Saint Benedict was a sixth century Italianmonk who, in effect, is the patron saint ofworkaholics. He was a perfectionist wholearned from experience that pushing himselfand others too hard can lead to spiritual ruin.In what we might call his “recovery” fromworkaholism, Benedict founded a religiousorder based on his constitution entitled TheRule of Saint Benedict. It emphasizes theimportance of creating schedules that leaveenough time each day to pray, work, eat, rest, read, and study God’s Word. The Rule wasso effective that it revolutionized Europe bycreating a reasonable approach to life foreveryone, not just monks. The Rule of Saint Benedict begins with thesewords: “Listen. Incline the ear of the heart.”One of the tragedies of modern life isthat listening for God’s voice has becomeincreasingly difficult. God has too muchcompetition: iPhones, text messages, socialmedia, and so on. And those are just theelectronic ones. There’s the boss, the neighbor, gas prices, and inflation. These are just somereasons why The Rule of Saint Benedict remainsrelevant today. The same can be said for this weekend’sGospel from Saint Luke. It recounts the storyof two sisters – Martha and Mary – who livetogether in the town of Bethany. Martha wasa workaholic who, when Jesus visited their0064home, did allthe serving.Having no“work/lifebalance”made heranxious andworried.Mary, on theother hand, sat besidethe Lord andlistened toHim speak. Is there anyimage more beautiful than this Mary sitting atthe feet of Jesus and listening to Him?Listening is thematic in Luke’s gospel. It beginswith Zechariah, the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds all listening to God’s voice.Decades later, others listened to Jesus onhillsides and seashores.God’s competitors are noisy, indeed, andthey often lead us to anxiety and worry. Let’simitate Mary from Bethany and Benedict fromItaly and listen to God’s voice so His peacemay rule our hearts!God bless you,Father Matthew Guckinwww.ourladymtcarmel.orgJuly 17, 2022
