Removing and installing/replacing both rear brakepads of disc brakeSpecial tools required: 34 1 050 34 1 280 2 285 574 2 365 377Attention! So as not to damage thesurface coating, ifpossible do notmechanically clean theguide surfaces for thebrake pads on the brakecaliper mountingbracket. Instead, cleanwith brake cleanerBMW part number83 19 2 154 780 andapply a thin coating ofbrake pad pasteBMW part number 83 192 158 851 (3 grey) or83 19 2 158 852(100 grey). Spread brake pad pasteonto the markedsurfaces using a brush! Observe guideline forapplying brake padpaste on brake pads andbrake anchor plate! Brake pad wear sensor:After removal it must bereplaced (brake padwear sensor loses itsretention capability inthe break pad).

Retaining pins andexpanding spring: forvehicles older than 48months it isrecommended toreplace the retainingspring!A CBS reset must bedone after every brakepad exchange. With a sanded brake padwear sensor (display inCBS menu): CBS resetpossible in vehicle. With a non-sanded brakepad wear sensor: CBSreset only possible viadiagnosis system.Warning!During repair work on therear brake, it must beensured that the button forthe electromechanicalparking brake cannot bepressed!Necessary preliminary work: Remove wheels. Remove brake pad wearsensor.Removal:

Lift out retaining spring (1).Disconnect plugconnection (1).Detach cable from bracket (2).Remove cover plug (1).Release guide screws.Pull off brake caliper (2).Attention!Tie brake calliper back and donot allow to hang from brakehose.

Install the brake caliper (1) withcable strap 2 413 317.Never leave the brakecaliper (1) hanging on thebrake caliper.Remove brakepads (1).Attention!Mark any worn brake pads.In the event of one-sided brakepad wear, do not change brakepads round.Installation: Check minimum brake discthickness:Position specialtool 34 1 280 at threemeasuring points in area (1)and measure.Compare measuring result andlowest value with setpointvalue.

Attention! If new brake pads aremounted on a brake disc, thefollowing must be observed: Bevel edges in the area(1) slightly (dimension Amust not exceedmaximum 1 mm). These procedures applies forall the following describedbrake systems.Place specialtool 2 285 574 , 2 365 377 onbrake piston.Use reversible ratchet (1) toturn back brake piston up tolimit position.Attention! When pressing piston back, note brake fluid level inexpansion tank.Overflowing brake fluid willdamage the paintwork.Check dust boot for damageand renew if necessary.Clean contact surface (1) ofbrake piston with brake cleanerand apply a thin coating ofbrake pad paste.Attention!Dust boot must not come intocontact with brake pad pasteas this may cause the dustboot to swell.

Clean contact surfaces (1) ofT-head/brake caliper housingwith brake cleaner and apply athin coating of brake padpaste.Clean contact surface (1) ofbrake caliper with brakecleaner and apply a thincoating of brake pad paste. So as not to damage thesurface coating, if possible donot mechanically clean theguide surfaces (1) for thebrake pads on the brakecaliper mounting bracket.Clean guide surfaces (1 and 2)with brake cleaner and apply athin coating of brake padpaste.

So as not to damage thesurface coating, if possible donot mechanically clean theguide surfaces (1 and 2) forthe brake pads on the brakecalliper mounting bracket.Clean guide surfaces (1 and 2)with brake cleaner and apply athin coating of brake padpaste.Apply a thin coating of brakepad paste to T-head of innerbrake pad in area (1) and (2).Apply a thin coating of brakepad paste to T-head of outerbrake pad in area (1) and (2).

If necessary, clean brake pads.Install brake pads (1).Note:Brake pad with retainingsprings (2) must be installedon the piston side. Note:Clean guide screws only; donot grease.Check thread.Replace all guide screwswhich are not in perfectcondition.Mount brake caliper (2).Insert guide bolts and tighten.Tightening torque 34 21 3AZ.Install cover plug (1).Attention!When putting on the brakecaliper, it is absolutelynecessary to make sure thatthe T-head (1) of the outerbrake pad is seated correctlyon the contact surface (2).Above all, ensure theinstallation position of the outerbrake pad to the contactsurface (2) in brake pads thathave worn out partially.

Attach cable to bracket (2).Position plug connection (1)and lock.Install the retaining spring(1)Attention!Ensure the retaining spring isfits securely. Required follow-up work:Installing the brake pad wearsensor.Install wheels at the rear.Note:After completion of the repair: Fully depress brake pedalseveral times so thatbrake pads contact brakediscs. When installing new brakepads at front and rearaxles, the brake fluid levelmust be brought up to the”maximum” mark.Read and comply withnotes on braking in new

brake discs / brake pads.Switch on ignition and, using electrical parkingbrake operating element, open parking brake once, close once and openagain.

brake caliper. Remove brake pads (1).Attention! Mark any worn brake pads. In the event of one-sided brake pad wear, do not change brake pads round. Installation: Check minimum brake disc thickness: Position special tool 34 1 280 at three measuring points in area (1) and measure. Compare measuring result and lowest value with setpoint value.
