QND Retirees Combine for 75 years of Service“Although many changes haveoccurred during my years atQND, its core of Catholicvalues has remained steady.The world has a great need forthe values and atmosphereQND provides for its students.The chapel has been a rock intimes of distress and stress.One of the hardest challengeshas been the grief that comeswhen a student or a teacherdies. It never gets easy, but students and teachers flock to the chapelto pray when word gets out. A community that bands togetherstays strong. I have been blessed to be a part of this school and ama better person for it.”Mrs. Pat Lask began teachingat QND in October of 1977.She had quite the transition atthat time going from helpingin the kindergarten classes atEllington School on a Friday toteaching freshman, sophomore,junior and senior English atQND the following Monday.Mrs. Lask remained an Englishteacher throughout her 41years at QND. She was alsothe yearbook moderator for20 years and later the SADD(Student Against DestructiveDecisions) and English Clubmoderator. Mrs. Lask is knownfor her deep passion forteaching and her rigorous seniorEnglish class that helped preparestudents for their college career.Mr. George McDonnell beganworking at QND in 1987.Throughout his 34 years atQND, Mr. McDonnell has taughtall grade levels of theology.He was also the freshmanand sophomore guidancecounselor for one year and theP.E. instructor for one semester.Mr. McDonnell is known by all atQND as a man of faith and a rolemodel on how to serve others.During his time at QND,Mr. McDonnell was involvedin many student clubs andorganizations and was veryactive in athletics. He heldpositions as the assistant girlsbasketball coach and theassistant boys soccer coachunder Frank Longo, MarkLongo and Greg Reis. He thenstepped away from boys soccerand began as the assistant girlssoccer coach with Mark Longofor many years and finished hiscareer with this team.“They say that time flies whenyou’re having fun, and these past34 years have flown by so fast itwas like a dream. I can’t begin tosay how blessed I’ve been thesepast years, being involved withthe students and their families,the administration, the facultyand staff. It has all been anexperience that I have loved,it will always be a part of me.I will continue to pray foreveryone at QND both past andpresent and continue to support them in the future. Thank you,QND, for showing me the face of God in action. God Bless.”“Being part of the QND family has shown us the importance of putting God first, whilestriving to pass on important values and faith to our children. Wenetworked with many businesses, individuals, families and alumnithroughout the country to support the importance of Catholicsecondary education in Quincy,” said Stuckman.“The success is great,but more importantly, we are very humbled that so many supportersput their faith in us to invest in our school wisely which enables QNDto remain the debt free school that it is.”The QND Fund Drive keeps tuition affordable by paying a portion ofthe school’s operating expenses to close the gap between the costto educate and student tuition. The campaign also provides financialassistance to students. Over the past 44 years, the QND Fund Drivehas raised more than 17 million. The Fund Drive was led byco-chairpersons Bryan Stokes and Lydia (Keck) Miller ’04.2QND Reunion newsHighlights of the 2021 QND Fund Drive: The Foundation received more than 61,000 in new giftsand collected over 70,000 from donors who increasedtheir gift from the previous year. The 2021 Fund Drive saw 66% of all gifts comefrom alumni. The average gift to the 2021 Fund Drive was 439. The success comes from a donor retention rate of 92%year after year.

Alumni SpotlightUniversity where he receivedhis Bachelor of Science inIndustrial Engineering. Hethen attended Southern IllinoisSchool of Medicine and receivedhis M.D., graduating in 2013.He completed a 5-year residencyprogram in General Surgeryat Grand Rapids MedicalEducation Partners.Adam Henke ’03Dr. Adam Henke feels blessedto have a fulfilling career wherehe is able to help people resolvehealth issues. Adam is a partnerin a private practice surgicalgroup in Grand Rapids, Mich.He serves two local hospitalsas a general, trauma andtransplant surgeon. His job entailsdiagnosing and treating a widevariety of surgical problems,with a focus on the abdomen,dialysis vascular access, kidneytransplants and traumatic injuries.He also works with and teachesresidents from the University ofMichigan and Michigan State.Adam and his partners are theonly group in West Michigan thatperform kidney transplants andare proud to serve the patientsthere in need of that care.Adam began his path to adoctorate at St. AmbroseAdam cherishes his time at QNDand the influence the atmosphereand education has had on hislife. “QND has impacted mylife on multiple levels. Mostimportantly, as a student there,I began my relationship withmy wife, Megan,” states Adam.“I fostered friendships with mybest friends, with whom I am stillvery close. The teachers and staffcreated a family-like atmospherein which my Catholic faith couldmature and my education couldflourish. I loved my time at QNDand hope that my own childrenwill be granted an opportunity tobe a part of a community of suchquality as QND.”Adam and his wife Megan(Makenzie) ’03 live in a suburbof Grand Rapids with their twochildren: Genevieve (Evie) and John.QND is excited to be participating in the Illinois State High SchoolClay Target League. The co-ed QND RAIDER TRAP SQUADbegan in the fall of 2021 and will also have a spring season.The league’s priorities are safety, fun and marksmanship.Nearly 50 QND students,along with adult chaperones,volunteered to participatein CATHOLIC HEARTWORKCAMP July 11-16,2021, in Kansas City, Mo.Illinois State ScholarsQuincy Notre Dame had six students from the Class of 2021 (namedin the spring of ’21) and ten students from the Class of 2022(named in the fall of ’21) recognized as Illinois State Scholars. Thisaward is given by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission tothose that rank in the top 10 percent of high school seniors in thestate. Alumni SpotlightsKay (Kaltenbach)Lobo ’80Kay Lobo never had one boringday in her 23 years with AbbottLaboratories. Kay began workingat Abbott Laboratories in 1994and specialized in internationalmarket research. She helpeddevelop new products by talkingto health care providers andpatients around the world abouttheir needs and experiences.Working for such a largediverse company allowed her tochange jobs several times overthe years without ever leavingthe company. She worked inpharmaceutical, nutrition anddiagnostic business. Her worktook her to over 25 countriesand she has maintainedrelationships with friends allover the world.Kay retired from AbbottLaboratories in 2017, butcontinues to keep busy as avolunteer board member andgrants chair for Caring Women’sConnection. This philanthropicorganization works with smalllocal businesses to raise moneyand provide grants to charitiesthat support needy women andchildren in Lake County, Ill.,such as homeless shelters andprograms for disabled childrenand domestic abuse victims.“The education I received at QNDprepared me well for college,which in turn, prepared me wellfor my career. Being able to writeand communicate was somethingI took for granted until I learnedthat many people in the workplacedo not have these skills,”states Kay. “I also learned thevalue of service and caringfor others – which directly ledme to the volunteer work I’mdoing now.”“On a lighter note, I alsolearned to play golf at QND,although Coach Citro wouldlikely have preferred that I hadlearned BEFORE joining theteam. Personally, I made greatlifelong friends at QND. Evenliving in the Chicago area, I stillmeet up with a small group ofthem several times a year – andlook forward to larger meet-upsin the near future!”Read more about Kay atQuincyNotreDame.org.Remembering Rich ReisThe QND family lost the legendary, Rich Reis, on July 31, 2021.Rich was the head of maintenance at QND from 1980 until hisretirement in 2018. After his retirement, he continued to help QND invarious ways including maintaining and driving the buses. Rich wasinducted into the QND Hall of Fame in 2020 for his meritorious service.Rich was instrumental in day-to-day repairs, new large scaleconstruction projects, could trouble shoot any situation and wasalways willing to help everyone he could. His sense of humor wasinfectious and lit up the halls of QND for nearly 40 years. He waslike a father to me and he istruly missed since his passing inrecent months. At QND, CoachPhillip Conover took over whereCoach Hess left off. CoachConover was an excellent rolemodel for me, which kept meon the right path. Our abilityto help the high school and assist our studentsand families would not be possible without thegenerosity of our benefactors.The QND Fund Drive had a tremendous banner year raising 571,000 on a goal of 447,500. This is the largest amount raisedin the 44-year history of the Fund Drive. The 2021 Mega Rafflesold all 4,000 tickets in three weeks and provided 100,000 to theQND and QCES (Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools) Foundations.The raffle additionally, through the 10 Ticket Give-Back program,awarded a total of 40,000 amongst Quincy’s five Catholic schools.We have seen tremendous growth in our scholarship portfoliothat is valued over 7.3M, up from 1.8M just 10 short years ago.We currently provide more tuition assistance than ever before toour students at more than 300,000 annually. The Foundationsupports the school in a variety of ways for the benefit of ourstudents. Richard and Elizabeth Cox ScholarshipRichard and Elizabeth Cox’s childrendecided to establish a scholarship at QND intheir late parents’ honor after their motherpassed away in 2005 as a way to preservewhat was best about them. Richard andElizabeth, both 1942 graduates, had a deepheartfelt commitment to Catholic educationand made many sacrifices to send six oftheir seven children through 13 years ofCatholic education in Quincy. Their childreninclude Mary Beth Paulek ’66, Anna LeeFenger ’69, Maureen Makarewicz ’72,Janet Scoggan-Thomas ’74, James ’77,Thomas ’79 and the late Richard (Dickie).The Cox family is grateful that their parentsmade Catholic education a priority intheir lives and allowed them to attend aschool rich in faith, tradition and qualityeducation.
