AdmissionsMeridian Community College is committed toproviding excellent post-secondary educationalopportunities. MCC does not exclude fromparticipation in, deny the benefits of, or otherwisediscriminate against any person in any program oractivity of the College on the basis of race, religion,color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. This isin compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of1964; Title IX, Education Amendments of 1972 ofthe Higher Education Act; the Age DiscriminationAct of 1975; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Actof 1973, as amended; and the Americans withDisabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).Home-schooled students must present an officialtranscript with a graduation date and a listingof specific courses completed from a recognizedhome school agency. If no such document isavailable, the parent of the home-schooledstudent may present an official transcript withthe date of graduation and with a notarizedsworn affidavit stating that the student’s recordis accurate and complete.Any correspondence or online courses usedto meet high school graduation requirementsmust come from an institution accredited bythe Distance Education Accrediting Commission(DEAC) or a state or regional accrediting agency.Students who are 21 years of age or older andwho do not have a high school diploma or HSEmay enroll in Meridian Community College bycompleting the application for admission andby making a satisfactory score on an Ability toBenefit test as designated by the U.S. Departmentof Education.General Admission RequirementsMCC ascribes to an “open admissions” policyconsistent with all appertaining laws.Students seeking admission to MCC must submitthe following: A completed Application for Admission. An official high school transcript from ahigh school accredited by a state or regionalaccrediting agency. The high school transcriptmust show the date of graduation and thehigh school principal’s signature. A studentmay present a high school equivalency(HSE) transcript from General EducationalDevelopment (GED), Test Assessing SecondaryCompletion (TASC) or High School EquivalencyTest (HiSET) in lieu of a high school transcript. A copy of their scores from a national AmericanCollege Test (ACT) or the ACCUPLACER test.ACCUPLACER is a computer-based test whichis administered in the Holladay Center foreLearning. Although a minimum score is notrequired for admission to MCC, test scores arerequired as they are used to determine courseand/or program placement.8Admission to the College does not insureadmission into a particular program ofstudy. Some of the programs of study arecompetitive and require additional screeningprior to program admission. Academic advisorsprovide students with admission criteria for eachprogram of study.The Admissions Office will inform each student inwriting of his/her acceptance to MCC.Mississippi Occupational DiplomaStudents who complete high school with aMississippi Occupational Diploma (MOD) areeligible for admission to Meridian CommunityCollege. Students with an MOD should be awarethat they are not eligible for Federal Title IVFinancial Aid. Students who complete high schoolwith an MOD are encouraged to earn a high schoolequivalency (HSE) and, therefore, possibly receivefederal aid. Students who attendedanother college since attending MCC must submitan official transcript from that college to theMCC Admissions Office. Academic standing ofreadmission students will be based upon theiracademic performance during the last enrollmentat MCC and/or another college. Readmissionapplicants are admitted in “good standing” or on“academic probation.” In order to be admitted in“good standing,” a student must have completedthe last semester of enrollment with a 2.0 gradepoint average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.Students seeking readmission to a Workforceprogram after a period of non-continuousenrollment may be required to prove currency andrelevancy of knowledge. The “Advanced StandingExamination” will be used to validate programcompetencies and currency and relevancy ofknowledge. When present, program readmissionguidelines also apply. Program faculty, inconsult with the appropriate dean, will evaluatetranscripted credit to determine the need forprogram competency evaluation.Declaration ofAcademic Fresh Start PolicySome students who have not attended MCC forat least four semesters (not including summerterms) may be faced with a deficit in quality pointsand a low GPA because of their prior academicrecord. Sometimes the deficit in earlier gradesis such that it prevents these students fromgraduating. The Declaration of Academic FreshStart Policy addresses this situation.Upon written request via the Declaration ofAcademic Fresh Start form and subsequentapproval, a student’s previous grades at MCC maybe eliminated from consideration in calculatingthe local GPA for graduation purposes. Admissions and Registrationinstructional (academic/career and technical)work completed at MCC prior to the point of reenrollment for the purpose of calculating localGPA and assessing graduation status except fordesignated saved credits up to a maximum of15 semester hours. Once Academic Fresh Starthas been declared, discounted work will not beconsidered toward calculating local GPA fromthat date forward except for approved savedcredits. No grades will be removed from thestudent’s academic record. A student who is granted Academic FreshStart will be allowed to save or bring forwarda maximum of 15 semester hours to be usedtoward graduation requirements. The decisionas to which classes will be saved and carriedforward must be made at the time AcademicFresh Start is declared. Credit will be awardedfor the saved courses, and the actual gradesearned will be included in GPA calculations. A minimum of four semesters (not includingsummer terms) must have lapsed fromthe end of the most recent semester ofenrollment at MCC prior to the AcademicFresh Start declaration. The student must complete a Declaration ofAcademic Fresh Start form with an advisor, andthe advisor will then submit the completedform to the Registrar’s Office. Academic Fresh Start can be declared onlyonce at MCC. Students will be advised that other colleges/universities to which they may transfer mayor may not honor the change in GPA resultingfrom a Declaration of Academic Fresh Start. Students who have had more than one foursemester lapse between periods of enrollmentmay elect to declare Academic Fresh Start forone or more of those periods, provided thatonce the Academic Fresh Start is established, itwill apply to all enrollments prior to that time.
