In the first two years the FortisNet network has catalysed aFellowship, supported five PhD studentships inmusculoskeletal health and 37 new collaborative projectswhich have yielded a return of over 10:1 on investment. Ithas catalysed a Global Challenges Research Fund project andsupported the commercialisation of new technologies. The FortisNet community have leading technological capacityranging from orthopaedics to materials science, assistivetechnologies, rehabilitation, prosthetics, device design,software development, epidemiology, clinical design andtrials, patient and public involvement and businessincubation.10

FORGING NEWCOLLABORATIONSWe have supported collaborative pump-priming projects inorthopaedics, assistive technology and rehabilitation.These represent new, interdisciplinary collaborations, all of which arewith partners external to the University of Southampton, includingstakeholders, industry and an NHS Trust. Projects will report at theend of March 2018.We are grateful to the Higher Education Innovation Fund for financialsupport for this event.17
