During that time, many patients and staff were relocated to Michael Sobell Hospice inorder to keep vital care and services going for those who needed it. Aclinical team of staff including 2 doctors and 11 nurses moved acrossfrom Watford to Northwood and we caught up with some of the nursesbefore they left to speak to them about their time at MSH.All of the nurses commented on how great the care was at MSH andalso how quickly they were made to feel part of the team. According tostaff nurse, Cecilia, “we were all made to feel very welcome. The carehere is brilliant at all levels. There is no real sense of hierarchy and all ofthe team are so ‘hands on’.”The nurses were very impressed with the ‘Good Productive Ward’system which is in practice at MSH. This operates by having all of therequired facilities and supplies right next to the wards making everythingeasily accessible. Cecilia said “everything from drinks and snacks forthe patients, to dressings, linen and even the pharmacy are all close by,freeing up more time for us to spend with the patients and less time tryingto find things. Senior Staff Nurse Bibi said, “This is an excellent conceptwhich we will be proposing for the Peace to adopt in the near future.”Carol Weston, Ward Manager at MSH, said “I think the whole experiencewas very beneficial to both MSH and Peace staff, and we learned a lotfrom each other.” The Peace nurses want to thank all of the staff, sistersand Ian for making them feel so welcome.Last month Margaret Wilcockleft MSH for pastures new. Shejoined us in 2004 initially as DayCare Leader, and then becamethe inpatient unit Manager inJanuary 2008. She was alreadya very experienced nurse andbrought with her a very ‘can do’approach to nursing. She soonbecame a big hit with patients, relatives and volunteers.Margaret was very supportive of the nursing staff and has beeninstrumental in their career development. She also has a great sense ofhumour. We wish her all the best in her new post at St Luke’s Hospice inKenton. We are pleased to announce that Carol Weston has been promotedto be our new Ward Manager. Carol has worked at MSH for many yearsand has risen up the ranks from volunteer! She has worked exceptionallyhard undertaking her nurse training and most recently a degree inpalliative care. She is very committed to MSH, and we wish her all thebest with her new post.Keyfactv1TrusteegivenhonoraryawardAt the December AGM, our trusteeDiana Walker was given the title ofour first Honorary Vice President andpresented with an award for over 36years of dedication and voluntarywork for MSH. Michael Sobell Hospice Matters Spring 2014Michael Sobell Hospice Matters Spring 2014MakingTheMostOf LifeKey2factThis yearwe need toraise 1.4million fromthe localcommunityto supportthe workof MichaelSobellHospiceFollowing on from the National Cancer SurvivorshipInitiative, MSH has been piloting a new community palliativerehabilitation scheme where patients with life limitingillnesses can receive help at home at an earlier stage oftheir illness. The aim of the scheme is to offer patientsspecialist advice and practical help with managing specificsymptoms and their daily activities, and to provide a speedyservice that enables patients to maximise their quality oflife for as long as possible. The service involves a thoroughassessment, either as an out patient or at home, by ourphysiotherapist and/or occupational therapist. They are thenable to plan with you a programme of tailored advice andintervention to help with problems such as reduced mobility, pain, breathlessness and anxiety management. Interventioncould include relaxation sessions, mobility practice, exercise programmes and/or provision of equipment andadaptations, for example, bath seats and rails.During the pilot, patients have been referred directly froma community palliative care team but the team hopes thismay be expanded to other professionals and eventually selfreferrals. Sarah Crickmore, Senior Physiotherapist and rehabteam member said “so far there has been a very positivefeedback from the palliative care team referrers and theyfeel the quick response time has been particularly usefulfor patients. Patients have commented that they have foundthe rehab team’s input to be informative, sensitive, practicaland reassuring. According to John Hayward, a patient ofthe rehab team, “they were absolutely brilliant, they haveorganised lots of little things to make my life easier suchas bannisters for my stairs and support chairs. They havealso helped me with mybreathing so that I canget up the stairs moreeasily and what’s moreeverything was done soquickly.”For more informationon this service contactSarah or Julie on 01923844375.Developing ourVolunteersDid you know that the EducationTeam at Michael Sobell runs regularsessions throughout the yearespecially for volunteers? Michael Sobell Hospice Matters Spring 2014VolunteersMichael Sobell Hospice Matters Spring 2014Every issue we featurevolunteers who givetheir time to MichaelSobell HospiceA very‘tweet’ storyGeorgina Abraham applied to become a volunteer atMSH in 2008 when she was 16 and began volunteeringregularly on a Saturday, offering hospitality andfriendship to our patients and their visitors. WhenGeorgina went off to University she kept in touch with thehospice and visited us whenever she came home. Duringone of her visits, she heard that we wanted to brightenup the aviary in the unit, and knowing that her motherMarie had a keen interest in art, Georgina asked her tohelp with this project. Marie had wanted to support MSHfor some time but had been unable to commit to regularvolunteering so she jumped at the chance to put her skillsto good use.She began the project by designing the artwork oftrees, flowers and butterflies and planning the colourscheme. With the help of her husband Christopher, theytransformed the aviary in just one week into a beautifulhome for the 30 birds that live in it. Marie said “theproject was so rewarding, everyone in the unit was solovely, blowing kisses at us through the aviary windowswhile we were painting.”The aviary means a lot to our hospice, to patients, theirvisitors as well as staff and we are absolutely delightedwith the new look. We would like to extend our thanks tothe Abraham family, who have brightened up the placeand brought a smile to many faces, and also to the teamof volunteers who give up their time each week to feedthe birds and keep the area clean.Blooming marvellousvolunteersOur amazing team of volunteer gardeners havehad a very busy few months.
