraged to take initiative to see where theycan contribute to campus life and have a positiveinfluence on others.Rewards of CommunityAs students become active, responsible membersin the TWU community, they find that thecampus offers many privileges for them to enjoy.Through classes, chapel, community life, collegium membership, and living in residence, students have the unique opportunity to developmeaningful friendships with people from Canadaand around the world. Through qualityfriendships, students come to better understandthemselves and others, explore what is importantto them, and discover what they have to offer.Partnering in ServiceAs students become involved in studentleadership and other campus activities, theydiscover opportunities to partner with others toserve the campus and the surroundingcommunities. In doing so, they earn the respectand trust of people and gain the right to have aneven greater influence in their community and itsdevelopment. As students become shareholders in thiscommunity, engage others in active friendship, and work together to serve others, they will findthat TWU is a learning community second tonone.Trinity Western University’sBasis and PurposeTrinity Western University is a unique Canadianuniversity. It cultivates whole studentdevelopment through increased knowledge anddiscernment, sharpened critical thinking, communication and leadership skills, and adeepened commitment to Jesus Christ and aChristian way of life. The focus of all learning is toenable members of the TWU community toglorify God and serve people wherever Godplaces them in society.TWU’s education provides a God-honouringperspective as well as academic excellence. It helpsstudents analyze and apply a Christian worldview,2

developing thoroughly Christian minds in theprocess. At the same time, employers and otheruniversities respect the high academic quality ofour programs. Both of these components areessential for TWU graduates to become leaderswho have a positive impact on society.TWU challenges its students to serve in a Christlike manner where people live and work: homes, churches, schools, communities, the arts, sciences, human services, education at all levels, health care, recreation, and business. By recognizing theirresponsibilities and their vocations as a ministry, students can bring a refreshing quality to work, encouraging others through their leadership andmodeling to consider the person and the messageof Jesus Christ. During its history, TWU has beena unique and attractive university. Its graduateshave had a steadily growing and significant impacton our world.Trinity Western University, as an arm of theChurch, is first and foremost an academiccommunity of people passionately committed toJesus Christ and to God’s purposes. Three biblicalthemes relate directly to its educational programs. In the Creation Mandate, God gives his humanfamily the directive to develop the potential of thevarious aspects of life. In the GreatCommandment, God enjoins his people to loveand serve him and their neighbours. In the GreatCommission, Christ gives God’s people theresponsibility to function as ambassadors of God’ssalvation to make disciples who also know God’swill for their lives. TWU’s programs are based onthese three mandates so that all members of itscommunity may be and become knowledgeable, perceptive, principled, just, disciplined, andcompassionate disciples of Jesus Christ who willpenetrate every walk of life in Canada and aroundthe world. To accomplish its mission, Trinity WesternUniversity’s programs are established andimplemented according to six core values: Obeying the authority of Scripture: Allteaching, learning, thinking, and scholarshiptake place under the direction of the Bible, thewholly authoritative and truthful Word ofGod. Scripture is the ultimate standard oftruth and the lens by which we evaluate ourlives and the world. Both individually andcorporately, Trinity Western wholeheartedlyembraces all that the Bible teaches in regardto faith, ethical commitments, and way of life. Striving for excellence in universityeducation: TWU promotes not onlyacademic and intellectual excellence, butintegrates these with high standards ofpersonal, moral, and spiritual integrity. Webelieve that God is pleased and honouredwhen his followers stretch their intellectualcapacities and broaden the bounds of theirunderstanding—and do so within a context ofexcellence in whole-person development. Pursuing faith-based and faith-affirminglearning: Trinity Western University’sstarting point for learning is that God callshumans to be stewards of his creation, doersof good toward all people, and agents of hisreconciliation. To nurture such growth, TWUencourages students to consider carefully thebasic worldview tenets of biblical Christianfaith. At the same time, we have a high regardfor honest investigation and expose studentsto diverse viewpoints. Having a transformational impact onculture: God calls his followers to influenceboth individuals and the culture in which theylive. Our greatest hope is that the TWUcommunity influences people to forsake anunbelieving way of life and embrace theChristian faith. Furthermore, TWU’sprograms encourage thought, word, and deedthat affect the dynamics and institutions ofour society on the basis of biblical principles, such as justice and mercy. Servant leadership as a way of life: TrinityWestern University strives to teach and toembody the pattern of servant leadershipexemplified by Jesus Christ. Professors, administrators, staff, and students all haveimportant roles in supporting andencouraging others in their tasks. We want tomotivate and mobilize each other to think andact with creativity, integrity, and skill for thebenefit of all concerned.3

Discipling through community: At TWU,students, staff, faculty, and administrators areall invited and encouraged to deepen theirunderstanding of what it means to be disciplesof Jesus Christ, to practice such discipleship, and to help others be disciples. They respondto God’s calling with wisdom and knowledge, with discernment and creativity, withplayfulness and perseverance, and above all, with love and compassion. They promotebiblical peace and justice that healsbrokenness and restores relationships (Luke1:51-53). They endeavour to act justly, lovemercy, and walk humbly with their God(Micah 6:8).At Trinity Western University, students faculty, and staff are on a journey that takes seriouslyGod’s injunction to work out our salvation withfear and trembling. We believe it is God whoworks in us to will and to act according to Hisgood purpose as we hold out the Word of Life inand through all our campus activities (Phil. 2:12-15).In this way, a TWU education can be the capstoneto a Christian upbringing or an excellent meansfor new Christians to further their total growth. However, the University also welcomes andprovides effective educational programs for otherswho are eager to learn, have an open mind, andare willing, for the duration of their time at TWU,to live in accordance with the Responsibilities ofMembership and to abide by the policies andguidelines of the University.History of TWUTrinity Western University began as the dream ofa number of Canadian evangelical leaders who feltdeeply that all people deserve, and many prefer, the option of university education in a Christiancontext. It seemed an impossible endeavour tolaunch a Christian liberal arts college in WesternCanada, but in 1962 Trinity Junior College openedwith 17 students. Dr. Calvin B. Hanson was thefounding president who served until 1974. Sincethen, the hopes and prayers of hundreds of menand women who have supported and shaped theinstitution through the years have been realizedmany times over. The University operated for its first decade asTrinity Junior College, with a two-year universitytransfer program. In 1972, the name was formallychanged to Trinity Western College through arevision to the governing legislation. Followingthe 1974 appointment of Trinity Western’s secondpresident, Dr. R. Neil Snider, the Trinity WesternCollege Act was amended in 1977 to allow for afour-year university program. Finally in 1979, theAct was amended again to allow the newuniversity to grant baccalaureate degrees. The firststudents to receive such degrees graduated inApril 1980. Currently, Trinity Western Universityis authorized to grant Bachelor, Master, andDoctoral degrees. In 1984, Trinity Western was recognized by theUniversities Canada, the congress of Canada’sinternationally-recognized degree-grantinguniversities, when it was admitted to fullmembership. In 1985, the Province of BritishColumbia authorized the change of name toTrinity Western University. From 2006 to 2014,Jonathan S. Raymond, Ph.D., served as theUniversity’s third president. When he steppeddown, Bob Kuhn, JD, was appointed as theUniversity’s fourth President and ViceChancellor. His term ended in 2019, when Dr.Mark Husbands was appointed as the TWU’s fifthPresident and Vice Chancellor.Since 1962, Trinity Western has continued tobuild a reputation for quality university education.Programs have been continually improved anddeveloped in accordance with Trinity Western’sconcept of Christian university education and inconsultation with representatives for BC’s otheruniversities.Land AcknowledgementStatementWe acknowledge that Trinity Western University,Langley campus is located on the traditionalancestral unceded territory of the Stó:lō people. We acknowledge that Trinity Western University,Richmond campus is located on the traditionalancestral unceded territory of the Musqueampeople.4

Because of its Christianphilosophy, Trinity Western University also seeksto develop in its students an ever-deepeningappreciation for God’s creation; mental, spiritual, and emotional capacity for effective living; and anattitude of service. In this endeavour, TWU seeksto follow in the tradition of other Christianuniversities with long and respected records ofrich, beneficial contributions to society.5

Whole-Person ApproachJust as Christianity addresses the whole person–body, mind, and spirit–so a Christian universityeducation must speak to the whole person–developing students intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually within allthese dimensions of life. Trinity WesternUniversity terms this approach “total personaldevelopment.” Together, the dual emphasis ofChristian integration in the classroom and totalpersonal development provides an excellentatmosphere for nurturing qualities of Christiancharacter, of a biblical attitude of service, ofuplifting and encouraging others, of using one’sabilities to further God’s plan and purposes forhumankind, and of thinking creatively andbiblically about the world. As a Christian university, TWU openly espouses aunifying philosophical framework to which allfaculty and staff are committed withoutreservation. The University identifies with and iscommitted to historic orthodox Christianity asexpressed by the official Statement of Faith. We believe:1. The Scriptures, both Old and NewTestaments, to be the inspired Word of God,without error, in the original writings, thecomplete revelation of his will for thesalvation of men and women and the divineand final authority for all Christian faith andlife.2. In one God, creator of all things, infinitelyperfect and eternally existing in three persons,Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.3. That Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit andborn of the Virgin Mary. He died on thecross, a sacrifice for our sins according to theScriptures. Further, he arose bodily from thedead, ascended into Heaven, where, at theright hand of the Majesty on High, he is nowour High Priest and Advocate.and empower the believer for godly living andservice.5. That humankind was created in the image ofGod but fell into sin and is therefore lost, andonly through regeneration by the Holy Spiritcan salvation and spiritual life be obtained.6. That the shed blood of Jesus Christ and hisresurrection provide the only ground forjustification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus Christ are bornof the Holy Spirit and thus become childrenof God.7. That water baptism and the Lord’s Supper areordinances to be observed by the Churchduring the present age. They are, however, notto be regarded as means of salvation.8. That the true Church is composed of allpersons who, through saving faith in JesusChrist, have been regenerated by the HolySpirit and are united together in the body ofChrist, of which he is the head.9. That only those who are thus members of thetrue Church shall be eligible for membershipin the local church.10. That Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of theChurch, and that every local church has theright under Christ to decide and govern itsown affairs.11. In the personal, premillennial, and imminentcoming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that thisBlessed Hope has a vital bearing on thepersonal life and service of the believer.12. In the bodily resurrection of the dead; of thebeliever to everlasting blessedness and joywith the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgmentand everlasting conscious punishment.4.
