Well, it has been too true in the case of one of the pluckiest of Bakerites--GEORGE KUWAMURA!George is still the owner of GEORGE'S LI QUORS, corner of College Walk &Beretania Sts--but that place is slated to go as part of the redevelopment planfor the Aala Triangle! And that's how his woes began. He bought WAIKIKI LI QUORS figuring that hewould still be in the liquor business when his old place i s condemned; whichwas a good move business-wise. But, 10 and behold, he gets held up in hi s WAIKIKI store night. On top uf it, gets locked in his own cold storage box!And whether or not that is the aftermath of his "ordeal", he gets laid up in thehospital for nigh six months, suffering a paralysis of one side ? f his body! Now, he is up and around again--still a hustler, and looking for a BAR to acquire.ANYONE KNOW OF ONE FOR SALE? But old age has taken its toll too!OUR SINCER E APOLOGIES TO YOU, from all Bakerities, GEORGE, for not dOinga thing during your hospitalization. Able Family NightImagine, family -night in a "Gym". This most unusual Able Chapter FamilyNight was held at YBA Gym on Thursday, August 27,1964.The idea of this unusual family night was brought out by Naoji Yamagata duringAble Chapter Picnic at Ken Okamoto's Beach House which was held on Sunday,July 26. Naoji volunteered to be chairman if we are able to rent YBA to have abasketball game between fathers and sons. The idea was seconded Immediatelyby Kazuo Kamemoto and Pres. Alfred Arakaki. This is how the idea of Naojimaterialized.Sinc'e Herbert Yamamoto, executive secretary of our club is a director of YBAthis year, we had no trouble in renting the YBA Gym and swimming pool. Invitations were sent out immediately by our chairman, Naoji, so we can holdthis family night before the school starts for our kids.Swimming was held from 5:30 - 6:30 P.M. It was encouraging to see so many"Teen Agers" participating in swimming. The star swimmers noted immediatelywere Goro Sumida, Stanley Takahashi, Richard Oki "Monzook" Okazaki, LeftyMorioka and Richard Miyashiro. The only near accident happened to "Goro".Goro trying to show us the art of underwater swimming, he banged his head intothe wall of the swimming pool while performing the great feat. Then the "pot luck supper" was served after the swimming. There were chicken, noodles, desert, tako, ogo, ham, lamb stew, currie stew, barbecue meat, andmany other "gochi-so". According to Mrs. Alfred Arakaki, Alfred and hisfamily spent all afternoon squeezing fresh oranges picked from neighbor'stree. No wonder the punch tasted good. During the feast, the person who caughtmy eye was Richard Oki. He brought his outdoor stove to warm up his currystew so we can have a hot meal. After the meal, he began making soup for"Atokuchi".I believe he didn't have any decent supper for the evening sincehe spent most of the supper time running back and forth between the meal tableand his handy stove. The coffee which was made by Mrs. Yamagata and cake.which was donated by Mrs. Kawakami added wonderful touch to the" Atokuchi".These are just few of the people I noticed, but much credit should be given tomany others who added great taste to the spread. After the dinner, basketball game between Fathers and Sons was held. "Nishi"was the hard working referee. The only disappointing thing was that our refereeforgot his whistle. Richard, Goro, Stanley, Alfred, Seie, "Monzook" and Carlpractically played the entire 30 minute game. The only casualty of the eveningwas Richard Miyashiro who received blishters on both of his feet. Thank Godthat there was no heart attack during the game. The high scorer for the fatherswas "Goro'. The most noticeable thing during this game was the sudden growthof our children. Ten years ago these kids were only about 4' 6" in height, andnow some of them range in the height of 5' 8". Goro suggested that the onlysport we can beat our "Teen Agers" is in swimming. I would like to say toGoro that it is better to concede to these kids no matter what game we challengethem. Remember, time marches on, and we are considered over the "hill" asfar as Sports are concerned.

On the other s id e of the co urt, th e re was a game of volley ball between mothersand daughters.Howeve r, the game e nded as mix game. The volley ball gameattracted man y participants, and th e official score keeper was Joanne Kawakami. After the basketball game was over, Seie Oshiro's son and his Trio entertainedus with some fin e "Twi st" musi c . Mrs. Dorothy Kawakami gave us some fineexhibit ion in twist dancing.According to Seie, probably this will be the lasttime this band will play together. The rea so n is that with higher education, theband pla yers will have less time to play music together.Thi s family night was one of the most s uccessful family nights of the Able Chapter.Mu ch credi t should be given to our general chairman Naoji and President, Alfredwho spea rh e ad ed thi s spectacular program. Such program for "Teen Agers"shou ld be enco ura ged more often. YBA extends Club 100 invitation to use itsfacilities with open hand. Mr. Yamaguchi, the YBA coordinator indicated thatClub 100 T ee n Agers are welcome to participate in YBA invitational basket andvo ll eyba ll ga mes.I would like to extend thanks through this Puka Puka Parade to Mr. Mineo Yamagata, executive secretary who gave us the permission to use the gym. ThanksMin eo and staff of YBA for your cooperation to help us in making our familynight a s uccessful one .In concl us ion, 1 would recommend that the Able Chapter should consider suchprogram as this for "teen Age rs" in the future. Basketball game betweenfather and sons should be exclud ed from the future program before someonerecei ves a heart attack during the game . We must dispense with any idea hereafter to chall enge ou r so ns because we will neve r cope with the speed of our sons.by Richard IshimotoSwimming: Children did a ll ri ght.
