For the first four years, the College was inthe old Franklin School building on Market Street, latermoving to Terrace Heights (1934-1945) and eventuallyto a building next to the current Sam Benn Gym (19451955). Originally the College was operated as a privateinstitution but came under control of the AberdeenSchool District in 1945, which provided much neededfinancial stability. Since that time, Grays Harbor Collegehas continuously served residents of both Grays Harborand Pacific counties, offering academic, professionaland technical courses at a reasonable cost and givingthem the opportunity to learn and live close to home.Funds were allocated for purchase of the current 40acre site overlooking the Harbor in 1955 and classesopened at this existing location in 1958. The Collegeincluded classrooms, science laboratories, library, gymnasium, administrative offices and the studentservice facility (HUB).www.ghc.edu Your Community – Your College – Your Future

So who is this brawny, tough man of greatstrength, walking from the woods with a massive log onhis shoulder? While the traditional, chubby-cheekedCharlie, crew-cut and bare-chested, will forever be nearand dear to our hearts, in 2015, it was time to give himan updated look. Current students needed tounderstand what a choker-setter in the woods reallydoes, how courageous a job that has always been.Working with graphic designer Amy Ostwald, a clearerstory of Charlie Choker took shape. He now wears ahard hat for safety, along with the work shirt and heavygloves of today’s logger. The tall trees in thebackground indicate his workspace. His connection tothe College remains steadfast.Welcome Charlie Choker ’15.Watch for him on the fieldsand courts, supporting ourathletic teams. We have notforgotten or cast asidetraditional Charlie, just givinghim a well-deservedretirement while the younger generation takes over. The GHC statue which welcomes studentsand guests to the campus was carved byLouis Benanto, Jr. in 1975. He began witha 15-foot by 8-foot cedar log and used achain saw to create Charlie.PAGE 7
