STEP UP SUNCOAST 2019 ANNUAL REPORTMissionEmpowers individuals and families to achieve long-term economic stabilitythrough education, support services, and community partnerships.VisionThriving communities with improved quality of life for current and future generations.Core ValuesHonesty. Integrity. Responsibility. Respect.3

Goals of 2019 To take a leadership role in actively advocating for and educating our community aboutthe importance of living wage paying jobs and the economic impact on the community. To actively advocate for, and educate our community about, the value of early learning, early childhood development, and its long-term impact on low-income individuals, families, and communities. To increase education levels and expand job skills to improve employment opportunities. To develop, align, and enhance the resources and financial capacities of Step Up Suncoastto address identified community needs, priorities, and future service demands.Highlights of 2019Rise and Shine Early Learning Expansion into Pride Park: In 2019, the U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services offered grant awards to expand Early Head Start services. Step Up Suncoast wasone of the nine programs in Florida that received the award. The grant has allowed us to expand ourRise and Shine Early Learning program for an additional 80 infants and toddlers and eight pregnantwomen. We used a portion of this grant award to open a site to serve the children of parents enrolledin Manatee County School District’s Teen Aged Parents Program (TAPP) so that the babies are able toattend a high quality infant and toddler center while their mothers and/or fathers continue their HighSchool Education in the same school building. This program is a win-win for the babies, their parents, and our community.Visible Men Academy partnership: In 2019, Step Up Suncoast’s Rise and Shine Early Learningprograms partnered with Visible Men Academy (VMA), a charter school serving boys grades K-5,to offer an all-boys preschool classroom filled with three- and four-year-olds. We felt this was animportant opportunity for the community and both agencies to singularly focus on a classroomenvironment for at-risk, little boys which adds a unique learning experience and another choice forfamilies. The intent is to create an atmosphere that will help develop a lifelong love of learning andschool success, with the sincere hope that our Rise and Shine boys will transition to Visible Men Suns.Increased financial threshold for Family Self-Sufficiency students: In 2019, Step Up Suncoast wasable to increase the qualifying financial threshold for four additional students participating in theFamily Self-Sufficiency program due in part to funding provided by the Manatee Matches GivingCircle at Manatee Community Foundation. This expansion allowed us to reach students who wereworking and making over 125% of the Federal poverty guidelines but under 200%. These four womenare currently enrolled in local nursing school programs and will graduate with a college education andable to provide long-term financial stability for themselves and their families.

STEP UP SUNCOAST 2019 ANNUAL REPORTA message from theDirector of Development, Jill GassIn 2019, Step Up Suncoast saw the power ofphilanthropy at work. The ability to expand ourRise and Shine Early Learning program ontothe Visible Men Academy campus was madepossible because of philanthropy. Philanthropyalso allowed for the expansion of the FamilySelf-Sufficiency program adding students whootherwise would not have qualified for our helpand support. We launched the Every 1 Countscampaign in October based on the belief thatevery child has value, every dollar given tosupport our programs matters, and every teammember working to better the lives of thosethey serve is important. Over the next two yearswe hope to be able to flex our philanthropymuscles and further expand our early childhoodJill Gass, CCAPeducation and family engagement services tocontinue our mission of closing the achievement gap for children throughout theSuncoast.
