Graduate programs21Spark“Digital technology is making its wayinto every aspect of the hospitalityindustry: hotel operations, guest services, communications, revenue management, distribution, CRM and marketing. Thisnecessitates the emergence of a new typeof digital transformation leaders andmanagers, who understand the businessapplications of technology.”Future-proofing your hospitalitymanagement educationHospitality was, is, and always will be fundamentally a‘people’ business with human-to-human interaction at itsheart. That’s why we help our students develop soft skillsand intercultural fluency alongside their academic andbusiness learning.Max Starkov, Hospitality & Online TravelTech Consultant & StrategistToday, though, innovation is sweeping through hospitalityat an unprecedented pace. We are witnessing arapid evolution of our industry brought about by newtechnologies and digital transformation. With change on this scale comes opportunities toevolve the way hospitality experiences are marketedand delivered. How can we ensure - through our BBAcurriculum - that our students graduate ready to graspthese opportunities?Spark sectorsOur hospitality innovationcurriculum is focused on these keytechnologies:The answer is a global initiative we call Spark. AI and face recognitionWhat is Spark?Spark is a physical innovation space on campus,an academic philosophy, and a means to incubatedisruptive startups. Our goal with Spark is to expose our students to thelatest technologies and innovative ideas which aredriving next-generation hospitality. Through Spark,we let the industry’s future leaders explore thepotential of innovation to:Spark for learningWith our industry and technology partners, wecreate innovation-focused academic projects thatare part of the curriculum for every program weteach (see over page for examples).RoboticsWebApp/ecommerceAR/VR/XRThese academic assignments allow our studentsto prepare for the future by working with earlyadopters of technological innovations that sit onthe cusp of the mainstream. They are real-worldprojects with real-world potential.Internet of things (IoT)Blockchain- Enhance the human experience;- Meet ever-evolving customer needs;- Drive organizational efficiency;- Increase revenues;- And above all to keep their future employer –or their own business – one step ahead of thecompetition.Spark for businessThrough Spark, we are also investing directly in thefuture of hospitality, by supporting disruptive ideasand startups as they make their journeys to market. Our incubation and pre-incubation serviceshave already signed up dozens of high potentialstartups. Graduate programsSparkHow Spark academic projects ignite ourstudents’ learningAt the heart of our Spark philosophy is to Ignite ourstudents’ intellectual curiosity and critical thinking,as they evaluate the potential for innovative ideasand technologies to deliver exceptional customerexperiences.Through Spark, we bring together technologycompanies, industry partners, innovation specialistsand our own expert faculty. This creates opportunitiesfor students to work on real-life business consultancyand academic projects, where they can assess - andenhance - innovative solutions for hospitality andbeyond. On this page we feature some examples of projectsour students have successfully undertaken.Student insights to make VR trainingmore effectiveVirtual Reality (VR) is a technology which hasfascinating potential for hospitality-related training. For instance, how do you train hotel reception staffto deal with inebriated customers in as realistica way as possible? By placing them in a virtualenvironment, this tricky scenario can be played outwithout a drop of alcohol involved! The technology is still young, however, and thereis much scope for development. Through aSpark academic project, our Bachelor studentshave researched the cultural differences whencustomers check-in at hotels in different countries. This research will be used to update the VR trainingsolutions for customer facing staff.Putting environmental innovations to the testFor hotels, laundering guest towels involvessignificant consumption of water and electricity. So,from a sustainability perspective there’s logic toreplacing the traditional towel with an all-over bodydryer that uses a stream of air generated by aneconomical electrical motor. But can such an innovation work in practice?Would guests accept it instead of their morefamiliar towels? A Spark partner is at the forefrontof developing body drying devices and is nowexploring the potential for the technology to bedeployed in hospitality settings.Working with Les Roches students has allowed ourpartner to gain insights from a hotel operationsperspective, as well as getting individual reactionsfrom an academic group representing a hugevariety of different cultures and backgrounds.Meanwhile, a separate student group is looking indepth at the data to assess whether switching tobody dryers makes financial sense for a hotel.22
