ALPHA UPSILONBAYSTATERDELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONALThe Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personalgrowth of women educators and excellence in educationVolume 57, Number 3Winter/Spring 2015Think About It .We all remember the day we were invited to become a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Obviously one of yourpeers thought you were worthy of membership. I am sure you had a lot of questions, “I already belong to theMTA or FTA, do I really need another organization to take up my limited time”? After hearing the sevenpurposes, and that this was an organization that was interested in you, you decided to join. Of course there wasthe question of dues, some chapters prefer to tack on a few dollars toward a favorite project rather than facefund raising projects each year. Other chapters have an established project they work at either once a year orthroughout the year. The project could be a chance to raise money for scholarships for high schools students intheir district or a special educational project well established in their area. Regardless, as teachers, we want tohelp others succeed in their life goals. There is more to DKG and I call it camaraderie. Here we can talk to our peers about our educational concernsand they will understand. I am sure that if we could talk to our founders, this was the basic premise fororganizing. Internationally, look how we have grown!Times are certainly different now than in 1929, but many things are the same. DKG has certainly tried to keepup with the 21st century. There has been discussion in some chapters about the reason for keeping certainpractices encouraged by International. For instance, the example of continuing the area meetings each year.Yes, the area meetings are additional work for the chapter president, but the work that goes into planning thismeeting should be shared by each chapter in the area. The reason for this meeting should be recognized-it is anopportunity for each DKG member to meet members from the other chapters in their area. After all, we are allmembers of the same organization. We share the same concerns whether we have retired or are currently in theclassroom. Getting together one day a year does not seem like such a huge burden.Let us carry this to the next level, State Meetings. Now that you have met others of like interests, come seethem at our state meetings. Yes, we have heard all the reasons for not attending, i.e. the cost, the distance andthe timing. You are right, those who plan the meetings try very hard to address these concerns and planmeetings that have varied agendas. Again, come and you will see someone you have met before and “catchup”. Think of it as something you deserve, to take some time for yourself and rejuvenate!

Moving between contemporary Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, Orphan Train is apowerful tale of upheaval and resilience, second chances, and unexpected friendship. The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh led by Bette Bridges, KappaChapterThe Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysucklefor devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s beenmore useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the fostercare system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world isthrough flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system withnowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers shechooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has herquestioning what’s been missing in her life. And when she’s forced to confront a painfulsecret from her past, she must decide whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.8
