OxidizersOXYGEN & GAS MIXTURESOXYGENCONCENTRATION 23.5%6Confidential

OxidizersSUPPORTS COMBUSTION.NEVER ALLOW PETROLEUM‐BASED PRODUCTS TO COME INTOCONTACT WITH OXIDIZERS.SEPARATE FROM COMBUSTIBLES & FLAMMABLES INSTORAGE. 20’ DISTANCE, OR 5’ HIGH, 1/2 HOUR FIRE WALL7Confidential

OxygenOdorless, colorless gasNon‐flammable but is necessary for other material to burnHyperoxia8Confidential

Oxygen Cylinder9Confidential

InertsNITROGEN, ARGON,HELIUM, CO2Simple Asphyxiantswhich can displaceoxygenWill not support life10Confidential

InertsUSE IN WELL VENTILATED AREASDO NOT DISPOSE OR VENT OFF UNUSED QUANTITIES.MONITOR FOR OXYGEN 19.5% WHEN USED IN CONFINEDSPACE11Confidential

Inerts12Confidential

ArgonOdorless, colorless gasCan be stored with flammables or combustibles.13Confidential

FlammablesACTYLENE, PROPANE,PROPLYENEGas flammables inconcentration of 13% orless in air by volumeGas in flammable rangegreater than 12% byvolume14Confidential

FlammablesSTORE IN A WELL VENTILATED LOCATIONKEEP AWAY FROM HEAT SOURCESSTORE AWAY FROM OXIDIZERS AND COMBUSTIBLES15Confidential

Flammables16Confidential

AcetyleneSlight garlic‐like odorBurns easily in air 2.5% LEL ‐ 99% UELMay be explosive under high pressure Used at 15 psi or less17Confidential

ToxicsARSINE, NITROGENDIOXIDE, BORONTRICHLORIDEMaterial capable ofcausing death or seriousdebilitationIn absence of data onhuman toxicity tested onlaboratory animals has aLC50 value18Confidential

Cylinder IdentificationEvery Gas Cylinder or VesselMust Be Clearly Labeled 20Product NameDOT ID NumberDOT Hazard ClassManufacture Name & LocationPrecautionary StatementConfidential

Cylinder IdentificationNever rely on color of cylinder for identification.Color of cylinder may vary by manufacturer or owner.Always use product label to properly identify contents.21Confidential

Cylinder IdentificationNever modify, cover or remove a label. If cylinder label becomes illegible or detached Write product name with black marker. Mark as “contents unknown” if unknown. Contact manufacturer or distributor.22Confidential

Physical Hazards of Compressed Gas CylindersPressureWeightStabilityMechanical FailureMovement23Confidential

Recognize the HazardsPressureCauses Typical High Pressure Cylindershave 1800 – 3000 PSI Not regulating pressureConsequences Uncontrolled release Activation of relief device Container failure24Confidential

Recognize the HazardsWeightCauses This stuff is heavy Nitrogen 160 251 lbs Argon 450 1059 lbs25Confidential

Recognize the HazardWeightConsequences Smashed finger Back strain Broken foot Internal injuries Amputation26Confidential

Recognize the HazardStabilityCauses Naturally unstable Transitions Uneven surfaces Debris on floorsConsequences Falling cylinder Falling piles Liquid container tipping over27Confidential

Recognize the HazardsMechanical Failure Cylinder Valves Regulator28Confidential

Recognize the HazardsMechanical FailureCauses Over pressurizationBackflowFlashbackDamaged in transportationWorn threadsValve packing and seatsConsequences Flying debris Property damage Injury/Death29Confidential

Recognize the HazardMovementCauses Lose of control while rolling Trying to catch falling cylinders Miss alignment of cart hooks Failure to secure to cart30Confidential

Recognize the HazardsMovementConsequences Smashed hand Back strain Shoulder strain Broken foot Internal injuries Finger amputation31Confidential

Cylinder StorageStore in dry, ventilated location.Secure from falling or rolling.Protect from falling objects.Do not use as a door stop.Keep valve closed when not in use.32Confidential

Cylinder StorageStore with valve closed andcap on.Hand tighten caps.Do not store in extremetemperatures near flames ordirect heat.If ice and snow accumulateon cylinders, thaw at roomtemperature.Do not store near gasoline.33Confidential

Cylinder StorageFuel gas Always in upright position. 20 feet from oxygen & combustible material. Never place anything on top of cylinder.Oxygen 20 feet from flammable or combustible material.Separation can be 1 hour fire wall.Cylinders in use or connected can be storedtogether.34Confidential

Cylinder HandlingPersonal Protective Equipment35Confidential

Cylinder HandlingProtect valve, couplings, regulators, hose and apparatus fromoil & grease.Never drop or strike a cylinder.Do not lift cylinder by cap.Do not weld on lift attachments.36Confidential

Cylinder HandlingIf cylinder does not have a fixed valve handle, a non‐adjustable wrench must be with the cylinder while in use.Valve must be closed before moving a cylinder. Unless secured to a cart, regulator must be removed and cap inplace.37Confidential

Cylinder HandlingCheck container for bulges, dents, pits.Check container and valve for corrosion.Do not direct a gas stream directly at any person.Cylinders must be kept away from actual hot work area toprotect from sparks, slag, etc.Cylinders need a check valve to prevent backflow.38Confidential

Cylinders & RegulatorsNever attempt to repair or modify a regulator. Before attaching to cylinder Stand to one side of cylinder outlet Open valve slightly, then close Never use Teflon tape on a CGA fittingBefore removing from cylinder Close cylinder valve Release gas from regulator39Confidential

Cylinders & Valve LeaksNEVER USE A LEAKING CYLINDER.Attempt to stop leak by closing valve.Move outdoors & away from ignition sources, allow to slowlyempty.Tag or mark cylinder to warn others that it is leaking.40Confidential

Cylinders & FireMove cylinders away from fire if possible.Use water to keep cylinders cool.Inform emergency personnel of type & amount of gas on‐site.41Confidential
