ConfidentialENGINEERING BULLETINProduct: EVAPCO AXS vs. BAC 3000 vs. SPX/Marley NCNo. 74Date: Jun 2015Introduction:This engineering bulletin is designed to compare the EVAPCO AXS product line ofcooling towers to the BAC* Series 3000 and SPX/Marley* NC cooling towers. Use this guideto promote the application and key advantages of EVAPCO AXS cooling towers to yourengineers, contractors and owners.*BAC is a registered trademark of Baltimore Aircoil Co., Inc. with whom EVAPCO has no affiliation or relationship*SPX/Marley is a registered trademark of SPX Cooling Technologies, Inc. with whom EVAPCO has no affiliation or relationship

2Advantages:Drift EliminatorsAir Inlet Louvers1. Bonded Fill MediaEVAPCOEVAPCO crossflow fill features integral drifteliminators and air inlet louvers. The integral designallows for entire bonded block sections to be easilyhandled. Block sections are each 1 ft. wide x 2 ft.long and the section height varies with unit size. Thebonded block design allows for minimal air bypasssince the fill sheets will not separate over time.Fill MediaEVAPCO Crossflow FillBAC and SPX/MarleyBAC and SPX/Marley utilize sheet fill in their crossflow cooling towers. This fill is a hangingsheet-type which is supported from galvanized steel bars or tubes that span the width of thecasing panels. The sheet fill is not bonded together so the spacing between fill sheets duringmanufacturing is critical to overall performance. The fill sheets may potentially separate overtime allowing air to bypass. Air bypass leads to a negative thermal performance impact since aportion of the incoming air does not make contact with the recirculated system water.Marley sheet fill includes integral drift eliminators and air inlet louvers. BAC sheet fill featuresintegral drift eliminators and separate inlet louvers. Direct exposure to the outside elementsincreases the potential for visible scale build up on the fill sheets over time.Gaps in Integral Drift EliminatorsPoint of View: Inside of Unit Looking OutInlet Louvers and Separated Fill SheetsPoint of View: Outside of Unit Looking In

32. Bottom Supported Fill MediaEVAPCOThe bonded block crossflow fill is bottomsupported with G-235 galvanized steel channelsas standard. The supports will change to Type 304or 316 stainless steel dependent upon the stainlesssteel basin construction. The bottom supportsallow a minimum clearance of 3” above the basinfloor for routine basin cleaning. This allowssufficient room for optional factory supplied sumpsweeper piping to be used whenever sweeperpiping is required. An Example of Crossflow Fill SaggingPoint of View: Inside of UnitBasin FloorAXS Bottom Fill Support Drawing DimensionsBAC and SPX/MarleyHanging fill sheets may begin to sag and stretchover time until the fill sheets are touching thebasin floor. It may be necessary to field cut the fillsheets 3-4” from the bottom to allow access forroutine basin cleaning. Trimming the fill sheetsreduces efficiency and creates a negative thermalperformance impact. Any sediment or debrisunder the fill sheets will be trapped causing thelikelihood of localized corrosion to greatlyincrease when the fill sheets rest on the basinfloor.

43. Modular Hot Water BasinsEVAPCOThe hot water basins are designed such that they canbe easily removed and replaced without the need toremove any side or end casing panels. The standardconstruction for hot water basins is G-235 galvanizedsteel*. EVAPCO’s modular hot water basin designallows for minimal downtime and lower replacementcosts over the competitor’s traditional crossflow hotwater basin design.EVAPCO Hot Water Basin Exploded ViewBAC and SPX/MarleyOther crossflow cooling towers include hot waterbasins constructed of G-235 galvanized steel asstandard*. However, the hot water basins are integralto the end or side panels. Replacement costs could behigher for this design because it typically requiresadditional work to remove and replace the hot waterbasins.Corroded Hot Water Basin* Due to the corrosive environment of the hot water basin it is not uncommon to replace thehot water basin before the unit has exceeded its useful life.

54. Cold Water Basin Covers (optional)EVAPCOCold water basin covers are an optional accessory for the AXS cooling tower. The cold waterbasin covers effectively block sunlight and debris from coming in direct contact with basin waterat the air inlet ends.*The material of construction for coldwater basin covers will match that of thebasin panels (G-235 galvanized steel,Type 304 or Type 316 stainless steel) andwill be provided with handles for easyremoval and handling. These removablecovers provide protection against debrisand sunlight from the air inlet ends whilestill offering access for routine basincleaning and visual inspection fromoutside the unit.EVAPCO Cold Water Basin CoversBACBAC utilizes a sloped basin feature which does not allow sunlight to come in direct contact withbasin water at either air inlet end of the unit.* The basin slopes up to the basin end panels at thebottom of the fill sheets as part of the basin design. Although the design provides protectionagainst sunlight through the air inlet ends it does not allow access for routine basin cleaning andvisual inspection from outside the unit.SPX/MarleySPX/Marley has an optional accessory similar to the cold water basin covers offered byEVAPCO. The covers claim to protect the basin from sunlight and debris.** Due to the inherent design of crossflow cooling towers sunlight will contact basin waterthrough the fan cylinder opening for any manufacturer.
