SID200 MFE AW.qxp1/9/064:22 pmPage 10Courses are assessed using a combination of examinations and assignments.Courses vary in the way they areassessed, with core courses placingthe emphasis on examinations, andelectives stressing written assignments, some of which may be undertaken inteams. Although classroom participation is not graded, many courses givecredit for the case study write-ups thatform the basis for classroom discussions. The wide range of electives enablesyou to gain a deeper knowledge of areasof special interest by choosing fivecourses from those on offer. You maysubmit a 10,000 word individual projectreport instead of one of your five electives.ELECTIVES ANTICIPATED FOR THE 2007/08COURSE INCLUDE:Advanced FinancialEconometricsLessons fromFinancial HistoryAdvanced FinancialManagementMacroeconomicsPrivate EquityArbitrage Opportunitiesand Hedge FundsCapital Raising TechniquesCompetition and RegulationContinuous Time FinanceCorporate GovernanceCorporate ValuationEconomics of IndustryEntrepreneurial FinanceFixed Income and DerivativesRestructuring andImplementationRisk ManagementTaxation, Finance andBusiness StrategyTrading and MarketMicrostructurePlease note that the electivecourses offered are subjectto change.ELECTIVESCASE STUDYTHE FIXED INCOMEAND DERIVATIVESELECTIVE10THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD MFEThe Fixed Income and Derivativeselective deals first with the instrumentsof financing and debt markets, andsecond with derivatives. The idea of theelective is to combine classical financetheory and asset pricing as relatingto debt, fixed income instruments, mortgages and bonds, in terms of thestructural theories behind them. Tosee how these highly specialised, highlytechnical topics are applied in the realworld, Dr. Dimitrios Tsomocos co-teaches the course with Dr. Manos Menardosof JP Morgan.Theoretical sessions alternate withpractical ones where students apply thetheoretical constructs and analyticaltools they learn. Another very importantpart of the elective is the emphasison the limitations and the underlyingeconomic principles of fixed incomeand derivatives pricing. For example, what happens when asset markets areincomplete? And how can the modeltechniques for fixed income and derivatives be used for risk management, crisis prevention and price management? The elective also touches uponsome microeconomic consequencesof risk management where the issueof financial stability emerges.

SID200 MFE AW.qxp1/9/064:22 pmPage 11“The core areas of botheconomics and finance arecovered, which equip studentswith both solid theory foundation and practical techniques. Also the elective coursesinclude fields such as PrivateEquity and Fixed Income, which are essential for professionals in investment banks, and Advanced CorporateFinance and Mergers andAcquisitions, which suit myparticular interests.”Wei Nie, ChinaCASE STUDYTHE PRIVATEEQUITY ELECTIVECo-taught by Dr Tim Jenkinson ofSaïd Business School and HumphreyBattcock, a Director of AdventInternational, the Private Equity courseopens up one of the more complexareas of financial management. Privateequity investments are illiquid and hardto value and those who manage themoften become engaged in the decisionmaking of the companies involved, all of which makes practical skills asimportant as theoretical knowledge.Assessed through four case studies, twospreadsheet assignments and a grouppresentation, the course demands thatstudents constantly apply the materialthey have been presented.Dr Tim Jenkinson says: “Practicalrelevance is hard-wired into the course.Humphrey Battcock and I design acourse that addresses the current issuesfacing the private equity industry. We wanted to integrate practice andfinance principles from the word go.”WWW.SBS.OXFORD.EDU/MFE11

However colleges make independent student selections and you may notbe accepted by the college you choose.Early applications are recommendedbut are not a guarantee of a place. While all the colleges have differentpersonalities and most students will tellyou that theirs is superior, actual differences are limited.
