www.aiu.edu Campus Mundi # 07Atlantic International UniversityFlexibility of time is the greatest benefitInterview with José Vicente Chang Gómez, from Ecuador, graduated with PhD in Environmental SciencesHow has the andragogic learning atAIU impacted your life, professionally and personally? In reality, this andragogic systemallows you to manage your time. In mycase, I was able to elaborate and planmy time and calendar. When it comesto turning in little by little the assignments that AIU would request. In thismanner, it became a double life experience, I would say, because wheneverI would have questions I would askvia the platform and I would get anadequate answer to those questions. You have worked as a professor forthe las 25 years, correct?Correct. I have been a professor atthe ESPOL (Litoral Polytechnic Superior College) in Guayaquil, Ecuador–which is where Iam from– for thelast 25 years. Inaddition, I havebeen involved inresearch projectsand consultingin approximately46 projects. Andnow, because ofthe knowlegde Ihave gained in myresearch for mydoctoral thesis atAIU, I have elevatedthe level of thetransmission ofinformation to all my undergraduateand graduate students, because I amalso a professor of a Master Class inEnvironmental Sciences at the ESPOL.You just mentioned your doctoralthesis, which was presented at theInternational Seminar of Environmental Education and SustainableDevelopment. What can you tell usabout the thesis that you were able tocomplete with AIU?Yes I had the chance to present mythesis at this international Seminar. My thesis is based on a simulation ona dispersion plume of water from a desalination, In other words, this water isextremely salty, for a real case implemented at a refinery in Ecuador, a hydrocarbon refinery. The investigationwas based on field data and wasevaluated with groups of students andcolleagues, and afterwards applyingit to work using mathematical models and tools. And we were able toderive many conclusions. One of thoseconclusions was how to avoid andprevent the contamination of marinelife from one side, and from the otherside, a proposal of certain parameterthat should be inserted which are nottoday in the environmental norms ofmy country. And lastly, I was able to combinethe experiences for the processes oflearning and teaching in an andragogic system like the one that AIU offers. What do you think has beenthe greatest benefit to your lifenow that you have completed thisprogram at AIU?Yes, the first benefit was that Icould use my time that I generally useto do routine activities to completemy Degree. What I observed from thisandragogic system is that you muststay in discipline to be able to satisfythe requirements asked at AIU. Butalso, the digital library that AIU offers, has thousands and thousands of documents that can be read or researchedat any time, in a way that the university doesn’t impose on you a rigidschedule like other universities that Ihave attended to. But rather it is flexible so that the candidate can decidewhat it’s schedule will look like. That isa huge benefit that other universitiesdo not have.In your opinion, how does AIU differenciate itself from other universities from an academic point of view?I think that AIU, with its facultystaff, everyday improves and it is ata very high level like other universities. Just like right now it is required inmy country, Ecuador. It is a law thatthe professor not only teach but arealso involved in research. This is nowa regulation that has being enforced. And the same way, the system thatAIU offers allowed me to develop andimprove my research. In the samemanner, I could combine teachingand research at the same time, and Ibelieve that I did it with great succes. We are so grateful that you couldbe with us, studing from Ecuador,Dr. José Vicente Chang Gómez.Thank you. Anything else that youwish to share?I want to say thank you to all thefaculty, administration tutors, andadvisors that are part of the AIU family. Now, I can consider myself part ofthe great family and we will grow stepby step during the course of the years. And obviously I am very happy tohave obtained my Degree. Thank youfor the support I have received duringthe entire process.

www.aiu.edu Campus Mundi # 07Atlantic International UniversityOriginal thinking freedom of the soulInterview with Edward Lambert, Doctor of Economics graduated from AIU last FebruaryCan you explain your backgroundand why you decided to studyEconomics?I have a varied background in business and accounting. I helped a failingbusiness of 400,000 yearly revenueturn around and succeed. I organizeda farmer’s market in Corvallis, Oregon.I developed an entrepreneurial modelof a cooperative.Yet, economics has always been apassion of mine. Why? I have alwaysbeen concerned about healing peopleand taking care of them. I see theeconomy as a cause for why manypeople are unhappy and sick. For thatreason, economics interests me.Can you tell us about the equationof “Effective Demand”?The famous economist Keyneswrote about a basic concept called Effective Demand. But you will not findthis term in many textbooks. Why?No one ever found a good equation todescribe it. Many have tried.I have found an equation based onlabor’s share of national income thatdescribes exactly Keynes’ concept ofEffective Demand. The equation simplysays that labor share determines a limitupon the utilization rates of labor andcapital. Here is the basic equation:(Effective labor share will tell us thelimits to employment. Recently, laborshare has declined in most countries.Consequently we see unemploymentrising. As the economy reaches the effective demand limit, aggregate profit rateswill stop growing and the economy willslow down. The economy could chooseto stay sustainably at the effective demand limit, yet most economies try topush beyond it leading to a recession. The start of every recession sinceWWII could have been predicted bymy equations. In January, I wrote that the stockmarket will reach its top this year. Iwrote that stocks will stop rising andstay within a narrow range. Stockshave done just that since January. TheUnited States economy is reaching theend of the current business cycle. What is the importance ofthis equation? The importance of the equation is tofinally have an equation for EffectiveDemand, which is the basis of much ofKeynes’ work. To finally have an equation to calculate Effective Demand willbe a big breakthrough in economics. Effective demand will reveal the limits toa business cycle, the limits to monetarycapacityEffective labor share utilizationunemployment1–())rate*policy, the limits to productivity, thelimits to employment and more. Also, the equation implies that Ifpeople are paid more, there will bemore potential employment of peopleand capital. Proving this with an equation has been difficult. Yet, if we lookaround the world at every country, wesee people receiving less money fortheir work. The result is that the globaleconomy is now sick. The cure will be acoordinated action among many countries to raise wages. What could be the reach of your work?Important economists within theUnited States know about my work. Some doubt my theory. Some supportmy theory. They are all waiting forevidence that the economy will followmy equations. I debate many subjectswith top economists. For example, Idiffer from most economists on thepotential GDP of the United States. My equations say that potential GDPis lower than the government says.Yet, we see the government continually adjusting potential GDP downward to where I say it is.The potential of my work is to finallyhave a simple equation that describesprecisely the limits of the businesscycle. This would make economic planning much more efficient. Yet, beyondthat, the equation also shows howthose limits can be raised by increasinglabor’s share of national income.Edward Thomas LambertScholar and Academic Advisor with AIU“I am grateful to Atlantic International University, for giving me the opportunity to do my researchinto Effective Demand during a Doctorate program.AIU is a great university for original research. We stand by our students and give them thefreedom to explore. We appreciate their originalresearch papers. We take pride in them.Students tell me that they are inspired by mywork, yet I too am inspired by their work.”Potentially my equations could bea breakthrough for economics. Timewill tell. The economy has to follow my equations over the next twoyears. So far the economy is followingexactly my equations. How did you come up with thisequation? Can you share the processof developing it?I was looking at data one night andmaking various graphs. I put laborshare and capacity utilization togetherand saw a pattern, which was circular. And I had an idea that the unemployment rate bounded that circularmotion. I made some equations andstarted looking at more data. I have

www.aiu.edu Campus Mundi # 07made many more equations built uponthat original idea.I remember one night I was trying tofind an equation to describe monetarypolicy using my equations. I closed myeyes and thought. Then from the backof my mind appeared an equation. I donot know how it appeared. It seemedto come out of nothing. I entered somedata into the equation and saw thatthe equation described perfectly themonetary policy of the United Statesfor decades. I did not understand theequation. It took me many days to understand it. In many ways, the processof discovering these equations is amysterious one. What moved you to develop this?A passion to research and to know.Once you had it, how did you realize that you had found such originalwork? What did you feel? There is a lot of work to be done withthese equations of Effective Demand. They may look simple, but understanding how they work is not simple. Eventhough they represent a new discoveryin economics, there is a responsibilityto develop them. It is constant work fueled by my passion. I work late at nighton these equations. Is it hard to stand for your work?It is not hard to defend my work. Ican see weaknesses in the logic of othereconomists. It is a passion to explainthe equations. How do you validate your work?Socially, I only need to stay visibleonline. I only need to maintain respectable contact with other economists and let time prove or disprovemy equations. Is it important to find validation? It is important to find validationfrom other economists. That is the onlyway for the equations to go beyond meand into recognized economic theory. How will you benefit from your work?I do not know yet how I will benefitfrom my work. The important thingfirst is to test the theories. As an advice to students, why is it important to elaborate original thinking?Original thinking represents freedom ofthe soul. No matter where you are, youwill always have your mind. You couldbe in a prison cell without other peopleand without books. Yet, you coulddiscover secrets of the universe by justusing your mind.Is original thinking, the true asset ofthe humanity? Why?Original thinking is the true assetof humanity. The hope is that we willapply our original thinking to make theworld truly better. What is, in your opinion, the bestpath for a student to create originalthinking? The best path to create originalthinking is to ask questions, lots ofquestions and then be open-mindedto the answers that you receive. Keepasking questions and when the worlddoes not have satisfactory answers toAtlantic International Universityyour question, find the answer withinyour own mind. Questions fuel original thinking. How could this “Original Thinking”affect the economy of the nations?Inequality has become a big subjectin economics. We need equations andtheories to show how inequality hurtssociety economically. My equations areopening up a new door in that area.Could this be the way to reduceinequality gap among nations,or among people?Yes, the equations that I am researching show that inequality ishurting the global economy. Justone example of my work shows thatproductivity growth stops completelywhile the economy is up against theeffective demand limit. What is the chance foran original thought to havea real impact in society? My work has already had animpact on economics. I have hadcontact with well-known economists.I challenge them.Visit Edward Lambert’s blog. http://effectivedemand.typepad.com/ed/
